Air Management System

INTRODUCTION
The Air Management System (AMS) is related to various airplane
subsystems such as bleed control, environmental control, hot air leak
detection, crew oxygen monitoring, wing/stabilizer de-ice protection
and engine anti-ice.
The Air Management System consists of:
• Pneumatic System;
• Environmental Control System (ECS);
• Pressurization System.
Although the AMS also encloses the Pneumatic Ice Protection and
Oxygen Systems, they will be presented in segregated Sections.

Air Management System

PNEUMATIC SYSTEM
Bleed air is provided by both engines and goes into a single bleed
system which is used by:
• Environmental Control System (ECS);
• Wing and stabilizer de-ice;
• Engine anti-ice.
The bleed air inflow system has two independent flow paths; one from
each engine. Either flow path is capable of supplying sufficient bleed
air for cabin pressurization thus providing a redundant source of bleed.
The bleed system control is performed by actuating the two bleed
pressure regulating shutoff valves (PRSOV) located in each nacelle.
The PRSOVs function is to regulate the hot bleed air released to the
ECS (25 psig) and to provide a firewall shutoff capability for the bleed
air lines.
Before being delivered to the ECS, each bleed air flow path passes
through a heat exchanger and is cooled either by ram air or by a
ground cooling fan during ground operations with bleed extraction.
The PRSOV is automatically closed in case of a single engine takeoff
condition.
For utility service, the pneumatic system also allows air extraction for
de-ice boots, door seal, etc.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL SYSTEM (ECS)

The Environmental Control System (ECS) provides temperature
control for the cockpit and passenger cabin, cabin air recirculation,
conditioned air supply for gaspers, fan air cooling for avionics and
emergency ram air ventilation for cockpit smoke clearance.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL SYSTEM

The temperature control system monitors the cockpit, cabin and air
duct temperature to provide an automatic and independent zonal
control for the cabin and cockpit areas according to pilot selection.
The air temperature is controlled through Temperature Modulating
Valves (TMVs) which mix cooled air from the heat exchangers with hot
bleed air from the engines (PRSOVs). The heat exchangers are
cooled either by the ram air (in flight) or by the ground cooling fan.
Both TMVs independently control the temperature of the bleed air
released to the cabin and cockpit through the distribution ducts and
gaspers.
The TMVs may be automatically controlled by the system or manually
by the pilot through the AIR CONDITIONING panel.
Additionally, the flow control shutoff valves (FCSOV) regulate air flow
quantity in order to maintain adequate and safe supply pressure at any
engine operating condition.

VAPOR CYCLE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM (VCS)

When additional cooling is required, the temperature control system
automatically operates the VCS. The VCS has two evaporators
independently controlled and connected to a single compressor and
condenser. One evaporator is installed at the right side of the cockpit
partition and another is installed in the cabin back side.
The evaporators are responsible for renewing the air inside the
airplane. Therefore, their fans operate as recirculation fans providing
airflow and uniform temperatures throughout the cockpit and cabin.

Air Management System

VENTILATION GASPER
The gasper air distribution system provides air to each pilot and
passenger position. Air flowing from the TMV manifold supplies the
distribution ducts. When the gasper valve is open, air from the cockpit
bleed line (right side) supplies the pilot’s gasper system while the air
from the cabin bleed line (left side) supplies the passenger’s gasper
system.

EMERGENCY RAM AIR VENTILATION

The emergency ram air ventilation consists of a ventilation flap valve
installed in emergency ventilation duct connecting it to the ram air
duct. The emergency ram air ventilation valve is normally closed and
is commanded open when the BLEED knob is positioned to OFF
VENT (both PRSOV’s closed) in flight.

Air Management System

PRESSURIZATION SYSTEM
The Cabin Pressure Control System (CPCS) controls cabin
pressurization and provides maximum safety and comfort during every
segment of flight and ground operations.
The CPCS operates in automatic and manual modes. Normal
operation of CPCS is automatic.
The system consists of:
• Electronic Control and Monitoring Unit (ECMU);
• One cabin outflow valve (OFV);
• One negative relief valve (NRV);
• One positive relief valve (PRV).

SYSTEM COMPONENTS

ELECTRONIC CONTROL AND MONITORING UNIT (ECMU)

The basic function of the controller is to control cabin pressure by
generating a command for the outflow valve to modulate airflow
through the valve from the pressurized airplane volume to the
surrounding environment.
The ECMU has two independent channels, one controlling the cabin
pressure automatically and the other monitoring the cabin pressure
and also providing a manual cabin pressure control through the
PRESSURIZATION panel. The manual channel has also a pressure
altitude limit function to guarantee that both automatic and manual
speed commands do not drive the cabin pressure to unsafe
conditions.

OUTFLOW VALVE (OFV)

The outflow valve modulates airflow from the pressurized cabin to
surrounding environment. It can be modulated automatically or
manually.

Air Management System

NEGATIVE AND POSITIVE RELIEF VALVE (NRV/PRV)

The Negative Relief Valve (NRV) and the Positive Relief Valve (PRV)
are mechanically actuated valves and stay closed during normal
operations.
They will only open if the differential pressure limits are reached in
order to prevent over and under pressurization of the fuselage.

OPERATING MODES

AUTOMATIC CONTROL
The CPCS performs automatic control of the cabin pressure to ensure
fuselage safety and occupant safety and comfort. The CPCS utilizes
the ECMU and OFV as well as its airplane interface to perform the
automatic control function.
In the automatic control mode, cabin air exhaust is controlled during
airplane ground, takeoff, climb, descent, and taxi operations without
dedicated flight crew inputs. Only the LFE input is required from the
pilots prior to departure. If the FMS is used, the LFE is automatically
provided to CPCS. If not, the crew must input LFE through the MFD.
The CPCS receives all required information inputs via the integrated
avionics system.

NOTE: During MFD reversionary mode, it is not possible to change

the planned LFE. If a change is required, the manual
pressurization setting must be used.
Automatic cabin pressure control is considered “normal” airplane
operation. The automatic control function is overridden by the positive
pressure relief, negative pressure relief, altitude limit, manual, and
dump functions whenever required.

MANUAL CONTROL
The manual function occurs when the pilot sets the MODE switch, on
the PRESSURIZATION panel, to the MAN position.
When the MODE switch is set to the MAN position, the ECMU is
prepared to receive either an “open” or “close” command from the
CABIN ALT switch on the PRESSURIZATION panel. When the pilot
selects either the UP or DN setting, the OFV will open or close
accordingly. As the OFV opens or closes, the cabin is depressurized
or re-pressurized in response.
Manual control is considered “abnormal” operation, and is to be used
only after a loss of the automatic control system. The manual control
function overrides automatic control.
