Unit 9 Final Project

Life is a journey. Many people face hardships, difficult situations, negative thoughts and

sometimes getting through those times can seem impossible. Dealing with these hardships can

often effect our mind-body-spiritual health which can also cause harm to our physical and mental

health. When you have spirituality, even when life seems to throw curveball after curveball at

you, you learn how to handle it with faith, hope, and love. Having a psychological and spiritual

inventory can often teach us to look at our spiritual growth and can help gain a greater

perspective on how to deal with life even with its ups and downs. We learn to love, to forgive, to

hope, and to have faith and trust in a greater power, or in my case, God, to get me through

anything, because I know that I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. For this

final project, I decided to interview my boyfriend, because although I spend a majority of time

with him, I never really questioned his spiritual growth or spirituality in general. I know he’s a

Christian, so I tried basing my interview questions around Christianity.

My Interview Questions

1. Do you have a background in religion? If so, what was it like?

I think this is an important question to ask because as people grow older sometimes their

spirituality can change from when they were a young kid. I know many people who have

grown up a Christian and then something happened and they became an atheist. So, finding

out the background of someone’s spirituality can really help them to identify any chances

that they encountered over the years.

2. How important is spirituality to your life now?

UNIT 9 FINAL PROJECT 3

This question was something that I was interested in finding out because many people tend to

rely on themselves or rely on other people for their well-being or happiness and they tend to

put other priorities above their spirituality and they don’t realize the importance of their

spiritual transformation. “Spiritual transformation is fueled by a growing awareness of the

reality of the soul. There is a conscious commitment to a life of self-discipline and active

service in the world. Spiritual disciplines such as meditation, study and service become

habits of daily living” (Blair, 2017).

3. important for you to get your life right with Him?

I believe it is important to live life in a spiritual way and many Christians know how easy it

is to sin and follow temptations, so asking this question really puts into perspective how we

are living our lives. It makes me curious to see how other people view this question.

4. Are you able to look back on your past, without it ruling your present?

Living in the present is something I have learned in my spiritual growth journey. I think

asking this question is important because it is so common for people to stay hooked on things

that have already happened and there’s nothing you can do about something that already

happened. Living in the present is something we should all work on.

5. What in your faith experience gives you strength, hope, and courage?

I think it is important to look at what gives people the motivation to get through every day.

There is no doubt that life can be hard and sometimes things and situations can feel

impossible to get through, so knowing what gives you strength to keep going really helps in

hard times.

6. What distresses you?

UNIT 9 FINAL PROJECT 4

“Spiritual distress most often occurs when a person is experiencing change, challenges,

physical and emotional pain, other symptoms, and losses associated with serious illness”

(Spiritual Distress, n.d.). I think it is important to ask this question to help people better

understand how to handle the stressors in life. Spirituality can provide comfort, and a sense

of peace in times of distress.

7. What does your spiritual growth have to do with how you integrate your faith and

profession?

Spirituality is important to many people when it comes to their professional life. “Workplace

spirituality includes many aspects like meaningful work, sense of community, and

organizational value. Workplace spirituality is intended to interconnect past experiences and

develop trust among employees in a way that would lead the organization into a better and

productive environment” (Hassan, 2016).

8. Do you ever feel like you’re not enough? How do you deal with those feelings?

I think this question is important to ask because this day in age, it seems as though many

people are dealing with some type of self-esteem problem, and they lack self-worth which

tends to cause a lot of harm to their mind-body-spirit connection. I think it’s important to

realize when someone has a self-esteem problem and go about ways of fixing it.

9. How does spirituality help your fear of failure?

Many people have a fear of failure. Whether it’s failing at work or at home, having this fear

may hold people back from doing many great things in their life. Fear is caused by anxiety

and anxiety can have a hold on us if we allow it, so it is important to address this question so

people can learn to fight that fear.

10. What person has most encouraged you in your spiritual growth?
UNIT 9 FINAL PROJECT 5

Having people in your life who are supportive of your spiritual growth and journey are very

special people. I asked this question just out of curiosity because I think it is important to

have people supporting you every step of the way.

The Interview

1. Do you have a background in religion? If so, what was it like?

I do! I grew up a Christian but I also studied many religions. My parents never forced

Christianity on me, but I am very aware that God is my heavenly father and I believe in that full

heartedly.

2. How important is spirituality to your life now?

I don’t even know where I would be without spirituality. My faith gets me through life.

3. If God exists, would it be important for you to get your life right with Him?

Oh absolutely, I know I am not perfect by any means but if I do mess up, I know that if I ask

God for forgiveness, He loves me enough to forgive me and I learn to be better.

4. Am I able to look back on my past, without it ruling my present?

Living in the past is something that is easily done, I try my hardest to focus on the present

moment and not live in the past or the future.

5. What in your faith experience gives you strength, hope, and courage?

I think just knowing the fact that God loves me and is there for me and only wants what’s best

for me, really gives me hope and strength to get through anything.

6. What distresses you?

I try not to become easily stressed, but I think the world is very fast paced, always having a

deadline for something and sometimes it can cause stress, but I try to take things slow and not

get too overwhelmed.

UNIT 9 FINAL PROJECT 6

7. What does your spiritual growth have to do with how you integrate your faith and

profession?

Having my faith when it comes to my profession is extremely important. Working in customer

service can be extremely difficult which sometimes results in a lack of patience, and I go to God

for anything that I lack and ask Him to help me.

8. Do you ever feel like you’re not enough? How do you deal with those feelings?

I think my spirituality really comes into play when I start doubting my confidence. If I ever get

those feelings of not being enough, I always remember that God created me in His image and it

would be wrong of me to criticize myself.

9. How does spirituality help your fear of failure?

I know that I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength, so fear of failure can

sometimes result in lack of faith in God. I do the best that I can and if I do fail, then I know it’s

okay because God knows that I tried my hardest. God doesn’t ask us to be perfect, he asks us to

do things the best way we can.

10. What person has most encouraged you in your spiritual growth?

Definitely my dad. He has been a pastor for most of my life and he always encourages me to

have faith and trust in God.

Conclusion

I think this interview went very well and no additions would have been necessary. The

questions allowed him to really think about where he stands in his faith and spirituality and he

mentioned to me that he is excited for the growth that he has made with his spiritual journey. My

interview was mainly based towards Christianity, but I know that in the future, if I were to create

another spiritual and psychological inventory, then the questions will be geared more towards all

religions and beliefs.
