Subject Math

Grade Kindergarten
Level

Learning K.7 The student will recognize the attributes of a penny, nickel, dime, and
Objective quarter and identify the number of pennies equivalent to a nickel, a dime,
and a quarter.
Pedagogy Planning

In this interactive white board activity, the children will touch the board to practice
counting coins and learn about the different equivalences that coin money equates to.

Pedagogy

Activity The lesson will begin by grouping students into groups of two or three
around the room but keeping them in view of the white board so that
they may pay attention and participate in the lesson. I will then begin
this lesson in math/counting coin money by passing out sets of real
coins so that students can get a feel for the real qualities of coin money.
Each group will also receive 3 worksheets with a different part of the
lesson on each of the sides, which I will then ask them to put all group
member’s names on the top of both sheets. We will spend about 10
minutes in our groups inspecting and discussing our coins. I will then
lead a brief discussion amongst the students about their findings and
what they already know about coins. We will then turn to the
interactive white board to continue our lesson in money using coins.
We will be using a premade ClassFlow flipchart assignment made by
Kristy Taxson called “Kindergarten Money”.
 The first activity in this lesson is to watch a video with a song about
money on slide 3. On the following slides, I will demonstrate the
activity first to allow students to view how it is done.
o As a class, students will take turns in their groups coming to the
white board to practice moving coins around on slides 4-5 into
the correct space on the board to equal their value and their
correct name. While the students are taking turns at the white
board the rest of the class will remain in their groups practicing
their knowledge together with a worksheet and real coins.
o The next 4 slides (6-9) will have the students practicing penny
math and the students will again take turns practicing. Students
will work within their groups counting pennies to equal a nickel,
dime, and quarter using another worksheet and each other’s
knowledge.
o Slides 10-12 will have students practicing nickels and dimes on
the white board, while they also practice in groups. How many
nickels in a dime and how many of both in a quarter?
o Slides 13-15 on the white board will have students counting
money and playing a money memory game.
 Students will continue counting money in their groups to practice their
knowledge of coin money math with an additional worksheet to mimic
the white board lesson to further the lesson’s impact. I will give
permission to students to collaborate on all slides and worksheets for
added group learning.
