Addition word problems.

Must

The children in Year 3 and Year 4 are taking part in a school play.

1) On Wednesday, 68 tickets had been sold in advance, but then 200 people arrived to buy tickets in the
evening. How many people watched the play?

2) Year 4 always make the drinks to sell. They have prepared 150 cups of orange juice and 72 cups of apple
juice. How many drinks have they made?

3) On Thursday, there were 224 seats put out for the play. They needed to put out another 103 seats to ensure
everyone got a seat. How many people went to the play?

4) On Monday, 4211 tickets were sold. On Tuesday, they sold another 530 tickets. How many tickets were sold
altogether?

5) There were cookies for sale on Saturday evening. The stall started with 435 cookies. Then, the PTA brought
another 124 more. How many cookies were for sale?

6) 170 mothers came to see the play and 171 fathers. How many parents in total were at the play on Saturday?

7) Popcorn is always a popular treat. Year 3 ate 200 bags and Year 4 ate 35 more bags than Year 3. How many
bags did Year 4 eat?

8) In the week before the play, the children spent 120 minutes rehearsing on Monday and 156 minutes
rehearsing on Tuesday. How many minutes did they spend rehearsing? 120 +156 =276

9) The first part of the play lasted 34 minutes. The second part of the play went for 44 minutes. How long was
the play? 34 +44 =78

10) 170 children in Year 1 and Year 2 came to see the dress rehearsal in the morning. 153 children in Year 5 and
Year 6 came to see the dress rehearsal in the afternoon. How many children watched the dress rehearsal in

2-step word problems.

2) The first part of the play lasted 63 minutes. The second part of the play was 6 minutes longer. How long was
the play in total?

3) 48 Cakes were sold on Thursday. 170 cakes were sold on Friday and 120 cakes were sold on Saturday. How
many cakes were sold in total?

4) On Monday, Year 4 sold 163 Tickets. On Tuesday, Year 5 sold 21 more tickets than Year 4. How many tickets
did they sell altogether?
5) Year 4 sold 137 bags of popcorn. Year 5 sold double that amount. How much did they sell in total?

6) The school sold 274 programmes on Thursday. 150 on Friday and 56 on Saturday. How many programmes
did they school sell in total?

7) After the play, Year 5 put away 340 seats. Year 4 put away 60 seats and the teachers put away 73 seats. How
many seats were put away in total?

8) In the week before the play, Year 4 rehearsed for 125 minutes on Monday. Year 5 rehearsed for 96 minutes
on Tuesday. On Wednesday the rehearsed together for 50 minutes. How many minutes did they spend
rehearsing in total?

9) The school made £90 on Tuesday. They made triple that on Wednesday. On Thursday they made £170. How
much money did the school make?

10) The teachers helped with preparation for the play. They spent 98 minutes decorating the hall, 260 minutes
getting the stage ready and 380 minutes making the costumes. How long did the preparations take?

Task 1

1) On Monday, Jacob spent 61 minutes on his maths. On Tuesday he spent 85 minutes on his Literacy and
on Wednesday he spent 133 minutes on his Integrated Studies project. How many minutes did he spend
on Homework this week?
Jacinta says that Jacob spent more time doing his school work on Wednesday than he did on Monday
and Tuesday combined. Is she right? How do you know?

2) A grocer has 119 apples in her store. On Monday she gets a delivery of 38 Golden Delicious apples. On
Tuesday she gets a delivery of 36 Pink Lady apples. On Wednesday she gets a delivery of 59 Granny
Smith. Finally, on Thursday, she gets 25 Braeburn apples.
How many apples does she have in total?
Which three days can you add together to get more than the original amount?

3) Seren got £8 for her birthday from her auntie. Her grandma gave her double the amount. Her uncle gave
her triple the amount. How much did Seren get?

Subtraction (word problems)

When solving word problems, you need to read the question carefully. Make sure you underline the key information
and then determine what the question is asking you to do. Show your working out and make sure you label your
sum.

1) On Monday, the swimming pool had 857 visitors. 433 swam in the morning. How many swam in the
evening?
2) Year 4s target is to swim 255 metres. Jack can swim 145 metres. How much further does he need to swim?

3) The leisure centre took £437 on Friday and £215 on Saturday. What was the difference between the two
days?

4) In two days, Oliver swam 296 metres. He swam 175 on Monday, so how many metres did he swim on
Tuesday?

5) The gift shop has 628 pairs of goggles. It sells 215. How many does it have left?

6) The shop sells both goggles and hats. In one day, it sold 538 goggles. It sold 127 fewer hats. How many hats
did it sell?

Multi-step Word Problems with Mixed Operations.

1) A bookshelf in the library holds 478 books. There are 122 on the top shelf. 132 books on the middle shelf.
How many books are on the bottom shelf? The librarian takes half of the books from the bottom shelf. How
many books are left?

2) There are 2,899 books in the children’s library. 1,343 are picture book. 775 books are chapter books. The
rest are information books. How many information books are there? The Librarian decides to add a teenage
section with a further 1001 books. How many books are there now?

3) There are 7,800 books in the library. On Monday, 133 were borrowed. On Tuesday 1,226 books were
borrowed. On Wednesday 530 books were returned. How many books are there in the library in the end?

4) Three classes of children visit the library. The first class took out 102 books. The second class took out 13
fewer. The third class took out 16 fewer books than the second class. How many books did the second and
