Why is important the European Union for the existence of a global power balance?

Do not forget to mention the sources (author, year and the title of the source) of the
information you will use.

RACHMAN (2019) mentions that the EU is known to have a comparable weight in the competition
between China and the USA. In order to cope with them. In this context we can say that if the United
States decides to impose tariffs on European producers over the coming months, the EU can respond
with measures that impose a “suffering” comparable to the US. The EU is also taking unified action
against the forced transfer of technology from China.

The international importance of the EU should not be measured in terms of nation states. The joint
geographical, demographic, economic and diplomatic resources of the Member States give a Union
an important international identity. This identity is growing both because of this relative loss of
power by the United States and because of the end of the cold war; however, the greater stature of
the Union’s international identity is not only due to changes in the international context.

The EU is still a long way from being a military superpower, and may never become one. But it Is
already a key global player in trade and business regulation. That is important because, in the nuclear
age, superpowers are more likely to fight each other by economic rather than military means. But the
EU will survive the occasional policy divide directed at China or the US. The fact is that the package
of benefits provided by the EU can never be replicated by either superpower.
