1. Introduction

In-Gate complex with ISPS check at APMT Rotterdam

Gate areas in maritime and train terminals are continuously in development.

Since 9/11 security became more then before part of the gate procedures. ISPS
requirements changed significantly the access procedures to and from the terminals.

Besides more access control, modern terminals try to accelerate the throughput time
in the gate area. Additionally they want to optimize the number of gate clerks.

When using self service kiosks the driver can stay in his cabin and by consequence
most gate clerks can be replaced by a reduced number of centralized operators.

That’s the application domain where Camco’s products are built for.

CAMCO Technologies page 3 15/5/2006

Specifications Pedestals
1.1. Concept
Camco’s self service kiosk line is a state of the art product. Besides the innovative
approach it has a contemporary modern design. The design concept is based on 2
detachable components and a sleek designed robust pedestal structure.

1.1.1 Pedestal structure

The pedestal structure, colored in traffic yellow, is

built in metal and powder coated. It’s simple and
robust.

The bull bars at both sides are meant for protection

of the equipment box and the LCD screen.
Additionally they can be used by the user needing a
grip while using the console.

At the back of the pedestal structure a metal plate

can be removed in order to access the cabling and
the bottom mounting bolds. There are no other
serviceable parts inside the structure.

1.2.2. Equipment box

This is the main unit; it is fixed to the structure at
the backside by 2 bearings. Two gas springs at the
back neutralizes the weight when turning the
equipment box down into the servicing position. The
equipment box is a framed housing, the bottom plate
is a tray that can be shifted out on 2 sliding gliders.
The front part of the tray (grey colored piece) is
modular; in function of the application from 2 up to 4
different appliances can be installed. The tray has
also a gas spring in order to neutralize the weight
when shifted out.

1.2.3 LCD Screen

An optional part is the 15” high bright LCD touch
screen. The screen adapts itself to the lighting
condition. For less demanding applications, the LCD
screen can be integrated into the equipment box.

CAMCO Technologies page 4 15/5/2006

Specifications Pedestals
1.2. Advantages
1.2.1 Modularity
The configuration of a kiosk in
maritime terminal applications is
far from standard. Every
terminal has its own
requirements, sometimes
driven by historical reasons or
sometimes because of legacy
reasons.
Having modular systems eases
the job as manufacture but
creates also interesting possibilities for the customer. A modular approach allows the
customer also to easily migrate in time to new solutions. The Camco kiosk line is
deliverable in 4 different heights: truck, car, person and truck/car combination. The
same for the equipment box and the supplied modules. All combinations have the
same physical front look, this creates a clean and professional design.

1.2.2 Maintenance

The truck edition front panel is positioned quite high

because the trucker’s cabin is positioned higher from
the ground then normal cars. This creates a problem
for servicing. Gate applications with printers or
badge swallow readers need frequent access to the
interior of the kiosk. Camco’s design makes such
maintenance an easy job. The equipment box can be
tilted downwards to an almost vertical position. In
the same movement the equipment tray slides out
downwards.

1.2.3 Serviceability
From the slide out position it is easy to change
paper-rolls or to empty the badge collector.

Even changing equipment is no issue; every

component is fully accessible from the top and the 2
sides.

With the same ease the complete equipment box

can be removed from the pedestal frame.

CAMCO Technologies page 5 15/5/2006

Specifications Pedestals
1.2.4. Customization

As this concept is completely Camco

owned, we can customize the kiosk
towards customer’s specifications.
Colors, layout and pictograms on the
front panels, height of the pedestal
can easily be customized.

1.3. Integration
1.3.1 Embedded CPU

Camco developed a low power

PXA270 embedded computer for
the kiosk application. This
system has lots of I/O’s for all
the attached equipment (RS232,
USB Hub, etc...).
By preference we run Linux on
this platform although it is
possible to use Windows CE as
well.

1.3.2 TOS Integration

Camco developed a GOS (Gate Operating System). The GOS handles all gate
procedures from the ISPS security check up to interchange area (where the
container/trailer is handed over from truck to the yard of vice versa). The GOS is a
server application; it interfaces on one side with the truck kiosks and on the other
side with the TOS (Terminal Operating System). The communication between GOS
and TOS is via one XML based interface. At this moment we have several TOS
interfaces.

Specifications Pedestals
1.4. Environment

1.4.1 Ease of use

The dialog box structures are designed and developed in such a way that it is very
easy for truck drivers to stop alongside the box and start working on it.
Al lot of the design and development work went into the ergonomically requirements.
Te experience of the truck drivers already using the dialog boxes at the APM
Terminal in Rotterdam is very positive.

CAMCO Technologies page 7 15/5/2006

Specifications Pedestals
1.4.2 Protection degree
Again, the design of the dialog box is made in such a way that it is difficult, not to
say almost impossible to hit the vital components directly.

At both sides of the dialog box structure, there is INOX 3156 ”bull bar” that protects
the component box significantly.

