2. (a) Determine the value of the constant k in the equation 2 x 4 +k x 3−11 x 2+ 4 x +12
if 60 is the remainder when the equation is divided by x−3.

(b) Given that f ( x )=10 x , g ( x )=x +3. Find fg( x ) and ( fg )−1 ( x ) . Hence verify that

b=fg (a) then ( fg )−1 ( b )=a .

3. A special diet for laboratory animals is to contain at least 480 units of vitamins, 110 units
of minerals and 560 units of calories. There are two mixtures of the diet available,
mixture A and mixture B. 1 gram of mixture A contains 8 units of vitamins, 1 unit of
minerals and 4 units of calories. 1 gram of mixture B contains 3 units of vitamins, 1 unit
of minerals and 7 units of calories. Mixture A costs 40/= per gram, while mixture B costs
60/= per gram.
a) How many grams of each mixture should be used to satisfy the requirement of
each diet at a minimum cost?
b) What is the cost of the cheapest diet?
