Speak Zambian Languages: Phrase Book in Bemba, Kaonde, Lozi, Luvale, Lunda, Nyanja,
and Tonga, all in one.
By
Vincent M. Chanda and Sitwe Benson Mkandawire

This book, which is a compilation of seven phrase books in the seven indigenous regional
languages of Zambia is a masterpiece as far as collective Zambian language documentation is
concerned. The text contain several phrases in English Language, which have been translated
into the seven regional languages. The text is meant to help local and international visitors to
learn some basic phrases as they travel to any of the ten provinces of Zambia. The text is also
important as it highlights on issues regarding the number of languages spoken in Zambia.

The seven Zambian regional languages included in this phrase book are among many
Zambian languages. They are just the major languages which have been granted the status of
regional semi-official languages. The exact number of Zambian languages is not known
although many texts claim that Zambia has 73 languages or 73 languages and dialects. The
figure 73 languages is probably due to a non-distinction between language and dialect using
the criterion of mutual intelligibility. If this criterion was used, the number of Zambian
languages would probably be about 20 or 30 only.
