M ercury has been used f o r a va rie ty o f m edicin al pu rposes f o r centuries. E xposure to m ercury
can occur fro m environm ental, d ieta ry, a n d o ccu pation al sources. Since the beginning o f the
early 180 0 s, in term itten t controversy has surrounded the use o f m ercury in d en ta l am algam
restorations. A t the center o f this controversy are questions concerning the am ounts a n d effects
o f m ercury exposure to d en ta l p a tien ts a n d personnel. This rep o rt review s recen t scien tific
literatu re on the safety a n d use o f mercury in den tistry.
