solution to the problem
PRODUCT 1

Strengths: This product is similar to what my client

wants, it is a ferris wheel made out of wood that is trendy
and I could make something like this but use sustainable
material. I could make a similar ferris wheel with wood
instead of cardboard.
PRODUCT 2

Strengths: this ferris wheel is really pretty and looks very real, and is a lot
similar to my product.

Weakness: The ferris wheel is not made of sustainable material but I want
to use something like this for my client so instead I would make a ferris
wheel made from sustainable material.
PRODUCT 3

Strengths: This is a toy model of a ferris wheel. This ferris wheel

looks really good and attractive. I could make a similar ferris
wheel in the colour scheme of my clients choice.

Weakness: The colour schemes are not similar to what my client

asked for and they have made it from plastic whereas my client
has told me to make it from wood.
PRODUCT 4

Strengths: This is a very simple ferris wheel yet is quite

attractive, it is completely sustainable.

Weakness: This has been made with ice cream sticks,

they are sustainable but do not last that long.

Design 1
Scored well against the success criteria. The design looks quite clean and aesthetic and is small enough to fit on my client’s and most
people’s desks. It also utilises environmental friendly materials as its main material. Also, the product has rounded edges and corners,
thus ensuring safety.

The look is original and I really like it. It looks like it actually belongs on a desk. The sections provide will enough
for anyone so thats a good thing.I recommend that you include a stand so the device will not pivot on the desk. This
is a much more complex design and I would actually prefer having it as a functional design element on my desk.

The section placement is better and the overall look is better but I still think that it would look out of place on a

corners, thus ensuring safety.
This is much better from the third design.
Design 3
Scored second best against the success criteria and manages to hit criteria that make it an all rounded design. The design has a form with
rounded edges and corners which adds to the safety factor. The design falls back on the size factor, rated by most people as adequately
space consuming, but not totally comfortable to be on client’s desk.

From what I understand from the design situation aesthetics is a major factor to be kept in mind for all of your
designs. I would personally not prefer this shape to be atop my desk all day. Aesthetically, this design is lacking and
as mentioned, would be out of place.
Design 4
Scores second poorest against the design criteria mainly because of its large size form factor. This design is an overall good design with
rounded edges and corners, and cylindrical-pill-like shape. However, the peer and client feedback indicate that the design would take too
much space on a desk. This leads to the design having a negative marking due its large form factor. Also, the respondents don’t feel that
this design is very aesthetic, thus scoring low on aesthetics

Strand 3 - Present and justify the final chosen design
According to the assessment summary, the last choice to go with is design 4.
The second-last option to go with is design 3 which scores more than design 4, However, not with a greater margin, not to mention that
it is my peer’s last choice.
The second-best choice for design is design 1 because it is my peer’s number 1 choice.
Therefore, the final design which I will be working on is clear – design 2. This is because design 2 scores the best according to all the
design specifications, design comparison, but is my peer’s second choice. Design 2 is also my client’s choice for the product’s design.
All designs score high and same in terms of controls, colours, minimalism and blending, design 2 takes the upper edge over all in terms
of its high aesthetic and very compact form. Being the best match for my design specifications and my client’s choice makes the design
my final choice.
The form and structure of this design is along the lines of the statement of inquiry. The form of this design is simple and consists of only
8 sections. This is indicative that product is easy to use and has simple function controls. The rounded body and form also helps with
safety factor since there are no round corners or edges, making it look aesthetic as well. The production will contain 8 sections which
will be enough for my client and also a clock to keep track of time while studying – making the product effective in terms of fulfilling
its purpose.

CRITERION D
Strand 1- Design detailed and relevant testing methods to measure
the success of the solution
Testing Method Description

Device Testing I will be testing my product for myself. I will be using all of its features and putting the device into general, normal tests like keeping
stationary in the sections and see if it able to take the weight or not and i will also write a product description that consists of all the
specifications an average consumer would like to read and make sense out of.

Client Feedback I will be providing my client with the product and let her use it for a working day at her workspace, so that she can provide me with
feedback. The client will also be provided with a detailed feedback form. The main idea of this testing method is to see if the product has
been able to increase the productivity of my client or not.
This testing method will also assess how successful has my product been in meeting my client’s expectations and requirements i.e. her
specifications. This consists of assessing the aesthetics, form, size, functionality, effectiveness and performance of the product.

