Life is like a parabola, it has its ups and downs and you spend most of your time trying

to find the point –

My life could be described using this metaphorical parabola wherein the ups filliped my confidence and
the downs taught me life lessons to learn and carry forward. While I was aware of the significance that
academics hold in one’s life, I also realized the importance of having a sense of direction. My efforts and
interests were harnessed in the right direction during my one year national service in the gold
processing plant at Newmont Goldcorp. I not only gained a lot of practical experience but some reality
checks altered my academic aspect for the better. I received experience in all aspects of mineral
processing i.e. Metallurgy, Process engineering and Process operations. Mainly, I was involved in the
metallurgical aspects of gold processing from the elution circuit perspective. This was when I realized
the importance of proper planning and scheduling, devoid of which, insurmountable losses eventuate.

From then on, I decided to embark on a journey to build a career as a Metallurgist that would demand
an enhancement of my engineering and leadership skills for which reason I have decided to pursue MS
in Chemical Engineering Technology. After the service, I evolved as a mature aspirant in the field with
specific areas of interest such as Project Scheduling, learning new Mathematical Models and Process
Optimization techniques in mineral processing.

My dedication in construction management also won recognition from various professors who offered
valuable suggestions and guidance for my future aspirations in the field.

Following the discussions, I started achieving several small milestones in my field of interest by
undertaking related projects and gaining experience and knowledge. One such influential project was
Analysis of Irrigation Networks using Analytical Hierarchical Process mathematical model for assessing
the Global Water Productivity (GWP) status of irrigation networks.

Another notable project was Designing Self – Supporting Steel Chimney in which a simplified chimney
design was created, taking Paradip, Odisha, India as the place of study. The place demanded a short heat
up period and low thermal capacity and so a steel chimney was chosen above all other types.

My undergraduate thesis project was entitled Schedule Optimization of Construction Projects using
Location Based Management System(LBMS). In this project, a schedule of a residential project using
Critical Path Method and Location Based Management Concept, was prepared. The two techniques
were hence compared and optimized using a mathematical model named Analytical Hierarchical Process
by determining the consistency ratios.

The final conclusion was that the LBMS technique is indeed a more suitable technique for scheduling, as
it combines similar locations where activities could be started and advanced concurrently. Hence saving
a lot of time as compared to the CPM technique, where resources need to be dedicated to different
activities.

The last two years of my undergraduate study has made me research oriented and I made it my
ambition to become dexterous in the field of Construction Management. The graduate program at XXXX
University stands as a perfect match for my aspirations in this field. The extensive curriculum will
definitely provide me with the proficiency I need to gain an expertise in the field. Through this course I
want to specialize in Construction Management and augment my skills in advanced software.
I have the tenacity, grit and determination to meet your standard of research excellence. I am also
impressed with the research works of Prof.XXX in YYY domain, where I also find my strongest penchant.
Given the opportunity to be his Research Assistant, I can prove myself an indispensable aid to the team
as well as hone my research skills for future pursuits.

My dream is to become an expert in the field of Construction Management, where I wish to develop
new and improved techniques that could in turn permute the Construction Industry and cut down the
huge losses suffered by the industry due to inappropriate or outdated methods in construction. Hence I
plan to pursue PhD after my MS.

As a citizen of a culturally diverse country with the exposure of working with innumerable group projects
during my undergraduate studies; I am confident that I am equipped to get along with my peers in a
graduate school which is a concoction of different cultures.

In light of my earnest interest and valuable experience, I hope you will see in me a deserving candidate
to study at your excellent seat of knowledge with full financial aid and assistantship. I assure you of my
dedicated efforts that will prove me as an outstanding student in your program.
