ASSEMBLY &
INSTALLATION

2-1
2-2
Chapter 2 Assembly & Installation

OVERVIEW
This chapter describes the steps required to assemble, install and align the Vertical
Wall Stand/Frame and how to install the completed assembly in your facility, including
making all required electrical connections.

UNPACKING
Note: Examine all cartons and crates carefully at time of
delivery. If damage is apparent, have delivery driver write a
"Demand Shipment Note" on copies of the freight bill, sign,
and file appropriate carrier claim. Should you discover
concealed damage, immediately notify the transporting
agent and ask for an "Inspection of Damage." Carrier will
not accept concealed damage claim if filed after 15 days
from date of receipt of merchandise.
The Vertical Wall Stand/Frame is shipped in separate pieces as follows:
• Vertical Wall Stand/Frame Assembly
• Associated system components, depending on the model and options - a
Base Cover, Top Cap, trim weights, cable covering (with bucky and/or Ion
Chamber equipped systems only), cassette tray, power input cable,
hardware bag (including coil cord tie-down clamp and ground stud), patient
handgrips (optional), and Operator and Service Manuals.
Open the crate or carton marked "packing list enclosed" first. Locate and remove the
packing list. Do not dispose of packing material until packing list is matched with
actual parts received. If any damaged parts are found, notify the shipping or freight
company immediately (the manufacturer is relieved of any responsibility for damage
during shipment after unit is picked up by the carrier). Should there be a shortage of
parts, notify Quantum Medical Imaging’s Service Department.

REQUIRED TOOLS
The following tools and materials are required to complete the assembly and installa-
tion procedures:
• Socket Wrench Set
• Assorted Phillips and slot blade screwdrivers
• Drill (and masonry bit if concrete construction)
• Bubble level

ASSEMBLY/INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
The following paragraphs describe how to assemble the Vertical Wall stand/Frame.
Assembly instructions for Model QW-400 are described separately because of the dif-
ferences in this device’s design and construction. Assembly instructions for Models
QW-420, QW-420-D and QW-420-S are very similar in design and construction and

are therefore combined into one set of instructions with model differences noted
where necessary.
MODELS QW-420, QW-420-D, QW-420-S ASSEMBLY/INSTALLATION
To assemble the Model QW-420, QW-420-D or QW-420-S Vertical Wall Stand,
refer to Figures 2-1 through 2-7 and proceed as follows:
1. Rest the bottom end of the Vertical Column on soft support material.
2. Remove shipping bolt located in Flat Base Mounting Plate (see Figure 2-1).

Figure 2-1. Removing the Shipping Bolt

3. Model QW-420-D with IDC XPLORER Digital Receptor: Refer to
Appendix A for installation instructions. Model QW-420-D with QXR-9C
Digital Receptor: Refer to Appendix B for installation instructions.

WARNING! The Vertical Column weighs

approximately 102.1 kg (225 lb) and requires two
persons to lift.

4. Carefully raise the Vertical Column to an upright position. The Receptor Cab-
inet will rise up the column because of the pull of the counterweight.
5. Connect red and black wires from Quantum generator (Interface Board) or
from a double (or reinforced) insulated 24 Vdc power source (must meet con-
struction/performance criteria per UL 2601-1) to Terminal Board TB1 termi-
nals 1 and 2, respectively (see Models QW-420, QW-420-D, QW-420-S
Electrical Wiring Diagram in Chapter 5, DIAGRAMS). Use cable ties, as
required, to manage cable.

