 THE ECCLESSIARCHY: A MOST
GLORIOUS AND PIOUS HISTORY
0. Overview
The ECCLESIARCHY is the greatest
pillar of the Imperium of Mankind; the ships of
the Navy might connect the worlds, the
Navigators and Astropaths might keep those
worlds in contact, and the Astra Militarum
might shield those worlds from the Darkness
with their might, but it is the Ecclesiarchy that
unites them - Faith in the God-Emperor is what
keeps the thousands of realms standing
together!
But it was not always so! For ten
thousand years, the Imperium has endured, but
in the days of its birth and the dark days of the
Great Betrayal that followed, Mankind was
without the guidance and embrace of His
Church, and in those tumultuous times all that
He-On-Terra had worked for before His
accession was almost destroyed. So it was
proven that the power of faith was needed to
hold together the fledgling Empire of
Humanity, and so began its millenia-long
history.
I. The Horus Heresy
Ten thousand years ago, the armies of
the Imperium advanced throughout the stars.
As they advanced, they reunited the scattered
survivors of Humanity and purged world after
world of the taint of the xenos, and the
Imperium grew with each passing hour. In
those heady days, the Emperor sat not upon
His Golden Throne and marched at the head of
His armies, turning back the darkness of the
Old Night with His Will and His Sword. As
mortals like us followed in His wake, a few
began to see the truth of His nature - a truth
even He was not yet ready to announce - that
He was the one true God of Mankind.
Armed with this knowledge, the
faithful began to spread the Word, seeking
only to bring joy and harmony to those looking
to make sense now of a universe that would
soon be His to rule as a paradise. However, the
Betrayal that was to come was already starting
to sour the air, and so false demagogues
denounced His divinity and suppressed His
followers, hoping to consign their faith and the
hope it brought to history, and thus ease their
rise to power.
And so began the dark days of the
Horus Heresy; when the Emperor returned to
Terra to work for the betterment of all the
Imperium, fully half of His Sons and their
Legions of Adeptus Astartes rebelled against
Him. The Fallen Sons and their armies ravaged
the Imperium and finally came to lay siege to
Holy Terra itself. The Emperor would not bow
to these faithless, however, and in the
company of two of His loyal Sons and an army
of golden warriors, He took the fight to the
Arch-Traitor Horus.
The final battle was bloody and
fierce, and claimed the life of Saint
Sanguinius, the Angel-Child of the Emperor,
but eventually He fought His way to Horus'
command room. There, the Emperor fought
His dark Son, setting His golden sword and
divine psychic gifts against the Warp-strength
and madness of Horus, destroying him and
casting the Traitor's soul asunder into oblivion.
However, it cost Him dearly to do so, for
Horus had dealt Him a mortal blow. So it was
that even as the pitiful remnants of Horus'
armies fled from Sol's light, pursued by His
warriors, the Emperor was carried back to the
Imperial Palace and placed, near death, on the
Golden Throne.
But even now, seemingly in death, the
Emperor was not defeated! Atop His mighty
Throne, the Emperor needed not to think of
any mortal concern, and so was able to turn
His entire might higher - in that moment, He
became what the faithful had once foreseen; he
ascended as the God-Emperor of Mankind, and
from his Golden Throne He turned His might
and His gaze out across the stars that He might
guard His people!
II. The Temple of the Saviour Emperor
Even with its God now in place,
Humanity seemed weak; though now defeated,
the armies of the Arch-Traitor had decimated
the Imperium and the surviving worlds of Man
were weak and divided. Fortunately, just as all
seemed lost, a band of the faithful emerged
that had survived the Great Betrayal - the
Temple of the Saviour Emperor. They had
endured on Terra itself under the leadership of
Fatidicus, and now marched out to spread
word of His ascension.
The truth of His Word that the
Temple spread was undeniable, and so world
after world came to know that the Emperor, so
long denied, had always been divine and was
now ready to accept the worship of His
peoples. The Temple seemed most swiftly to
attract those in the Guard and the Navy, for
they knew in their souls that they would be
called ever to distant worlds, where His Word
would be needed.
Soon, almost two-thirds of the
Imperium knew the truth of His divinity, and
by the early years of the 32nd Millennium, the
Temple was large enough to be formally
acknowledged by the High Lords. Renamed
the Adeptus Ministorium, the Temple of the
Saviour Emperor was made the official state
religion of the Imperium, the better to protect
it from weakness and shelter it from the
Darkness.
Within another two hundred years,
the noble Ecclesiarch Veneris II had become
the first head of His Church to sit on the
Council as a High Lord, and soon the position
was permanent - wisdom won out and those
that spoke His teachings were given an eternal
role in guiding His flock.
III. The Cataclysm of Souls
The dark days of the Imperium were,
lamentably, not yet over, for still dark forces
lurked - ever hungry for their own power.
In the 35th Millennium, the hated Ur-
Council of Nova Terra declared themselves the
true rulers of Humanity and rejected Terra and
its High Lords, and in so doing, rejected Him
on His Throne. For nine hundred years, the
Imperium was split asunder and Twin Empires
jostled to rule - the Ecclesiarchy did all it
could to unite Humanity in faith, but led by
names as reviled as Obidiah Hrakon and that
Robed Rogue, the 'Saviour of Praxus', the Ur-
Council could heed not their prayers or shouts
of fraternity.
Eventually the Church had no other
choice left open unto them; in the Cataclysm
of Souls of 975.M35, the dream of a unified
crusader state was dashed and the faithful fell
upon Nova Terra with a righteous fury. Their
heresy and disunity were crushed and the stars
purged of their false rule.
IV. The Age of Apostasy
Despite its glorious origins, its role as
the uniting force of the Imperium, and the
crucial role that it plays in His work, the great
Ecclesiarchy has not always been treated with
respect by those who sought only their own
gain. Perhaps the most infamous of these
abuses of Our Hallowed Church was the
disaster that would later be known as the Age
of Apostasy.
