The Seven Life Processes
Some animals do this slowly and others do it very fast. Even plants do this, such as when they open and
close their petals, or turn to face the sun.
An action by an organism or part of an organism causing a change of position or place.
Living things start off small and get bigger!
A permanent increase in size and dry mass by an increase in cell number or cell size or both.
All living things need to get energy from the oxygen and nutrients they take in.
The chemical reactions that break down nutrient molecules in living cells to release energy.
All living things can make more of themselves.
The processes that make more of the same kind of organism.
Plants and animals respond to things that happen around them. Plants are sensitive to light, for example.
Animals are sensitive to many things: light, sound, smells, and more.
The ability to detect or sense changes in the environment (stimuli) and to make responses.
All living things (even plants) have to get rid of waste, such as moisture (sweat) and going to the toilet!
Removal from organisms of toxic materials, the waste products of metabolism (which means
chemical reactions in cells including respiration) and substances in excess of requirements.
All living things need to take substances from their environment to obtain energy, to grow and to stay
healthy.
Organisms take in nutrients (organic substances and mineral ions) and use them for energy, growth
and tissue repair.