Chapter 3 Theory of Operation

OVERVIEW
Models QW-400, QW-420, , QW-420-D, and QW-420-S feature sufficient vertical travel to
accommodate all upright exams, and fail-safe electromagnetic locks for secure image
receptor positioning.
MECHANICAL OPERATION - MODELS QW-420, QW-420-D, AND QW-420-S
Smooth vertical (upward and downward) image receptor movement is achieved by
attachment of the receptor to a Vertical Trolley, which rides on eight spring-loaded
radial ball bearings along with four metal shielded guide bearings bolted to it.
MECHANICAL OPERATION - MODEL QW-400
Smooth vertical (upward and downward) image receptor movement is achieved by
attachment of the receptor to a set of four spring-loaded Receptor Bearing Guides.
ELECTRICAL OPERATION - MODELS QW-420, QW-420-D, AND QW-420-S
See Figure 5-1 in Chapter 5, DIAGRAMS.
Two fail-safe brakes (24 Vdc electromagnets) are located at the top of the vertical col-
umn (part of the Vertical Pulley/Brake Assembly). When the electromagnets are de-
activated (i.e., the Receptor Cabinet Lock Release Button is not pressed), the fail-safe
brakes "grab" the counterweight cable pulleys securely, locking the vertical motion of
the receptor cabinet. Pressing the Receptor Cabinet Lock Release Button energizes
the 24 Vdc electromagnets, releasing the fail-safe brakes and allowing the counter-
weight cable pulleys to spin freely thereby enabling vertical motion of the receptor
cabinet.
ELECTRICAL OPERATION - MODEL QW-400
See Figure 5-2 in Chapter 5, DIAGRAMS.
A fail-safe brake (24 Vdc electromagnets) is located at the top right corner of the ver-
tical frame. When the electromagnet is de-activated (i.e., the Receptor Cabinet Lock
Release Button is not pressed), the fail-safe brake "grabs" the counterweight cable
pulley securely, locking the vertical motion of the receptor cabinet. Pressing the

FILM CABINET LOAD SIDE REVERSE PROCEDURE

It is possible to reconfigure the film cabinet on the Model QW-420 Wall Stand, to
achieve opposite side loading, if such a change should become necessary. Typically
the Wall Stand is ordered for either left- or right-loading characteristics, however with
the following procedure, and one replacement Cabinet Side Cover, referenced in the
Replacement Parts List (Table 4-1), a standard film cabinet, or a cabinet equipped
with a bucky can be easily converted. Inasmuch as changing the load side on the
standard film cabinet, and the cabinet equipped with a bucky are parallel processes
(with the bucky unit requiring a few extra steps) the diagram in Figure 4-5 provides
reference information supported by step-by-step instructions.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Prior to beginning the procedures described in this section, the Service Technician
must obtain the correct Cabinet Side Cover for the loading configuration desired.
Table 4-1 contains the specific information required to properly order the neces-
sary part. Care should be taken when ordering the Side Cover to specify whether,
or not, the cabinet is equipped with a Bucky, and from which side the cabinet will
load after the conversion has been completed.

Note: The procedures for the removal of covers and

handles are performed while the Film Cabinet is still
mounted to the Vertical Trolley of the Wall Stand. The
description below is based on a Cabinet with Overhead
Patient Hand Grip, and Bucky options. If the Film
Cabinet is not equipped with the Overhead Patient Hand
Grip option, the long mounting bracket will not be
present.

Appendix A Digital Receptor Installation

OVERVIEW
This section provides instructions for installing the Vieworks Model QXR 9C Digital
Receptor (hereinafter referred to as the Digital Receptor) onto the QW-420-D Vertical
Wall Stand. For additional information concerning the digital receptor, refer to the
Digital Receptor installation and operation documentation.
VIEWORKS QXR 9C DIGITAL RECEPTOR INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
The QW-420-D Vertical Wall Stand is designed to permit easy installation of the
Digital Receptor. The following steps describe how to mount the Digital Receptor
onto the QW-420-D Vertical Wall Stand. Proceed as follows:

CAUTION! To minimize the risk of damage, the

digital receptor requires two persons to install.
One person should be supporting the digital
receptor on each side when lowering it in its
mounting location within the housing.

1. Remove the Digital Receptor from its packaging, and position it for convenient
handling during mounting process, which requires a 2-man lift of the assem-
bly and attachment to the Wall Stand Trolley Adaptor Bracket, shown in Fig-
ure A-2.

Note: If the steel Mounting Bracket (shown in Figure

A-1) is not already mounted to the Digital Receptor
assembly, mount it with six (6) M8 socket head screws.

2. Position a person on either sides of the Digital Receptor assembly, so it can be

lifted and rotated into position for mounting to the Wall Stand Trolley Adaptor
Bracket.
3. Carefully, lift the Digital Receptor (in a coordinated fashion), and position it so
the tapped holes in the Mounting Bracket (three on each side) align with
those provided in the Wall Stand Trolley Adaptor Bracket.
4. Install six (6) 5/16 in. x 3/4 in. socket head screws to attach the Mounting
Bracket to the Wall Stand Trolley Adaptor Bracket.
