Introduction
•Something valuable inherited from our past
•Heritage involved natural, cultural as well as built heritage
•Heritage should be looked upon as assets rather than as liabilities
because they represent the history of communities, embodying their
tradition, heritage and culture through architecture and the urban
form.
•GIS creates digital image of the heritage tourism sites

24-Mar-17 Meera Patel (150420748012) 3

those places can lead to lack
of appreciation of heritage
among the society.

significance of heritage as a
result of accepting
modernization which needs to
be highlighted through GIS
platform.

24-Mar-17 Meera Patel (150420748012) 4

Justification of study
•Heritage is a wide-ranging concept which increase city value
•Challenges for planners – The promotion, enlightenment, and
presentation of heritage and cultural diversity .
•Historical geography of Surat is fortunate, emerged on the map of
world trading during a period of Sultanate, Mughal, British and even
till today.
•Surat has evidential historical and cultural aspects and therefore to
promote them it is under the purview of an urban planner.

Study area: Anambra state of Nigeria

Tourism attractions: Natural, historic, man-made, cultural
Methodology adopted

Data Data Development of database

collection acquisition • Create base map by tracing sites
• Spatial • Primary and road through Google Earth
• Attribute • Secondary • Convert in layers through
importing into ArcGIS
• Create shape file of locations

Challenges: Human Resources, Non acceptance, Poor Public awareness

Results,
–Use of GIS in tourism is recommended due to its easiness and fastness
nature and accuracy
–Dynamic capability of GIS tools to incorporate changes that occur over
time to its database
