SECTION 08520

ALUMINUM WINDOWS

PART 1 – GENERAL

1.1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Work of this Section shall be governed by the Contract Documents. Provide


materials, labor, equipment and services necessary to furnish, deliver and install all
work of this Section as shown on the Drawings, as specified herein, and/or as
specified by job conditions.

1.2 SECTION INCLUDES

A. Extruded aluminum windows with fixed and operating sash; glass shop glazed,
including infill panels for guard house and interior offices at first floor of office
building.

B. Operating hardware and insect screens.

C. Perimeter sealant.

1.3 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

A. Windows: Tubular aluminum sections, shop fabrications, factory pre-finished, vision


glass, infill panels, related flashings, anchorage and attachment devices.

B. Configuration: Fixed non-operable and outward openings top hinged and horizontal
sliding.

C. Glazing: Exterior and Interior.

1.4 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. Design and size components to withstand dead and live loads caused by positive and
negative wind pressure acting normal to plane of wall as calculated in accordance
with Bangkok code.

B. Limit member deflection to 1/200 with full recovery of glazing materials.

C. System to accommodate, without damage to components or deterioration of seals,


movement between window and perimeter framing, deflection of lintel.

D. Limit air leakage through assembly to 0.35 cfm./min./sq. ft. 0.002 cu. M./s./sq. m. of
wall area, measured at a reference differential pressure across assembly of 1.57 psf.
75 pa. as measured in accordance wit ASTM E283.

E. Vapor Seal with Interior Atmospheric Pressure of 1 inch (25mm.) sq, 72 degrees F.
(22 degrees C.), 40 Percent RH: No. Failure.

F. Maintain continuous air and vapor barrier throughout assembly, primarily in line
with inside pane of glass inner sheet of infill panel and heel bead of glazing.

G. Drain water entering joints, condensation occurring on glazing channels, or migrating


moisture occurring with system, to the exterior by a weep drainage network.

1.5 SUBMITS

A. Shop Drawings: Indicate opening dimensions, framed opening tolerances, affected


related work; installation requirements.

B. Product Data: Provide component dimensions, anchorage and fasteners, glass,


internal drainage details.

C. Submit two samples illustrating window frame section and screen and frame.

D. Submit two samples of operating hardware.

E. Manufacturer’s Certificate: Certify that Products meet or exceed specified


requirements.

1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Perform Work in accordance with AAMA 101

1.7 QUALIFICATIONS

A. Manufacturer and installer: Company specializing in manufacturing commercial


aluminum windows with minimum three years experience.

1.8 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Deliver, store, protect and handle products to site.

B. Protect pre-finished aluminum surfaces with wrapping or strippable coating. Do not


use adhesive papers or sprayed coatings which bond when exposed to sunlight or
weather.

1.9 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Do not install when ambient temperature is less than 5 degrees C.

B. Maintain this minimum temperature during after installation of sealants.

1.10 FIELD MEASUREMENTS

A. Verify that field measurements are as indicated on shop drawings.

PART 2 – PRODUCT

2.1 ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURERS

A. Manufacturer: Subject to compliance with requirements provide window units by one


of the following:

0. Kawneer/Amax
0. PPG Industries
0. B. Grimm MBM Metal Works Ltd.
0. YHS International Ltd.
0. Peterson 1990 Co., Ltd
0. China Rebar co., Ltd
1. Equivalent approved by the Architect.

2.2 MATERIALS

A. Aluminum Extrusions: Alloy and temper recommended by window manufacturer for


strength, corrosion resistance, and application of required finish, but not less that
22,000 power per square inch ultimate tensile strength and not less than 0.062 inch
thickness at any location for main frame and sash members. Comply with ASTM B
221.

B. Fasteners: Aluminum, non-magnetic stainless steel, or other materials warranted by


manufacturer to be non-corrosive and compatible with aluminum members, trim,
hardware, anchors and other components for window units.

C. Reinforcement: Where fasteners screw-anchor into aluminum less than 0.125 inch
thick, reinforce interior with aluminum or non-magnetic stainless steel to receive
screw threads, or provide standard non-corrosive presses in splinted grommet nuts.

D. Anchors, Clips and Window Accessories: Depending on strength and corrosion-


inhibiting requirements, fabricate units of aluminum, non-magnetic stainless steel, or
hot-dip zinc coated steel or iron coated steel or iron complying with ASTM A 386.