Between the 33rd and 35th
Millennium, jealous eyes within the Adeptus
Mechanicus and a handful of Space Marine
Chapters joined together with impious factions
within the Administratum to try and wrest the
Ministorium's power away from it. Despite the
efforts of the pious to deny them, eventually
they managed to erode the power of the
Ecclesiarchy until, in 200.M35 the Ecclesiarch
Benedin IV was forced to flee Terra.
Unable to survive on the Throneworld
under such an assault, the Adeptus Ministorum
followed its Ecclesiarch to Ophelia VII - the
third world of the Imperium and long a great
seat of pious Cardinals. Now free of the
persecutions of its enemies within the High
Lords, the Ecclesiarchy set about restoring its
rights and powers, and so began an age in
which great palaces and temples were built
across the Imperium, countless heretic sects
were exterminated and armies of the newly
formed Frateris Templar fought crusades
beside the soldiers of the Imperial Guard.
After almost three centuries, the great
Ecclesiarch Greigor XI decided that it was
time for the Ecclesiarchy to return to Terra - he
knew that the Ministorium was now again
strong enough to resist those who were still
jealous of its powers, and believed that the
Church belonged by the Emperor's side. He
returned to the adoration of His faithful, for
they knew His preachers had returned to the
Homeworld, and spent years emptying the
coffers of the Ecclesiarchy rebuilding the
Imperial Palace that the faithless other High
Lords had allowed to decay in the
Ministorium's absence.
However, Greigor was ever quick to
believe that those around him were as good
and pious as they should be and did not
suspect the incredible patience of the jealous.
The Administratum would bide its time for
several centuries before it was ready to strike
again against the Church, but when it did it too
would be damaged as it was dominated by the
detestable Goge Vandire.
A greedy and violent man, Vandire
rose quickly through the ranks of the
Administratum and, before they could realise
the true taint within him, he had seized total
control as the 361st High Lord of the
Administratum. Soon after he broke into the
halls of the Ministorium and executed
Ecclesiarch Paulis III before claiming
command of the Church himself, impious as he
was. When disaster befell the Cardinals who
attempted to flee his wrath, he replaced them
with 'Cardinals' who would kneel before him
before the Emperor. High Lord Vandire -
Emperor condemn him - now commanded the
two greatest arms of the Imperium.
V. The Reign of Blood
Once in possession of this power, the
impious Vandire soon revealed that his greed
was second to his madness - his reign became
known as the Reign of Blood; the darkest
chapter of the Age of Apostasy. Under his
instruction were the faithful tortured that he
might laugh; the Hive World of Calana VII
was bombed without reason and rendered a
ruin that is still less productive than it was; all
girls under the age of twelve on Boras Minor
were enslaved on his whim; the ice caps of
Jhanna were melted, causing four million to
drown. For seventy years did he so rule, the
Imperial Palace forgotten and collapsing into
rot around him even as he ordered statues to
his own glory built on distant worlds.
And yet on one distant world was
there also a glimmer of hope for the Church
and the Imperium both. On Dimmamar there
had been a change; Dimmimar had denounced
Goge Vandire as a traitor to all of Humanity,
and had rallied to a new Prophet; Sebastian
Thor.
A humble preacher, Thor belonged to
an ancient sect known as the Confederacy of
Light, and spoke out against Vandire's purges,
his ego and his tithes that starved the hungry
and fed his mad appetites. Even whilst the
High Lords debated on Thor's fate, his sermons
spread throughout the Segmentum Obscurus
and eighty planets rose up to support Thor's
Confederacy of Light.
Finally Vandire acted, and dispatched
his entire Frateris Templar to destroy the
rebels. However, the God-Emperor would not
allow the destruction of His favoured preacher,
and so the Templar fleet was destroyed by a
great Warp Storm - a divine intervention still
known to this day as the Storm of the
Emperor's Wrath.
Now free of the threat, and aided by
visions from the Emperor, Thor led his armies
of the faithful from world to world; the entire
Segmentum deposed the false faithful and
began the march towards Terra.
As Thor advanced, the armies of
Vandire's enemies began to appear closer to
Terra. Unable to stomach his madness any
longer, the Adeptus Astartes and the Adeptus
Mechanicus turned against Vandire, and Terra
soon came under siege as four Chapters of the
Angels of Death and the legions of the
Machine Cult marched to end the Mad High
Lord.
With so many enemies beyond his
gate, Vandire never expected his destruction to
come from the divine, and yet as the armies of
Skitarii and Space Marines advanced across
Terra, the sacred guardians of the Emperor
slipped unseen through the Palace and brought
Alicia Dominica - commander of the High
Lord's devout bodyguard - before the Bringer
of Light Himself. What happened within His
throne room will never be known by those as
lowly as we, but when she emerged, Alicia
Dominica knew that Vandire had corrupted the
Imperium, and would doom it to destruction if
not stopped.
Even as fighting continued to rage
above, Dominica strode up to Vandire and
pronounced her holy judgement before
beheading him and ending his twisted reign.
VI. The Aftermath and the Reforms
Following the death of curs'd Vandire
and the end of his Reign of Blood, the pious
could once again work towards the betterment
of His Imperium. Sebastain Thor, whose
impassioned preaching and action had brought
about the destruction of Vandire, was made
Ecclesiarch to rapturous cheers. Under his rule,
the Ecclesiarchy was reformed to ensure that
none could ever corrupt its holy message as
Vandire had.
