CONTEXTUAL EXPLANATION

CONCERN
Cost Depending on the type learning environment being organized, there can
be many costs associated with an outdoor education program. It is
important to funding and current resources available. Many outdoor
programs can require student seating, learning manipulatives, teacher
training and other classroom furniture.
Safety There are some safety risks that should be eliminated before students
participate in an outdoor classroom. This can include making sure there
is no toxic or dangerous litter in the area, the learning area is supervised,
closed off to public access etc. Teachers and other school staff will have
to be extra diligent in ensuring student safety.
Location The location should involve a safe space that can be easily accessed by
staff and students. This will also help lower safety risks. Ideally, a
location with privacy and some sound barrier would help create a great
learning environment.

The climate of your location also needs to be taken into consideration
when planning outdoor learning and collaboration requirements. This
may involve students needing to bring warmer clothing, being prepared
for wind, rain, snow etc.

This includes planning activities with minimal paper or technology

involvement so that students can still be outside and be engaged with
their learning.
Health Student and staff allergies can be a concern for certain times of year and
needs to be considered with implementation of a program.
Collaborative A lack in understanding of the value of collaboration within the school
Culture community, may result in an unwillingness amongst staff to engage in
collaborative practice.

Members of the professional learning community must be willing to

form relationships with one another, in order to build trust and work
together towards a common goal.
Lack of Support Admin needs to be willing to provide proper support for staff and
from Admin students to encourage collaborative inquiry and the outdoor learning
program. Ways Admin can provide support include providing proper
teacher training, educating students and parents on outdoor programs,
working collaboratively with staff to create a strong outdoor program.
Lack of Resources A lack of resources, limited time, a lack of opportunities and an excess
number of responsibilities are potential barriers that may arise
preventing educators from collaborating.
