3151909 – Heat Transfer
Assignment 01 : Conduction Heat Transfer

NOTE: Clearly mention all assumptions made for each problem.

1 Derive equation for heat conduction in a cylindrical geometry involving uniform heat generation
under unsteady state conduction.
2 Derive the formula of thermal resistance for one dimensional heat conduction involving:
(i) Cartesian geometry.
(ii) Spherical geometry involving only radial heat conduction. (GTU, Dec 2016)
(iii) Cylindrical geometry involving only radial heat conduction.

3 Calculate the heat loss through flat sheet of glass 2 m x 1 m and 5 mm thick when the surface
temperatures are 20°C and 5°C. (Use reference book for value of thermal conductivity)
4 A steam pipe has an external diameter of 75 mm and it is covered with lagging 25 mm thick with a
thermal conductivity of 0.09 W/m K. The surface temperature of the lagging is 300°C on the
inside and 80°C on the outside. Calculate the heat loss per meter length.
5 A spherical vessel 2 m diameter has insulation layer (lagging) of 300 mm thickness. The thermal
conductivity of the lagging is 0.1 W/m K. The temperature of the inside and outside of the lagging
is 180°C and 40° C respectively. Calculate the rate of heat loss and heat flux at the inner and outer
surface of the lagging.

6 A wall with an area of 25 m2 is made up of four layers. On the inside is plaster 15 mm thick, then
there is brick 100 mm thick, then insulation 60 mm thick and finally brick 100 mm thick.
The thermal conductivity of plaster is 0.1 W/m K.
The thermal conductivity brick is 0.6 W/m K
The thermal conductivity the insulation is is 0.08 W/m K
The inner surface temperature of the wall is 18°C and the outer is -2°C.
Calculate the heat loss and the temperature at the interface between the plaster and the brick.

7 A steel pipe (k= 35 W/m K) with inner diameter 50 mm and outer diameter 60 mm is insulated
using insulation material having (K=0.055 W/m.K). The temperature interface between pipe and
insulation is 573 K, while the temperature on outside of insulation must not exceed 343 K, with
permissible heat loss of 700 W/m. calculate (1) the minimum thickness of insulation and (2) the
temperature of inside surface of pipe. (GTU, Nov 2018)

8 A plane wall of thickness L is subjected to a heat flux q= 0 at its left surface, while its right surface
dissipates heat by convection with a heat transfer coefficient h in to an ambient at T ∞ . Write the
boundary conditions at the two surfaces of the wall. (GTU, Dec 2016).