Sweeping reforms were made to the
size of the Holy Synod, and the Synod
Ministra was established on Ophelia VII in
order to ensure the Holy Synod acted for the
faithful and not for itself. However, perhaps
his most famous reform was the Decree
Passive; the Decree disbanded the Frateris
Templar armies that had become so feared as
Vandire's personal Astra Militarum, and
further forbade the Ecclesiarchy from
maintaining 'men under arms'. Finally, this
blessed Decree reformed Alicia Dominica and
her bodyguards into the Sisters of Battle; the
defenders of the Ministorium who would also
act as a force to stop heretics and traitors from
abusing it from within.
KEY SECTS OF THE IMPERIAL FAITH
i. The Holy Synod
The Holy Synod is the ruling body of the
Ecclesiarchy. Based on Terra, it is (in theory)
comprised of the Cardinals of every diocese in
the Imperium. It is the Holy Synod that holds
the great Ecclesiastical Conclaves and
determines the religious policy of the
Imperium.
ii. The Synod Ministra
Founded on Ophelia VII as part of Sebastian
Thor's glorious reforms, the Synod Ministra is
made up of the Cardinals Ministra and it
relays, disseminates and evaluates the rulings
of the Holy Synod. So distant from Terra, it
acts as a check against the likes of Vandire by
ensuring that no one individual can ever amass
that level of control over the Ecclesiarchy.
iii. The Creed Temporal
The Creed Temporal is the body of the
Ecclesiarchy burdened with responsibility for
the secular duties of the Church. They are the
financial and logistical arm of His Church;
they collect tithes, organise pilgrimages and
ensure the building and upkeep of temples and
Ministorium buildings.
iv. The Missionarius Galaxia
The Emperor's Missionaries, the Misionaria
Galaxia is tasked with spreading His Word to
the furthest corners of the galaxy. It falls to
them to contact native cultures and introduce
them to a version of the Imperial Creed that
they can accept, as well as pruning distasteful
rites wherever possible.
v. The Schola Progenium
Run by Missionaries of the Ecclesiarchy, the
Schola Progenium are homes and academies
for the orphans of Imperial servants who have
given their lives for the Emperor. Under the
attention of priests and Drill-Abbots - former
soldiers given clerical rank and tasked with
training the orphans - they grow into devout
servants of the Emperor. It is from the Schola
Progenium that the Scion Tempestus, Adeptus
Arbites, Adepta Sororitas and Commissars - as
well as many Naval Officers and even
occasionally Imperial Assassins - are drawn.
vi. Crusader Households
The Crusaders are the devout warrior-
bodyguards of the Imperium; unflagging in
their devotion and merciless in their
application to their martial calling, Crusaders
are often found making up the elite formations
that defend even such personages as the
Cardinals Palatine. Those trained by a
Crusader House will emerge selfless,
dauntless and master of both shield and
whatever murderous tool their Household has
made its emblem.
vii. Ranks and Offices
Within there are a great many ranks and
positions that allow the blessed Ecclesiarchy to
function. A selection are presented here:
 Ecclesiarch: The head of the
Ecclesiarchy and a permanent
member of the High Lords of Terra
 Cardinals Palatine: Five Cardinals
without a diocese, they serve as
assistants to the Ecclessiarch
 Cardinals Terran: Cardinals whose
diocese are on Terra
  Cardinals Ministra: Cardinals who
have their diocese within the Ophelia
VII region
 Cardinals Astra: Cardinals whose
diocese are elsewhere in the
Imperium
 Emperor's Chaplain: A Cardinal
entrusted with gathering the Tears of
the Emperor
 Deacon: Priests entrusted with
running the Creed Temporal
 Pontifex: A religious leader; a
Pontifex Mundi might be in charge of
the faith of a planet, a Pontifex Urba
is responsible for the faith of a city,
etc
 Confessors and Preachers: The bulk
of the clergy, tasked with instilling
zeal into the population
 Cenobite: Monks, often dressed in
shrouds and robes
 Chapel-Master: Whilst Preachers tend
to the faithful, Chapel-Masters are
tasked with tending to the places of
worship
 Relic-Keeper: A specialist who bears
knowledge of how to preserve and
tend to a relic or relics
viii. Ayanati
A priesthood found within the Sabbat Worlds,
the Ayanati do venerate the Emperor, but turn
most of their devotion towards Saint Sabbat.
They are often known to travel the pilgrimage
routes of the Sabbat Worlds.
ix. Black Order
Hailing from the Shrine World of Maccabeus
Quintus, the Black Priests of Maccabeus are a
militant Order of exorcists noted for their high
rates of insanity and early death. Despite this,
they are undoubtedly effective, although their
rites are considered radical and dangerous by
many.
x. Creeping Shadow
The Creeping Shadow are a fanatical sect who
believe that Mankind will prosper if forced to
face and overcome fear. In particular they
decry the official Imperial policy of blessed
ignorance for most citizens, and often resort to
sabotage, mass poisoning, kidnap and
terrorism. They are, however, devout Imperials
and can be used to help the faithful.
xi. Cult of the Pure Form
A cult originally from the Malfian Sub-Sector,
the Cult of the Pure Form believe that a doom
is coming that will destroy all humans and
leave only the bionically 'afflicted' servants of
the Mechanicum behind. Its members reject
bionic replacements, preferring cruder
prosthetics or cheap vat-grown tissues in their
place, and are often antagonistic if not openly
hostile to Tech-Cultists.
xii. Death Cults
Death Cults are a broad category of extreme
martial sects who venerate the Emperor
through the art of killing. Just as the Emperor
sacrificed Himself for Humanity, so the
devotees of a Death Cult offer the lives of His
enemies as sacrifices to Him. Most Death
Cults venerate skill with a blade or blades
above all over forms of death, and many
include cannibalistic or haemovoric rites as
part of their worship. A number of Death Cults
are actively heretical, and so care must be
taken when attempting to contact a Death
Cultist.
xiii. Drusians
The first Calixian cult to be officially
acknowledged by the Ministorium, the
Drusians follow the example of Saint Drusus.
