Project Title: Being Black and “Talking White” in Higher Education under “Talking College:
Increasing Diversity in the Linguistic Sciences through Research on Language and Society
Mobility”
Findings: The overall social experiences of students attending both Historically Black
Colleges/Universities (HBCUs) and Predominately White Institutions (PWIs) have been affected by
the accusation of “talking/acting White”.
• Performed thorough literature review that examined the history of “talking/acting White” in
higher education and how these terms were defined and expressed throughout literature and
within the African-American community
• Assisted in the development of interview questionnaires and survey questions for African-
American students attending postsecondary institutions
• Screened and recruited subjects for both research studies
• Interviewed participants for both independent research and the Talking College Project
• Performed data analysis using hand transcription, indexing and coding methods.
• Collected and analyzed audio samples using Audacity®.
• Delivered research findings at the Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium at UC-

oropharyngeal cancers
• Created and developed the Human Subject Research (HSR) protocol (IRB approval not
required)
• Developed a series of qualitative survey questions utilized during interviews with healthcare
professionals in the medical setting
• Screened and recruited subjects for the research study
• Performed data analysis using GraphPad Prism® 7 to determine study results and prepare
presentation

Research Advisor: Deana Lacy McQuitty, Ph.D. CCC-SLP, Speech-Language Pathology &
Audiology
Project Title: Examining the Relationship Between Classroom Teacher’s Cultural Competence and
Special Education Referrals for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students
Findings: There is an increase in special education referrals for students of minority populations in
North Carolina when compared to the national average of referrals for minority students in the
public-school setting.
• Conducted a literature review under Dr. Deana McQuitty that examined the state of North
Carolina’s special education referrals for students of minority populations in comparison to
the national average of special education referrals for minority students in the public-school
setting.
• Determined that cultural and systematic biases from national standardized examinations and
the lack of diverse educators in the North Carolina public-school system was the primary
cause for the influx of unnecessary special education referrals for minority students.
• Displayed a strong work ethic and commitment to confidentiality when reading diversity
reports of other public-schools across the state of North Carolina and the United States
Department of Education national statistics.
• Supported the necessary operations needed to maintain a functioning research office by
assisting other partners with their current projects while learning the aspects of conducting
scientific research professionally.