In some cases it can be interesting to add in front of the dialog box a concrete block
(jersey block) as an additional protection.

Specifications Pedestals
2. Technical Specifications
2.1 General specifications
Console designs for “indoor” exists from plenty suppliers, from assembled systems
on base of separate components (LCD panel, embedded industrial computer, ..) up
to full integrated Panel PC’s (IPC’s). Although several of those systems are IP65
compliant, it doesn’t mean they can be used outside.

Outside consoles have specific requirements:

ƒ Temperature extremes (-20 °C and higher then 40°C)

ƒ Extreme light conditions (from sunlight to complete dark)
ƒ Severe Weather (rain, snow, wind)
ƒ Limited Supervision (can't always see who's using the console)
ƒ Dirty and aggressive Environment (wind-blown dust, salty seawater, etc.)
ƒ Air humidity up to 80%

In order to address these concerns, console systems that are destined for use in
outdoor applications must be designed with the following considerations:

ƒ Display Brightness - since the outdoor units will be subject to direct

sunlight, the actual flat panel LCD must be brighter; at least 1400 cd/m2.
ƒ Auto-Dimming - just as the display has to be brighter during sunny days it
have to be auto-dimmed to lower brightness during cloudy days or at night.
ƒ Keyboard – Must be fully sealed against direct rain, dirty fingers (oil) and
salty water environment. Alternative is an LCD touch screen.
ƒ Temperature - the computer, display and other electronics must be designed
for outside, high- and low -temperature use. The internal temperatures
should be stabilized between 10°C and 50°C.
ƒ Printer – as most outdoor consoles are unattended the printer should have
the maximum options to avoid human intervention because of paper jam
problems.
ƒ Barcode/badge/biometric readers – Should be carefully selected when
use outside, particular biometric readers. Those are very environment
sensitive (Handscan more then other technologies)
ƒ Housing material - should be metal design with industrial powder coat
finish. Most indoor materials will not survive outdoors and will be subject to
cracking under sun load and varying conditions. Inox parts should be INOX
316 (highest quality)
ƒ Sealing - all connections, openings, doors, panels into the console must be
designed with watertight gasketing, latches and fittings. Otherwise, water will
get into the unit.

2.2. Kiosk Equipment

2.2.1. Card Readers

Camco’s kiosks supports all kind of readers, even a combination of different
technologies (Mifare with HID proximity for instance). We have a specific card
holder for applications requiring an immobilized card when writing (eg Mifare cards).

Touch Reader Holder reader Swallow

Models
• Touch reader
The “touch” model is able to read contactless cards from up to 5 cm distance.
The user should not touch the reader.

• Holder reader
The “Holder” model is needed when used in combination with a handscan
reader. A handscan reader writes back every time the new reading to the
Mifare card. This requires the Mifare card is immobilized during the writing
process.

• Swallow (retract) reader

Some application requires the recuperation of temporary terminal access
cards. The “Swallow reader” is used where trip card have to be recuperated
(Exit of the terminal). A small container can hold up to 100 collected cards.
Another use is to temporarily keep the card inside the reader until the user
has finished with certain handlings (for instance for security reasons).
The reader has a front shutter to prevent damage by violence.

Technology
Depending of the customer Mifare readers (read/write), Proximity readers (HID or
others), other RFID technology or a combination of both can be offered.

Specifications Pedestals
2.2.2. Printer
The printer is because of its mechanical construction the most delicate part and
should be selected carefully. As the consoles are unmanned and spread out in a large
area the mechanical quality should be primordial.
Sufficient space is allocated to allow the use large printer rolls.
Different models are supported, by preference Swecoin or Epson.

Thermal printing
Direct Thermal printing is the leading choice of printing
technology in outdoor consoles today since it is relatively
maintenance free and is well tested in un-manned
situations. The direct thermal printer is a type of printer
that applies heat directly to specially treated paper, labels
or tags to form the image or barcode.

Ink or toners
Direct thermal printers do not require additional
consumables such as toner or ink ribbon toner and thus
have less changeable parts, have a lower cost of long-term
ownership, and fit better into space critical applications.

Paper
The largest ongoing cost of printing receipts is the service calls for adding paper for
the printer. The only requirement is calculate the numbers of tickets to print a day to
evaluate the type roll that should be supported. Paper rolls can have a diameter up
to 250 mm, the length depends of the thickness of the paper.

Warm-up
Also, thermal printing technology provides for instant
printing on command. No warm-up time is required for
the first page or paper to print.

Presenter
The most important component in thermal printers is the
cutter and presenter. The presenter is a device that fits
in the front of the printer and allows it to print and cut
the entire document prior to delivery. This prevents
consumer contact with the printed page during the printing process and eliminates
the single largest problem occurrence of paper jams.

Rain cover
At seaside the rain can move horizontally. Therefore the printer module has a build-
in fan blowing air through the paper sleeve. This solution avoids water touching the
paper-end (wet paper gets bigger and get stuck in the printer).

