We use ‘there’ + verb To Be…..

1.- when we talk about something for the first time
2.- To say that something exists

ARE some pencils in a box

(PLURAL)

(Hay un libro en la mesa / Hay algunos lápices en una caja)

AFFIRMATIVE

There are five children in the garden

There is a big tree in the park

INTERROGATIVE

Is there a book on the table? Yes, there is / No, there isn’t

Are there pencils in a box? Yes, there are / No, there aren’t

What is there on the table? There is a book on the table

What is there in a box? There are some pencils in a box

NEGATIVE

There isn’t any book on the table

There aren’t any pencils in a box
