ETHICS AND MULTICULTURAL ACTIVITIES 3

Consultants are required to offer their services in a professional manner and exercise their

mandates in an ethical manner (Dougherty, A. M. 2013). Adherence to ethical requirements

entails acknowledging the multi-cultural differences among members of the various groups of

people that require the services of consultants. The failure to consider the differences brought on

by varying cultures inhibits the effectiveness of the consulting process (Dixon, M. A., &

Dougherty, D. S. 2010). This is because of the reduced levels of understanding coupled with

increased frustrations that render the process content rather than process oriented.

The consultation process comprises of four different stages with each one having its own

distinct phases. Variations in the stages is brought on by the ethical and multi-cultural

considerations that are required to ensure that the consulting process will be successful

(Dougherty, A. M. 2013). During each stage of the consulting process, it is paramount that

ethical considerations together with multi-cultural sensitivity are maintained from the start to the

end.

The first stage, that is, the entry stage comprises of the creation of contracts and

exploitation of the needs of the organization or individual. This stage is also synonymous with

the psychological and physical entry phase of the consulting process (Dixon, M. A., &

Dougherty, D. S. 2010). Upon the conclusion of the entry stage, the diagnosis stage follows and

it is during this stage that reliable and relevant information is gathered. The collection of data

should be done in a manner that does not infringe an individual’s state of being from an ethical

and cultural stance (Remley, T., & Herlihy, B. 2010). The problem is also articulated at this stage

and the initial stages of the formulation of intervention activities and planning commence

(Dixon, M. A., & Dougherty, D. S. 2010). The implementation stage represents the 3rd

consultation stage and this is where the intervention plan is employed by the stakeholders after

carefully formulating a strategy and a plan. The final stage is the disengagement stage where

evaluation of the entire consultation process takes place. The review of the entire process allows

for necessary adjustments to be made to improve the consultation process.

The provision of services is centered around the person who is receiving the services.

This means that acknowledgement of multicultural differences allows for improved service

provision that is tailored to the group or individual receiving the service (Remley, T., & Herlihy,

B. 2010). It is paramount to ensure that at all times during the consulting stages, consultants must

uphold ethical requirements for the provision of desirable service.