The adherents value bravery and sacrifice, and
thus failure to fight the enemies of the
Imperium is the most unforgivable sin. It is a
common cult-fraternity amongst martial
groups such as Guard regiments.
xiv. Gourdians
The Gourdians believe that they possess the
chalice from which the Emperor Himself drank
the night before He fought Horus. From their
base on Terra they have spread across all of
the Imperium in their hunt for relics of the
Emperor, the Primarch and the Saints.
xv. Hallowed Unities
A sect found mostly within the Kharyn Sub-
Sector and the remote Artimann Expanse, the
Hallowed Unities believe that the current
modulation of Imperial society is counter to
the Emperor's intentions; they believe that
class and creed should be eradicated, worlds of
origin should be ignored and that the various
bodies of the Imperium should be unified.
Occasionally this belief appears to extend all
the way to the merging of the Imperial and
Martian Empires. As their beliefs defy the
Decree Passive - amongst other things - they
are under observation by local elements, but
most of their faith appears to be expressed
through charitable work and community
projects.
xvi. Martyrs of Thor
A brief-lived cult founded on San Sebastian in
early M38, the Martyrs of Thor believed that
in death and sacrifice alone could humanity be
accepted by the Emperor, and that the more
unbelievers that could be brought to Him in the
fires of sacrifice, the more pleasing it would be
to Him. Within a few years the cult leaders and
their most inspired followers wiped themselves
out in a series of suicide bombings, leading to
the death of the cult.
xvii. Mendicantine Fraters
The Mendicantine Fraters are a nomadic order
of priests who travel the worlds of the
Imperium according to their own path and
rhythm, spreading the Word. They are believed
to have been founded by Thor himself, and so
enjoy not only protection from persecution but
often the support of the population.
xviii. Red Redemption
The Cult of the Redemption is a fanatical sect
that was founded on Necromunda. Its priests
preach that in order to save Humanity from its
coming doom, it must be purged of sin. In
addition to condemning and actively hunting
mutants and psykers, the militant cult also
seeks out all heretics and 'enemies of the
Redemption'. Its members are expected to
refrain from alcohol and narcotics and pray
and self-flagellate daily. They find surprising
levels of support in a great many Midhive and
Underhive regions.
xix. Sisters of the Void
An al-female cult, the priests of the Sisters of
the Void can be found aboard ships plying the
stars between Imperial worlds. They are non-
combative nurses who do all they can to aid
those travelling the void, and almost no captain
or merchant will refuse a Sister of the Void a
place aboard their ship.
xx. Solar Cults
Solar cults are a broad classification of sects
found on a number of different worlds. Also
known as Helio Cults, some venerate the local
star as a metaphor for the Emperor, whilst
others seek to venerate Sol itself as Humanity's
birth star. The latter are often militant sects
and competent astronomers who can find Sol
in alien skies in order to direct their prayers
towards it and Terra.
xxi. Thorian Sects
A number of sects and cults within the
Imperium believe in resurrectionism; the belief
that the spirit of the Emperor can be reborn
into a being known as a Divine Avatar. Many
believe that Thor, with his divinely inspiring
rhetoric and clarity of purpose, was a Divine
Avatar, and some even believe that other
Divine Avatars can and will exist when they
are needed. These sects are often quashed or
monitored because of the risk of a schism.
xxii. Vitrian Covenant
A militant anti-Ork cult from the Calixis
Sector, the Vitrian Covenant honours the
promise of Confessor Vitrian, who pledged to
slaughter every Ork in the Sector in exchange
for victory over them at Spire City. After the
victory the cult was founded, and now spreads
word of the miracle, fights Orks wherever they
can, and move through Imperial society to
raise support and funds for projects that will
help to defeat the Orks.
xxiii. Church of St. Talon
A xenos-tainted heretical sect founded in the
Artimann Expanse, it had spread to at least
three other worlds before being exposed and
destroyed. Masquerading as a charitable sect
honouring the Rhorschian Saint Talon, the sect
was in truth a Cult of mutated xenos
worshippers. As a result, lamentably, anyone
praying to St. Talon must now be investigated.
xxiv. Legannon Sects
A minor sect founded on Nova Arras in M37,
the teachings of the Legannon Disciples differ
from the main teachings of the Ministorium
only in regards to the timing for the celebration
of the Feast of the Emperor's Ascension, the
level of support local Deacons are allowed to
provide to Frateris Militia groups, and the
correct number of verses of the Lumos
Imperator for a funeral. However, it was
declared heretical due to its connection to the
Legannon Heresy.
xxiv. Temple Tendency
An upsettingly common heretical sect, the
Temple Tendency is descended from the
teachings of the corrupt cardinals that had
supported Vandire. They believe themselves to
be the remnants of the Temple of the Saviour
Emperor, and see themselves as the true
Church of the Imperium - to them the
Confederacy of Light and Sebastian Thor's
reforms are dooming Mankind and must be
purged to save the species. There are
indications that this sect is widespread, but
they hide like cowards because they know they
cannot stand against the rightful position and
zeal of the Ministorium.
xxv. Zabatons
The Zabaton are the battle priests of the
Lethean; it is their duty to inspire the soldiers
under their care with the words of the Lethean
Revelation. They are frequently armed and
armoured to almost the same standard as the
soldiers they fight alongside, complete with
the razorwire crowns and lapels common
amongst the Lethean. Theirs is a bleak
interpretation of the Imperial Creed, where
pain and sin are considered crucial for the
continuation and freedom of the soul.

xxvi. The Church of the Red Athenæum

A sect based in the depths of the cities of Holy
Terra, the Church of the Red Athenæum
worships the holy wounds and suffering of the
God-Emperor, ritually maiming and scarring
themselves in the hope that it will allow Him
to rise from the Golden Throne. The Church
has many specialist ranks within it for so small
a sect, including the militant Order of the Red
Hour, who patch up their mutilations with
bionics in order to defend the faithful.