Retractor
Also the model we implement has a retract unit that throws uncollected printouts in
a waste basket inside the console to avoid erroneous use of the receipt documents.

CAMCO Technologies page 11 15/5/2006

Specifications Pedestals
Sensors
Important for an unattended outdoor printer are the number and type of available
sensors. For instance a first and second near-end paperroll sensor.

Door shutter
To prevent people putting things into the printer a mechanical shutter close the
outlet of the printer when not in use.

Specifications Pedestals
2.2.3. Biometric Handscan reader

Some terminals use biometric hand scan readers. Camco has adapted the handscan
unit type ID3D-R to be used in an outside environment.

Although we currently offer the best hand

scan integration of the market, we have
to warn the customer that the biometric
readers we have to use (Interflex) are
not build to be used in an outside
environment. The used technology is
from beginning the years 90thies, most
problems arise from (1) sun light
reflecting on the bottom plate and shining
into the top sensor (2) water or condens
on the bottom plate. This gives
unexpected and unreliable results.

To ease the use of the handscan reader we exported the LED’s for feedback of the
position of the fingers to the frontpanel.

2.2.4. VoIP Intercom

Most kiosks are equipped with standard phone or PABX

based Intercom systems. In practice we encounter lot of
complaints about sound quality, stability and cable
problems. This is normal because those intercoms have
never been designed for an outside use in noisy
environments (truck engines). Therefore Camco decided to
develop a high-end intercom system specifically for gate
areas.

Typical problems are the echo sound. The sound from the
loudspeaker hits the side of the truck (only 0,5 meter
distance) and reflects back into the microphone.

Technical specifications:
• Camco designed VoIP SIP Intercom phone
• Beam forming small 2 microphone array, one micro picks up sound from
driver and a second picks up sound from the environment.
• The DSP processor calculates the difference between 2 micro’s and filter out
only the voice.
• DSP has acoustic echo cancellation up to 60db
• Noise suppression from 13 to 18db
• 120-3400Hz bandwidth, 12KHz sampling

CAMCO Technologies page 13 15/5/2006

Specifications Pedestals
• Far field pickup up to 5 meters
• Enhanced full duplex
• High power loudspeaker for (15 Watt)

• 2 Push buttons (Call and Panic)
• Camera module
• Allows paging and revers call (operator can setup a call)
• Music/preregistered voice on

Additional benefits
• The fact having a digital voice encoder allows interesting possibilities. At
several access points (for instance ARMG’s) a pre-recorded voice could help
the drivers to pay attention for certain things.
• Intercom connections can be re-routed on a flexible way to different
destinations. For instance operators can be dynamicly assigned certain kiosk-
lanes including the intercom calls.

VoIP Embedded SIP Server (Talkback)

This is an embedded VoIp SIP phone server. It is an Intel based Linux server
(flashdisk based) running a VoIP PBX software. The configuration of all the
Intercom phones is stored on this Server. This server can also be connected
to an existing PABX via ISDN or Ethernet.

VoIP Operator console

This is a software module that is integrated into the operator console. It gives
a visible feedback of the intercoms (call status) and allows the operator to
pick-up, answer of forward an intercom call.

POE switch
This is a POE switch or patchpanel + standard Ethernet switch specifically for
the Intercoms. The Intercoms get power from a separate power circuit via the
Ethernet CAT5 cabling.

Camera
The Intercom has the provision for a camera.

2.2.5 LCD touch screens

Description
Special attention has been given to the type
of LCD screen. There is a quite large offer of
panel LCD screens on the market however
when quality is taken in account only a few
met the needed specs.

Specifications:

• Display size 15”,10” and 6”

• Contrast ratio 400:1,
• Resolution 1024x768, VGA and ½ VGA
• Max brightness is 1600 cdm/m2 (Nits)

• External 15” touchscreen
This screen is proposed for kiosk where the trucker should be able to input
alphanumeric data (containernumber, bookingnumber,..)

• Internal 10” touchscreen (transflective)

This LCD screen ocupies 2 modules. It allows reduced input (touching
pictograms or numeric keyboard).

• Internal 6” LCD touchscreen (transflective)

This LCD screen occupies only one module, it is used baiscly to return
information or to guide the user via pictograms.

Touchscreen

It took Camco a while before we found a perfect solution. Most tested technologies
failed at the sea-side because of aggressive weather. Finally we achieve very good
results with projected capacitive touchscreen technology from Zytronic.

• Infrared beam based solution can not be used in this environment, raindrops
are seen as fingers.
• Immunity to damage – unsurpassed impact, vandal, and scratch resistance.
• External environments – unaffected by dirt, moisture and rain.
• Operating temperature – ranges from –35ºC to +65ºC. Sub zero operation
may be enhanced by an integrated heater panel.
• Resistance to contamination – unaffected by harsh cleaning fluids.
• Shielded filters can be specified.
• Supports both RS232 and USB.
• Embedded controller – further enhances reliability and life expectancy.
• Projected capacitive touchscreen technology (Zytronic)
