WORKPLACE RISK ASSESSMENT

How to manage risks?

What is HAZARD ?

Identify the risk something with the potential to cause harm…

What is RISK ?
reflects both the likelihood (probability) that
harm will occur and its severity

Evaluate the risk RISK = Likelihood x Severity

Eliminate the risk

Substitute the risk Isolate the risk PPE

How to conduct the risk assessment?

to protect worker’s health and safety…

properties… and environment

1- Identify the risk

2- Evaluate the risk: likelihood and severity
3-Suggest appropriate control measures
(hierarchy of controls: prioritise the strategy &
activity)

1- Eliminate/substitute/isolate the risks

2- Engineering controls (technical)
3- Administrative controls
4- PPE (the last resort)
What is Hazard Identification?

• Questions that must be asked for each process in

chemical plant
1- What are the hazards? (Hazard Identification)
2- What can go wrong and how?
3- What are the chances? (Provide basic
information)
4- What are the consequences? for risk assessment)
Risk Assessment

The main aim of the risk assessment is

:
1- to protect workers’ health and
safety.

2- helps to minimize the possibility of

the environment being harmed due
to work-related activities.

5
Hazard – the potential for something to cause harm–
an intrinsic property…

Risk – the likelihood of that hazard to actually cause

harm…

Risk = likelihood of an X severity of

event outcome
(Probability)

6
Risk assessment is the process of:

a- Identifying the hazard & the Risk,

b- Analysing / evaluating the associated risk, the likelihood of
an injury or illness occurring, and its severity
c- Determining appropriate ways to eliminate or control the
hazard & the Risk

7
Risk Assessment
Risk assessment helps to….

1-Determine if existing control measures are adequate

or if more should be done

2-Prevent injuries or illnesses when done at the

design or planning stage

3-Prioritize hazards and control measures

8
a- Assessments should be done by a competent team of individuals
who have a good working knowledge of the workplace.

b- Include staff, supervisors & workers who work with the process
under review as they are the most familiar with the operation.

c- Include both people familiar with the work area, as well as

people who are not – in this way you have both the
"experienced" and "fresh" eye to conduct the inspection.