THE ADEPTA SORORITAS: THE
SISTERS OF BATTLE
Praise be to them, those brave women
of the Adepta Sororitas! An all-female
organisation within the Ecclesiarchy, the
Adepta Sororitas are drawn from the most
pious daughters within the Imperium's Schola
Progenium. The most iconic element of this
organisation are the militant Sisters of Battle;
crusaders tasked with rooting out heresy and
corruption throughout the Imperium.
1. History
Founded in the 36th Millennium on
the Agri-World of San Leor as the Daughters
of the Emperor, the Order was devoted to the
martial worship of the Saviour of Mankind,
however after it came to the attention of the
High Lord Goge Vandire, they were misled
and made his private bodyguards. In his
arrogance, Vandire renamed them the Brides
of the Emperor.
Throughout his Reign of Blood the
Brides of the Emperor were Vandire's most
feared enforcers, for they believed that they
were serving a devout representative of the
Emperor. However, at the height of the war to
bring Vandire to justice, Alicia Dominica -
commander of the Brides of the Emperor - and
a handful of her closest warrior-companions
were shown into the Emperor's throne room
itself. When they emerged, they had been
awakened to Vandire's madness and, renaming
themselves Daughters of the Emperor once
more, executed the mad High Lord.
Following the Reign of Blood, the
Daughters were noted by Thor for their piety
and devotion and so, during his sweeping
reforms of the Ecclesiarchy, he made them the
official Chambers Militant of the Ecclesiarchy;
charged as much with looking for corruption
within the Adeptus Ministorium itself as with
persecuting the enemies of the faith. The
Daughters of the Emperor were divided into
four Orders and given a new name to carry
into combat; the Sisters of Battle.
In 878.M38, two new Orders were
founded, creating six Major Orders who
honour as founder - in fact or spirit - a saint
who accompanied Alicia Dominica to the
Golden Throne.
2. Organisation and Hierarchy
The Adepta Sororitas is part of
the Ecclesiarchy and is divided between two
Convents - the Convent Prioris located
on Terra and the Convent Sanctorum based
on Ophelia VII, although in practice their
forces are spread throughout the Galaxy.
The overall commander and spiritual
leader of the entire Sisterhood is the Abbess of
the Adepta Sororitas, although the position is
currently unoccupied. As the leader of the
Adepta Sororitas, the Abbess is sometimes
elected into the High Lords of Terra.
Below the Abbess are
the Prioresses of the two Convents who are in
charge of their Convent and the various Orders
based there.
The Convents of the Sisterhood are
organized into several Orders. The Orders each
have different roles and responsibilities. There
are four distinct classes of major Order, plus
an unknown number of minor orders. The
types of major Order are:
 Orders Militant - The "Sisters of
Battle", the military arm of the
Sororitas
 Orders Hospitaller - Surgeons,
physicians and nurses
  Orders Dialogous - Scholars dealing
with languages and translation
 Orders Famulous - Diplomats,
chamberlains and advisors for
Imperial noble families
It is not uncommon for a Sister to
transfer from one of the Orders to another,
particularly if a Battle Sister has become
injured or is too old for combat they may
transfer to one of the non-militant Orders.
Each of the major Orders follows the
same basic hierarchical structure:
 Order - Led by the head Canoness,
called the Canoness Superior, who
runs the entire Order.
 Preceptory - A subsidiary convent or
a large tactical detachment with up to
1,000 Sisters led by a Canoness
Preceptor.
 Commandery - Normally smaller
convents or detachments of militant
Sisters with up to 200 Sisters, led by
a Canoness Commander.
 Mission - The smallest organisation
of Sisters, consisting of a few units
and can be led by a Canoness or the
lesser Palatine.
It should be noted that the non-
militant Orders operate mainly at Mission and
Commandery levels - Preceptory is a largely
organisational tier. For example, a
Commandery of the Order Hospitallier could
be a staff of sisters working in a field hospital
whilst a Mission of the Orders Famulous could
be a handful of Sisters engaged in a trade
delegation.
3. The Orders Militant
The Orders Militant are the Sororitas
known as the Sisters of Battle. They are widely
recognised and are the most numerous of the
Orders, with each Order Militant numbering in
the tens of thousands of holy warriors. They
are armed and equipped with some of the most
powerful weapons available within the
Imperium, and are tasked with waging Wars of
Faith, purging heresy and corruption, and
protecting the property, relics and persons of
the Ecclesiarchy.
 Order of the Ebon Chalice: Based
within the Covenant Prioris, the Order
of the Ebon Chalice wear black
armour and white cloaks, and were
founded in M37 by Saint Alicia
Dominica. Their colours, doctrine and
traditions are a direct continuation of
those of the Daughters of the
Emperor.
 Order of the Argent Shroud: Based
within the Covenant Prioris, the Order
of the Argent Shroud wear silver
armour and white robes, and were
founded in M37 by Saint Silvana.
They are traditionally silent and
altruistic, and given towards selfless
heroism.
 The Order of the Sacred Rose: Based
within the Covenant Prioris, the Order
of the Sacred Rose wear white armour
and black robes, and were founded in
M38 in honour of Saint Arabella.
They are renowned for their
determination, heavy firepower and
their desire to avoid rash decisions.
 Order of the Valorous Heart: Based
within the Covenant Sanctorum, the
Order of the Valorous Heart wear
black armour and black robes, and
were founded in M37 by Saint Lucia.
They are a highly penitent Order,
 believing they must atone for the
Brides of the Emperors' unwitting
support of Vandire.
 Order of Our Martyred Lady: Based
within the Covenant Sanctorum, the
Order of Our Martyred Lady wear
black armour and red robes, and were
founded in M37 by Saint Katherine.
Prior to their losses during the Third
War for Armageddon, the Order was
known as the Order of the Fiery Heart
and wore black robes.
