Introduction
The purpose of this report is to find a solution for block D2 column KZ 2-D which is casted with less
amount of rebar than the one indicated in the drawing. The design reinforcement value for this
column is 24Φ24 + 4Φ32. However, mistake was done on site and the contractor casted the
indicated column with reinforcement value of 20 Φ 20.

2. Anchorage Length
The diameter 24 bars can be lapped at this stage of construction and anchor the bars
inside the water proofing slab.

The figure below indicates the existing site condition.

Figure 2 Schematic Drawing of KZ 2-D at current stage

As indicated in the above image the top 250 mm water proofing slab is not casted so the
additional bars can be anchored inside the water proofing slab and attain the necessary
development length.

2.1. Anchorage Length Calculation

Lbd = α lb,rqd ≥lb, min
Where
α = Conservatively 1.0
lb,rqd = (Φ/4) (σsd / fbd )
where
Φ = 32 (taking the maximum diameter of bar)
σsd = Design stress in the bar at the ULS
= 500/1.15 = 435 MPa
fbd = Ultimate bond stress
fbd = 2.25 η1 η2 fctd
where
η1 = 1.0 for good bond conditions
η1 = 1.0 for bar diameters ≤ 32 mm
fctd = αct fctk / 1.5
fctd = 1 x 2 / 1.5
= 1.33 MPa
fbd = 1.33 x 2.25 = 3.0 MPa

lb,rqd = (32/4) (435 / 3 ) mm

lb,rqd = 1160 mm
the additional bars shall be developed a distance of 1200 mm from the center line of the
rebar to the left and right direction. The figure below indicates the additional rebars and
the development length required.

3. Rebar Placing Order
The image below shows the section of column KZ-D which is currently existing in the site. All
rebars in this column are diameter 20.

Figure 4 Column Section of Existing Site Condition

The designer proposes actual diameter 24 and 32 bars to be places in the site according to the
following schematic plan. The arrows in the figure below indicates the additional diameter 24
bars. All the additional bars shall be inside the confining hoops and stirrups.

The additional diameter 32 bars shall be positioned at midpoint of the confining stirrup as
indicated in the figure below. Additional tie bars shall be provided to anchor the two diameter
32 bars at the opposite end.

4. Conclusion and Recommendation

The designer proposes additional bars to be embedded inside the water proofing slab with a
minimum development length of 1250 mm measured from the center of the bar. The contractor
shall follow the procedure sent in the previous chapters to place the additional bars. Care shall be
taken during the casting process to avoid any segregation due reinforcement bar congestion. This
shall be a onetime solution and the contractor shall refrain from making such mistakes in future.
