Leadership Interview

Interviewee: Summer Moran, APRN, FNP-C.

1. What are the most important values you demonstrate as a leader?

I value trustworthiness, good communication, and humility when in a leadership position.

2. What is the difference between a Team Leader and a Team Manager?

A team leader motivates and inspires people while a team manager is followed and

listened to out of obligation.

3. What is your greatest strength?

I am very respectful and patient.

4. What would you consider to be your greatest weakness?

I am a perfectionist and struggle when people take longer to complete tasks and throw me

off schedule.

5. How do you get others to accept your ideas?

I try to be a good communicator and explain my logic and thought process behind ideas.

6. How would you go about praising a team member in public?

I tend to acknowledge what the whole team is doing well, but then single people out that

have gone above and beyond.

7. How often do you feel it is necessary to meet with your team?

It is always good to check in daily with your team to address any problems, but I always

like to fix issues as they happen rather than let things build up.

8. Describe a time you took a leadership position when you did not have the title of a leader?

I had only been a nurse for one year when I began volunteering for extra duties and

learning as much as I could to be able to be a leader during complicated admissions and

procedures.

9. How do you go about getting cohesion among a team who disagree?

I have to be willing to listen to everyone and their ideas; even if people still don't agree

with you it's important for them to understand the "why" behind your decisions.

10. What sort of leader would your team say you are?

I think my team would describe me as a laid-back leader.

11. How do you motivate your team?

I motivate my team by my own actions. A leader needs to know how to perform

everyone's role and you should never ask a team member to do something you would not

be able to do yourself.

12. What is the most difficult part of being a leader?

The most difficult part of being a leader is leading by example and getting along with

different personality types.

13. What motivates you to be a leader?

I want to be someone that people look up to and rely on; those things give me a sense of

pride.
14. What do you believe is a leader's best asset?

I believe a leader’s best asset is a passion for the work they are doing.

15. How do you lead through change?

It is important to be flexible and clearly communicate objectives to lead through change.

Reflection

I chose to interview Mrs. Moran because of her position as a nurse practitioner. I am

interested in the possibility of becoming a nurse practitioner in the future myself. My interview

with Mrs. Moran gave me some insight into what it is like to be not only a nurse practitioner, but

also a leader. I especially enjoyed her description of how she motivates her team. It is very

important to lead by example and is an integral part of a successful team. I also appreciated her

advice on solving problems as they happen rather than letting them build up. Problem build up in

the workplace can lead to stress, irritability, and overall unproductive behavior. I feel that this, as

well as the other information Mrs. Moran has given me about being a leader, will greatly benefit

me in my future career as a nurse.