 Order of the Bloody Rose: Based
within the Covenant Sanctorum, the
Order of the Bloody Rose wear blood
red armour and black robes, and were
founded in M38 to honour Saint
Mina. They are known for their swift
attacks.
 Records exist for at least 14 Minor
Order Militant.
 Order of His Sanguine Tears: A
Minor Order Militant based in the
Prosperitas Sector, they came to
support the Order of Our Martyred
Lady and are named for the tears of
blood wept by the statues of the
Emperor after the rioting of heretics.
 Order of the Steepled Keep: A Minor
Order Militant currently deployed in
the Bastion Stars. Clad in pearl white
armour, hey suffered heavily at the
hands of the Archenemy. Praise their
sacrifice.
4. The Orders Hospitaller
The Orders Hospitaller are non-
militant Sororitas trained as nurses, physicians
and surgeons who operate in both civilian and
military environments.
 Order of the Cleansing Water: Based
within the Covenant Prioris.
 Order of the Torch: Based within the
Covenant Prioris.
 Order of the Eternal Candle: Based
within the Covenant Sanctorum.
 Order of Serenity: Based within the
Covenant Sanctorum.
 Records exist for at least 1 Minor
Order Hospitaller.
 Order of the Sanguine Redemption: A
Minor Order Hospitaller currently
deployed in the Prosperitas Sector.
5. The Orders Dialogous
The Orders Dialogous are non-
militant Sororitas who specialise in language
and scholasticism. They are experts in
handling and translating texts - even those
heretical or xenos in nature.
 Order of the Sacred Oath: Based
within the Covenant Prioris.
 Order of the Lexicon: Based within
the Covenant Prioris.
 Order of the Holy Word: Based
within the Covenant Sanctorum.
 Order of the Quill: Based within the
Covenant Sanctorum.
6. The Orders Famulous
The Orders Famulous are non-
militant Sororitas often attached to noble
houses, merchant guilds and other such
institutions. They act as diplomats,
ambassadors, advisors and chamberlains and
often possess a large knowledge of Imperial
bloodlines and rulership.
 Oder of the Holy Seal: Based within
the Covenant Prioris.
  Order of the Sacred Coin: Based
within the Covenant Prioris.
 Order of the Key: Based within the
Covenant Sanctorum. The Order of
the Key is currently active in the
Prosperitas Sector.
 Order of the Gate: Based within the
Covenant Sanctorum.
 Records exist for at least 2 Minor
Order Famulous.

7. The Orders Pronatus

The Orders Pronatus are non-militant
Sororitas who specialise in retrieving,
guarding, studying and repairing relics and
other artefacts of importance to the
Ecclesiarchy. Records exist for at least 3
Minor Orders Pronatus. There are no Major
Orders Pronatus.
 The Order of the Eternal Gate: An
Order Protanus currently deployed in
the Prosperitas Sector.

8. The Orders Sabine

The Orders Sabine are comprised of
Sororitas who accompany the Missionarius
Galaxia to rediscovered worlds. They
specialise in infiltrating primitive societies and
introducing elements of the Blessed Imperial
Cult to locals. There are no Major Orders
Sabine.
THE PROSPERITAS SECTOR: A GUIDE
TO KEY WORLDS
At the spinward edge of the Segmentum
Obscurus lies the Prosperitas Sector. Named
once because of the bounty of raw materials
that it provided the Imperium, the Sector’s
history is one of war and misfortune – once
thought lost to anarchy and uprisings, it is only
through the great military war machine of the
Prosperitas Crusade that many of the worlds
within the sector were retaken – and it seems
that the bounties of the sector would once
again become a jewel in the Imperium’s
crown.
HIVE WORLDS
a. Duroverum
Designated as the Capitol of the Prosperitas
Sector, Duroverum is the seat of Imperial
Governance, though rule of the sector is split
between the military leadership of the Office
of the Warmaster – it is Duroverum where the
Sector Governor reigns.
b. Halaerus III
The population of Helaerus live inside one of
several dozen hives, spread geometrically
across the planet's surface. Each city is linked
via a series of rapid transport lines, built along
geoformed earthworks, laid down by the
planets early colonists.
c. Korimesta
One of the oldest planets in the Sector,
Korimesta was once a hub of trade. Now it is
an idol of fallen splendour; the world’s
atmosphere polluted by industry has forced its
inhabitants into huge Hive-cities built around
mountains.
AGRI-WORLDS
d. Anaximund Alpha
The only known Knight World of the Sector,
Anaximunds sole duty is to feed the worker-
population of Naximus Prime. Its rulers House
Qureshi, have ridden their War-Engines to the
defence of the Mechanicus and the Imperium
on many occasions.
e. Kydos
A small, dense world covered in phenomenally
deep planetary ocean, which support a vast
range of flora and fauna.
DEATH WORLDS
f. Brassilia

g. Shadowglow
Shrouded in near-permanent darkness by a
complex lunar cycle, Shadowglow is a
freezing, inhospitable desert world. The planet
is home to a race of abhumans known as
Raivans whose fanatical loyalty to the Imperial
Cult, combined with superior strength and
speed, make Shadowglow a fertile recruiting
ground for the Crusade.
FORGE WORLDS
h. Castellum
Rival to Ferrareus, Castellum is the youngest
of the Forge Worlds, having only been
founded in mid M.41. Although not as
industrialised as other Forges, it is better
known for the ancient pre-Imperial ruins found
in it's snow-capped mountain regions.
i. Ferraeus
Taken from Hereteks early in the Prosperitas
Crusade. Ferraeus is the victim of millennia of
pollution that has made the air toxic, and
forced its inhabitants to live their lives in
environment suits.
j. Naximus Prime
Rediscovered in 401.M41. Naximus Prime is
not welcoming to the Imperium. Rigidly
independent, it's Forges accept Imperial work-
orders but do so at their own whim. The three
Temple-Moons of the Planet, serve as heavily
armed defences to the system.