User trial - questionnaire In this method, I will be allowing my peers to use my product in our school environment. Here I want to take the feedback of a range of
different people to assess design aspects like size, functionality, and aesthetics. Since I cannot provide my peers with my product to be
taken to their homes for testing, I will be running a mass assessment by running it in our self-study lessons at school.
The motive of this test is not to collect data focused on the effectiveness of the product since the design specifications in the product are of
my client’s choice and not my peers’. Nonetheless, I will ask my peers for their feedback on the effectiveness of the product as well. This
assessment will be carried out by a Google Form.
Product Comparison I will be comparing my client-specific product to a commercial-grade product which intends to achieve the same purpose as my product.
I will make direct comparison of my product with the commercial product,
This testing method does not directly relate to any of my design specifications since my product is very client specific in terms of
aesthetics, size, functionality, and other design aspects. Nonetheless, this testing method will help me understand how my product will do
commercially and what are some features that might have an edge on the market over my product.
Device Testing

To test the functioning of the device, I used the product as a normal user. I kept different types of stationary in the sections
to see if it is able to take the weight. To test the size of the device, I placed the device on my desk at home, another desk at
school where I was working, and carried it around with me in my backpack. I measured the dimensions of the finished
product. I also checked the time in the clock by matching it with the time in my laptop and my phone. The weight was
measured using the weighing scale. The data collected was impressive, and is as follows;
The device consists of 8 sections to keep the stationary and it also consists of a clock which has been tested and shows the
right time according to my laptop and phone.
Made out of wood with touches of black and silver,, the device weighs 250 grams. The product becomes an easy addition
to the user’s desk without requiring too much space.
For safety, all the edges have been rounded so that the client is not hurt in any way.
Client Feedback
Client feedback is one of the most direct ways to know if my product has succeeded in solving the problem it was meant
to solve. I made a questionnaire with a range of different questions about most design aspects which a user of the product
would care about. These aspects included aesthetics, form, size, functionality, materials, and effectivity & satisfaction as
a bonus. The success of these aspects was measured in both qualitative ways (descriptions, adjectives) and quantitative
ways (ratings). My client was highly satisfied with the size of the product and believes it would be perfect for her desk.

● The aesthetics of the product were highly appreciated as well (10/10), especially the simple colour scheme and
finish.
● My product blends in with my client’s office space
● My client believes that the number of sections provided are perfect as before this her desk was not as organized as
it is after keeping all her stuff in the ferris wheel.
● She has labeled all the 8 sections for different types of stationary like pens, highlighters, geometry stuff etc.
User trial - questionnaire

Similar to the client feedback, I used Google forms for this testing method as well. By having my peers use and
observe my product, people whom this product was not intended for, I can get to know how the product looks and
functions generally, how would a general user like it. This way I could get to know of possible improvements to make
or strengths of my product. These questions were more general and related to very simple design aspects like
aesthetics, form and functionality. From the feedback given on the form, I understood that;

● The aesthetics of the product were appreciated.

● The installed music/sounds did have a relaxing or de stressing effect on my peers, for almost all of them, one
was uncertain. Peers also suggested that I could add a different type or design of clock.
● The device was easy to use.
● As students, they believe it is portable and can be carried around easily, it is well-weighted.
● As far as suggestions go, a different and vibrant colour scheme and different design of the clock.
Product Comparison

Here, I am comparing my product to ‘30212 Big Wheel’ by Artesania Latina. This was the product I took inspiration
from while the investigation stage of my designing process. This commercial-grade product intends to solve the same
problem as mine.
The manufacturers of the product are leaned more towards using this product during the study period of the students. This
comparison does not intend to test any specifications, but will surely give me points for improvements.

To summarise and conclude, the product, ‘30212 Big Wheel’ by Artesania Latina intends to serve the same purpose
as my product, to help the client keep their desks organized. The functionality of both the devices is more or less the
same where they have an edge over my product which is because they have more number of sections to keep the
stationary in – something I can take inspiration from and see as improvement points. The cost of it is however is very
high, especially in India, where my client is based. If we are looking at a solution in this country, my product will
have a clear edge over Artesania Latina. Even in the US, the cost of my product is about 27 USD while the Big
Wheel costs 49 USD which gives me an edge over it. Furthermore, I believe that I have done a good job at making
use of natural or eco-friendly materials which makes my product better in some minor aspects too.

