B Quickly read the text below. Which photo from A is being described?
Read the description again more slowly. There are ten mistakes in the text. Find and correct them.

In this photo, I can see a teenager boy. I should think he’s around eighteen years old. He’s got

spiky, short hair and he’s dressed by a dark T-shirt and jeans with a belt. He also wears a chain, but

it doesn’t look as he’s got any other jewellery on. Judge by his facial expression and his posture,

I say that he’s a bit grumpy. He’s obvious not very happy about something. He’s standing outside

somewhere – I reckon perhaps the picture was took in the street because there is a wall in the behind.

C Look at the corrected text again. Highlight or underline any expressions used for making guesses or deductions.
Which other phrases can you add to these?

D Work in pairs. Take turns to describe one of the pictures from A. Make sure you use a good range of language to guess
and deduce. Give reasons to support your opinions.
Listen carefully to your partner and when he/she has finished, give some feedback on how well you think the task
was completed.

Aims  To review and practise language for guessing and

deducing. To give students practice in describing a photo.
Time  10 minutes
Materials  1 handout for each student
• Give each student a handout and tell them to complete task
A in pairs. Get some feedback from the class, ensuring they
can give reasons for their choices.
• Tell students to quickly skim the text in B to identify which
teenager is being described (picture 2).
• Give students time to find and correct the errors in the text.
Check answers as a class.