FERAL AND FEUDAL WORLDS
k. Butonia
Conquered for its Carbon-3 deposits, the
majority of Butonia is a feudal low-
advancement society, though it's Capitol and
Noble Houses are reaching Imperial-level
advancement thanks to the mining efforts on
their world. Serf rebellions in 537.M41 under
the guidance of a supposed Living Saint, have
disrupted supplies from this world.
l. Caracas
A primordial world where the majority of the
population are nomadic tribesmen, Caracas is
covered mostly in dense forest in the
equatorial and tropical regions, and tundra
towards the poles. The world is valued solely
for its hardy human population.
m. Merewald
Merewald is a world of few natural threats and
a generally warm, equable climate suitable for
cultivation. Its population are spread
widely; there are few towns and no cities as
such, most of the inhabitants are peasants ruled
from the castles and palaces of the Noble
Houses.
n. Morghull
Morghull is a heavily-forested feral world at
the edge of the Subsector Tertius. The natives
consist of scattered bands of iron-age nomads
who roam the endless forests, following herds
of local herbivores. Known for their hardy
physiques and physical prowess, Morghullites
are dour, aggressive and brave, but also highly
superstitious and mistrustful of outsiders.
SHRINE WORLDS
o. Agrial III
 Subsector Tertius
 Population: 1.1million
An ancient shrine world covered in dusty
sepulchres and echoing chapels, Agrial III is a
seldom-mentioned backwater planet that
contains possibly one of the largest libraries in
the entire Segmentum.
Centuries ago Agrial was a powerful and
populous shrine world with significant
influence in the politics of the Prosperitas
Sector. Located on a primary trade route
through the subsector, countless traders and
pilgrims stopped off at Agrial every year,
either to refuel and resupply before moving on
or to worship at the numerous temples.
It was not just its holy shrines which drew
pilgrims, however. Agrial was well known for
the vast libraries that each temple-city
maintained, together forming one of the largest
and most comprehensive collections of
knowledge in the Sector.
Collecting information on countless subjects
and in endless formats, the libraries of Agrial
attracted countless scholars and sages, and
even members of the holy Inquisition, all of
whom came to study the vast catalogue of
information. All were welcome to read freely
of the books, tomes, scrolls and hololiths, and
to spend as much time doing so as they
desired; all that the Scribe-Priests asked was a
small donation to the upkeep of the libraries
and also a donation of knowledge to the library
itself. Each visitor was asked to write down
something –whether a short titbit of
information or an entire treatise was up to the
visitor- and add it to the archives of Agrial.
Trade routes are known to change however,
and when they did, they brought about the end
of the importance of Agrial. Without the
income brought by the traders the shrine world
faded into obscurity; the once-thronging streets
are now quiet and the holy sepulchres and
reliquaries dusty and often neglected. A few
pilgrims and knowledge-seekers still visit
Agrial, but now the libraries are echoing,
cobweb-choked and dark, home to a few
ancient custodians and ageing Scribe-priests.
p. Nivalis
 Subsector Primus
 Population: 3.5billion
Nivalis is a Shrine World first and foremost,
with piety driven into the very bones of the
land. Travellers and pilgrims say that every
valley and secluded peak boasts its own shrine
to the God-Emperor and His saints. Some of
the highest peaks have been carved into
massive likenesses of the great Heroes of the
Imperium, the greatest of these visible from
distant orbit. Since 984.M41 the world has
been beset by civil strife, and is currently
occupied by the Adeptus Sororitas.
An ancient seat of nobility in the Sector,
Nivalis is an inhospitable but beautiful planet
just far enough inside it’s sun’s orbit to avoid
the designation of Ice World. The habitable
zone on the planet is restricted to a
mountainous strip a few hundred kilometres
wide at the Equator, with the rest of the planet
locked in permanent glacial cold.
The mountains are home to a hardy, hospitable
breed of Imperial citizens who greatly prize
physical courage and cunning. Their favoured
hobby is hunting, and anyone of birth or
breeding on the planet is expected to prove
their worth by tracking and killing one of the
many dangerous mountain beasts. Nivalians
view the wearing of furs, or jewellery made
from the teeth or claws of one’s kills, as a
status symbol, and tend to look down on those
who do not wear them.
The constant presence of pilgrims travelling to
and from the planet has led to extensive
development in the urban centres. The capital
and many secondary cities boast all the
facilities that the discerning and pious citizen
might need, and there is an extensive transport
network connecting the most popular
pilgrimage sites. In happier times, it was said
that one could walk into a cathedral in the
capital and find worshippers from every world
in the Sector at prayer together.
Nivalis’ peaceful existence came to an abrupt
end in 539.M41. According to official records,
a group of heretics disrupted the traditional
annual religious festivities, leading to
widespread panic and rioting. The riots spread
in an uncontrolled wave across the planet,
taking the meagre Planetary Defence Force by
surprise and shattering the once-peaceful
planet into civil chaos. The Ecclesiarchy called
in the Adeptus Sororitas to suppress and
control the unrest, with the Order of our
Martyred Lady supplying a large operational
deployment of Militant Sororitas.
While engaged in counterinsurgency and
stabilisation, the Sisters reported a miracle
whose echoes are still felt in the religious and
political hierarchies of the Sector. Every statue
of the God-Emperor on the planet, from tiny
household icons to the kilometre-high colossus
at the heart of the planetary capital, was
witnessed to weep tears of blood. In the wake
of this miracle, the Sisters engaged in
offensive operations to return Nivalis to order
with a bloodthirsty piety unlike anything seen
before on the planet.