As indicated by the product’s score against the design specification and taking the client feedback form in consideration, I believe that my
product has been highly successful against all specifications and has achieved, with excellence, the label of an effective and satisfactory
product as said by my client. However, there are areas which I could have worked upon better or improvements that can be incorporated which
will help my product not only match the specification but exceed the current definition of ‘successful’, as a product.
Strand 3- Explain how the solution could be improved.
Strengths

● Aesthetics, Size and Form – Aesthetics is one of the major strengths of the product. The product has a very compact and portable size
which makes it easy to carry around or set on a desk while working. Wood as a material really makes the product stands out since it is a
very naturally and abundant material which is not used enough in the technology industry. The choice of colour pallet for the product and
type of wood chosen allow my product to blend in with my client’s environment and not cause any distractions.
● Functionality – The clock used in the product is very pretty so it looks really good on the client’s desk.
● Ease of use – The simple controls of the device also help with the simple functionality. They are simple so they are there to control the
device but do not become a distracting aspect or something that requires visual and cognitive attention. The product can also be turned
around easily.

Weakness Improvements

● The weight of my product is a little less. ● That will done once the client starts using the product, because
when she starts to keep stuff in the ferris wheel then the weight
will increase automatically.
● That cannot be changed now as the product is already made but
● The product is a little too big to keep on the desk.
we can ask the client to keep some of her stuff somewhere else
so that space for the product is made.
Strand 4- Explain the impact of the solution on the client.
The problem shared at the beginning of this design unit consisted of improving a person’s productivity. Upon
brainstorming and research, we figured that simply put, we have to boost the productivity of a client/target audience by
creating a creative product. A student of the school I attend was my client.
My client had a problem with organizing her work space. To solve her problem, I decided to make a product that will
help my client to organize her work space. The product, as mentioned by my client, also had to blend with her
workspace, use natural materials and should be easy to use.
Through research and interviews, I found that a ferris wheel would be a nice design for a stationary box.I mainly made
use of wood. To create the body, I first came up with a digital design and then slowly began to convert it into a real
product. Designing the product was done using various means such as hand-drawn sketches, using wood cutting tools
and lasik machine to cut the wood into the shape of a circle. I made sure that my design specification, according to
which all the design aspects of my product were designed such as aesthetics, form, size, et cetera, were detailed enough
so that I could follow it to create a product that solves my client’s problem. To my humble surprise, my product matched
all of the design specifications, but there was room for improvement. The size of the product could have been a little
smaller and the weight of the product could have been a little bit more. As 250g is very light for a stationary keeper as it
may fall if it has too much weight on it, and I could have worked more efficiently to reduce minor errors in the final
product.
My product was highly appraised by my client and it received excellent remarks as observed in the client feedback. My
client approved and was impressed by the design of the product. As mentioned, my design was able to meet all design
specifications, and the requirements mentioned by my client. It also met the original design brief which I synthesized in
the beginning of the project. However, one of the places I can work on is the quality of the product. Even though the
product is one of my best works, the materials used could have been better and small manufacturing errors could have
been avoided. The clock used in the product was not of a very high quality. My client mentioned that she would be
ready to cover the manufacturing cost of this product and a future, improved version if I go on to create one. In a future
version, I will make sure I use better materials for the body of the product.
The original goal of my product was to help the client organize her desk. Through my personal interaction with her and
client feedback form, my client mentioned that the impact of my product on her was very effective. The product was
easy to use and was able to help my client. The aesthetics of the product were also highly appreciated since the product
blended extremely well with her work space, and was minimalistic – which is also a practice in Feng Shui – a concept
my client strongly believes in. This can be observed with her strong rating of 10/10 in both the effectivity and
satisfaction with the product. Not to mention, the product did not have any negative effects on my client.
To conclude, I believe I have been able to create a successful, effective, and satisfactory product which boosts the
productivity of my client. I believe I have also done justice to the Global Context, Key Concept, Related Concept, and
Statement of Inquiry by working systematically to make a well-functioning device which brings fairness to my client’s
work life and in turn drives her development as an individual.
