BEST PRACTICES FOR
ONLINE LEARNING

If this is the first time

you have experienced
an online course, or
a blended learning
experience, there may be
some differences in how
you will learn the content
of the course.
The following is a list of suggestions to
help you make the best use of your time
and effort. If you have done online courses
in the past, but have not particularly
gained new knowledge, we hope you will
consider these suggestions to help you get
the most out of this experience.

BEST PRACTICES FOR ONLINE LEARNING 2

TIP 1
Remove distractions and
commit 25–minute chunks of
time to learn the content
of the lesson.
Sometimes, we have learned bad habits when it
comes to taking online classes. For example, trying
to multi-task when learning new content is not
effective.

TIP 2
Each concept taught in the
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention®
course is designed to be
studied in an interwoven
sequence.
Do not skip around in the course. You are
encouraged to go back to revisit a concept or
practice a skill.

BEST PRACTICES FOR ONLINE LEARNING 3

TIP 3
Reward yourself with
something like a short walk,
play with a pet, or listen to
relaxing music after your 25
minutes of concentrated
learning.

TIP 4
While learning the content,
participate in each activity
and consider how the content
is relevant to you in your
position.
Write notes in the Learner’s Guide that you
can download from the introduction to the
online course.

TIP 5
Think about the content
of the lesson just before
taking a nap or going to
sleep for the night.
Sleeping will help the brain to commit the
content to long-term memory.

TIP 6
Practice what you learn.
All of the concepts you are learning in the
online portion will be put to use in the
classroom portion where you will practice
and build your skills. You will get more
from the classroom practice session when
you are knowledgeable of the concepts
and have prepared your mind to apply the
learning to your practice.

TIP 7
We associate things
we learn with specific
conditions around us.
For example, you may remember where you
were when you learned something such as
the multiplication table or the letters of the
alphabet. You may have detailed memories
of sights and smells around the room when
you learned this. In the same way, you can
recall information learned in an online course
when you associate the learning with specific
conditions around you at the time you
learned it.
