The United States believes that women's rights are an important human concern given that women make up half the global population and over 50% of the U.S. population. Many Muslim-majority countries do not provide equal rights and treatment to women under the law. The U.S. acknowledges UN legal frameworks aimed at protecting women's rights, and believes they should be signed, ratified, and implemented as national policy in all countries, especially those that are predominantly Muslim. The U.S. is working with UN bodies through programs like USAID to address issues like cultural differences that hinder women's rights in Islamic countries and to offer cooperation to tackle this issue.
