Instruction:- Answer all questions.

Exam rules and goals:

a) The goal of this exam is to provide a strong incentive for each of you to review the
lectures and your own notes. Please take this opportunity to synthesize for
yourselves what you have learned in this course, so that you can make it your own.

b) This is an open-book take-home exam. Do it YOURSELF, without consulting other

students. But feel free to consult all the lectures and readings on the class website,
plus your favorite reference books and your notes. Don’t spend time roaming the
web to find answers, the only websites you may use are our own class site, and the
websites linked to from our class site.

c) There is no particular format for your responses. But please write legibly.

d) What most lecturers interested in is your conceptual understanding. So when you

write out your answers to the exam questions, include as much explanation as
possible. Write down the physical reasoning you used to reach each answer, in
words or equations or both. Draw sketches wherever appropriate to illustrate your
ideas.

e) Include UNITS in all equations and formulae.

QUESTION 1 [25 Marks]

a) In radio communication system it is impossible to transmit signal directly from

transmitter to receiver due to few drawbacks including height of antenna,
interference, poor receiver’s reception and effectiveness of the power radiated by
the antenna’s transmitter itself. Explain the drawbacks due to height of the

antenna radio communication system. (Hint: Give situation and example

in few cases). [7 Marks]

b) Frequency modulation (FM) is the eqncoding of information in a carrier wave by

varying the instantaneous frequency of the wave.

(i) With the aid of block diagram, construct a full transmitter and receiver
of communication that transmitting and receiving FM signals.
[Hint: There should be more than 10 components in the block
diagram] [5 Marks]
(ii) Explain on the process of the encoding in FM signals based on your
answer in Question (b)(i). [9 Marks]

c) Justify the reason on the variation of the bandwidth’s values when calculated
by using Bessel’s function and Carson’s rule.

QUESTION 2 [25 marks]

Consider sending a message of <Hi> that consists of 16-bit from source to

destination. Your message must go through the channel coding and line coding
before transmit. (Hint: design your own information interchange code)

(a) Consider the use of Hamming codes in the channel coding to encode the 16-
bit message.
(i) Construct the hamming codeword for this message.
(12 marks)

(ii) By inverting one message bit in Hamming codeword (to represent

a 1-bit error) and demonstrate how the recipient can use the
check bits to correct the inverted bit.
(8 marks)

(b) Encode the output message from channel coding into the following line
codes.
(i) Non Return to Zero-Mark (NRZ-M)
(ii) Manchester