Nivalis is now under the de facto rule of
Canoness Asenath Dinah, the commander of
the Sororitas Mission on the planet. The
ongoing civil conflict is suppressed – often
brutally – by the Sisters of the newly named
Order of His Sanguine Tears. Sisters
Hospitaller from the Order of the Cleansing
Water provide medical and pastoral support to
the citizens of this blighted world. With the
insurgency kept to a quiet simmer by the
security presence of the Sisters Militant, the
planet has seen a large deployment of Sisters
Pronatus from the Order of the Eternal Gate.
Their mission is to restore the large number of
major shrines to the Emperor and His Saints
damaged in the course of the unrest, and to
recover sacred artefacts stolen or hidden
during the riots.
Nivalis is no longer the safe haven for pilgrims
that it once was, with scattered groups of
heretics and planetary nationalists – bitter at
the long arm of the Ecclesiarchy “usurping”
their government – still holding out in the rural
mountain areas despite the Sorors’ best efforts.
Nevertheless the main shrine-cities are largely
peaceful, and it is not uncommon to see
officers of the Imperial Guard and Navy
visiting the planet to receive a blessing on
behalf of their troops before deploying onto
the front lines of the Crusade.
WAR WORLDS
q. Henlock
Currently held by the forces of the Archenemy,
Henlock was an Adeptus Mechanicus world,
valued for its Titan training grounds and
ancient Heresy-era Titan Graveyard. When
Archenemy forces took the world in 538.M41
a desperate counter-attack by the Imperium led
to a disaster that cost the life of the Warmaster
of the Prosperitas Crusade.
r. Persephon IV
Persephon IV has born the brunt of the savage
greenskins of Waagh!! Gazbag since 531.M41.
Much of it's original glory has been ravaged by
the Orks, and it's people fight an endless war in
order to ensure that the greenskin menace is
contained there.

SPACE STATIONS
t. Polarnus Station
Polarnus is an orbital habitat-cum-shipyard, a
giant asteroid hollowed into a multitude of
labyrinthine tunnels. It is an ancient trade hub,
now acting as the headquarters for the front-
line elements of Crusade High Command, and
is constantly bustling with the business of
making ships and soldiers ready for war.

FRONTIER WORLDS
u. Mawson's Wake
At the rimward edge of the sector, Mawson’s
Wake is a patchily-inhabited struggling
frontier planet with a history of revolt. Largely
desertified and scarred by open-cast mining,
the Wake ekes out an existence dependent on
an ancient vehicle manufactorum, and pays its
tithe with conscripts from among the resentful
populace.

LX. Catechisms of Hate
1. Hate the Xenos. The Xenos is
wretched. The Xenos longs to debase
humankind. Better a thousand die
than the seed of alien-worship corrupt
a million. Thus we hate for Terra.
2. Hate the Mutant. The Mutant is the
offspring of Humanity, but they are a
beast. The Mutant’s desires may be
pure, but their body can never be
pure. Humankind will not be pure
until the last is dead. Thus we hate for
Terra.
3. Hate the Heretic. The Heretic is more
vile than either Mutant or Xenos, for
they had a choice. They had a choice,
and they chose the way of damnation.
Even the suspicion of heresy is cause
enough to kill. A martyr’s death
brings glory to Terra. A heretic’s
death brings glory to Terra. Thus we
hate for Terra.
4. Hate the Traitor. The Traitor is
damned, for they have betrayed their
humanity. The traitor is reviled, for
they have turned against their faith.
The cause of treason is irrelevant. The
means of treason is irrelevant. The
Traitor is pursued, for their very
existence is anathema. Thus we hate
for Terra.
LXI. Blessing for those Undertaking
Arduous Duties
O Holy Emperor, watch over your servants.
The path of the faithful is not easy, yet in Your
name it must be walked; the burdens of service
are not light, yet in Your name shall they be
borne. Be Thou the star in our darkness; the
light that shows truth and the beacon of home.
Be Thou the guide and the guardian; the
scourge and the saviour. For in Your Name,
what must be done, shall be done.
LXII. Blessing for Food
O Holy Emperor, we draw our strength from
that which we consume in Thy blessed Name;
as we draw strength from the salvation of Thy
cleansing flame. Purify Thou that which
sustains us with the Glory of Thy Holy Light.
Scourge it of all taint, cleanse it of all
contamination; let it be neither despoiled nor
decayed. For we, Your instruments, are weak
flesh, but Your Throne is Eternal.
LXIII. Blessing for Good News
Glory be to the God-Emperor, for the
Righteous shall have their reward. All praise to
the Throne of Terra, for the Faithful shall see
their triumph. Blessed by this day of days, for
there are marvels in the land, and the marvels
are His Signs. For in His Sight all promises are
kept, all transgressions are punished, and all
faithful souls find Glory in His Name. Glory
be the Emperor; it is right and just that we
should praise Him, for all that is good comes
through His Will.

a. Opening
We speak sub rosa; may my eyes and ears be
His, and may my tongue speak only as He
wills. Child of the Creed, speak thou and be
heard, for He is with us.
Imperator miserere, for I have sinned; I come
before you as a penitent.
Penitent, I sit before you as a candle. That light
that burns before you is Their light, and you sit
with Them. The Emperor loves you, sinner, as
They love all humanity. Speak your sin, that it
might burn with Their fire.
b. The First Absolution
We live only at His sufferance; to whom can
we reach for guidance? Only to you, O
Emperor, who are justly angry at our failings.
Shut not your ears to our prayers, but spare us;
turn not your gaze from our suffering, but
forgive us; where our human failings cause us
to fall short of our duty, grant Thy strength to
lead us to Your light.
Child of the Creed, of the Imperium of
Humanity, hear me; your sins are confessed,
your repentance is sincere, your penance has
been mighty and heartfelt. In the midst of all
our darkness, there is light; for He is our
beacon in the night. His grace, our strength and
our salvation; His mercy, our forgiveness and
