DISCUSSION

a. Discuss the relationship between the length of the span, L and the
deflection, ∆
 The deflection from the graph is 1.687 when the length of span is
950mm.
 The deflection from the graph is 1.342 when the length of span is
850mm.
 The deflection from the graph is 0.987 when the length of span is
750mm.
 The deflection increase linearly due to the length of span.
b. Comment your experimental results . Explain irregularities/inaccruracy
in the results produced against the theory.
According to Raymond Aurelius Higgins (1994) there is a great different in
values of elastic modulus, which shows that there are some failures in the
experiment and those failures needed to discussed in order to get accurate
values for elastic modulus.
Failure in beam experiments could be two factors of apparatus failure, and
human error could be the second. Instrument error involves incorrect dial
gage, apparatus which is not already deformed on horizontal surface or
beam. A personal mistake includes measuring and calculating with the
wrong process, or lacking experimental experience.
Failure in apparatus also known as instrument failure can be identified
easily by running a certain experiment over and over again if all
experiments display incorrect value means devices have several errors. It
can be avoided by having a good quality appliance calibrated. Personal
error can be detected by conducting the experiment with a different person
with experience and can be avoided by practice.
c. What is the difference between the value of Young’s Modulus obtained
in the experiment compared to value for steels ( 200-210 GPa ).
The value of Young’s Modulus in this experiment is 7.867 N /mm2
meanwhile the Young’s Modulus of steel is 2 x 105 MPa
M. F. Ashby (2010) said that the greater the value of the elastic modulus
stiffer the material is and the lower value of the elastic modulus means that
the material deflects a great deal at small stresses.