E. Compression Glazing Strips and Weather –stripping: At manufacturer’s option,


provide mode neoprene gaskets complying with ASTM D 2,000 Designation
2BC415 To 3BC620, molde PVC Gaskets.

F. Complying with ASTM C 2287, or molded expanded neoprene gaskets.

G. Complying with ASTM C 509, Grad 4,

H. Sliding Weather-stripping: Provide woven pile weather-stripping of wool,


polypropylene or nylon pile and resin-impregnated backing fabric, and aluminum
backing strip; complying with AAMA 701.

I. Sealant: Unless otherwise indicated for sealants required within fabricated window
units, provide type recommended by window manufacturer for joint size and
movement, to remain permanently elastic, non-shrinking and non-migrating.

2.3 GLASS AND GLAZING MATERIALS

A. Glass and Glazing Materials: As specified in Section 08800.

2.4 HARDWARE

A. Operator: Lever action handle fitted to projecting sash arms with limit stops.

B. Projecting Sash Arms: Zinc plated steel, friction pivot joints with nylon bearings,
removable pivot clips for cleaning.

C. Pulls.

D. Sash lock: Lever handle with cam lock.

E. Threshold: Extruded aluminum, sloped to exterior.

F. Bottom Rollers: Stainless steel, adjustable.

G. Limit Stops: Resilient.

H. Insect Screen Frames: Rolled aluminum, of rectangular sections with mesh set into
frame and secured. Fit frames with adjustable roller hardware.

2.5 FABRICATION

A. Fabricate components with minimum clearances and spacing around perimeter of


assembly, yet enabling installation and dynamic movement of perimeter seal.

B. Accurately fit and secure joints and corners. Make joints flush, hairline, and
weatherproof.

C. Prepare components to receive anchor devices. Fabricate anchors.

D. Arrange fasteners and attachments to ensure concealment from view.

E. Prepare components with internal reinforcement for operating hardware.

F. Provide internal reinforcement in mullions with galvanized steel members to


maintain rigidity.

G. Permit internal drainage weep holes and channels to migrate to exterior. Provide
internal drainage of glazing spaces to exterior through weep holes.

H. Assemble insect screens of rolled aluminum rectangular tubular sections. Milter and
reinforced frame corners. Fit mesh taught in frame into frame secured. Fit frames
with four spring loaded steel pin retainers.

I. Double weather-strip operable units.

J. Shop glaze window units.

2.6 FINISHES

A. Finish coatings to conform to AAMA 603.8.

B. Exterior Exposed Aluminum surfaces: Two steps anodized to color selected by


architect, to 0.018mm, thickness.

C. Interior Exposed Aluminum Surfaces: Two steps anodized to color selected by


architect, to 0.018mm, thickness.

D. Operator: Enameled to color as selected.

E. Concealed Steel Items: Galvanized in accordance with ASTM A386 to 610


gm./sq.m.

F. Apply one coat bituminous paint to concealed aluminum surfaces in contract with
cementitious or dissimilar materials.

PART 3 – EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify sit operating conditions

B. Verify wall openings and adjoining air and vapor materials are ready to receive work
of this Section.

3.2 INSTALLATION

A. Install window frames, and hardware in accordance with manufacturer instructions.

B. Attach window frame and shims to perimeter opening to accommodate construction


tolerances and other irregularities.

C. Align window plumb and level, free of warp twist. Maintain dimensional tolerances,
aligning with adjacent work.

D. Install sill and sill end angles.

E. Coordinate attachment and seal of perimeter air and vapor barriers materials.

F. Install operating hardware.

G. Install glass and infill panels in accordance with Section 08800, to glazing method
required to achieve performance criteria.

H. Install perimeter sealant to method required to achieve performance criteria.

3.3 TOLERANCES

A. Maximum Variation from Level of Plumb: 1.5 mm/m. non-cumulative or 12


mm/30m. whichever is less.

3.4 ADJUSTING

A. Adjust operating sash and hardware to provide tight fit at contact points and at
weather-stripping, and to ensure smooth operation and weather-tight closure.

3.5 CLEANING

A. Remove protective material from pre-finished aluminum surfaces.

B. Wash down surfaces with a solution of mild detergent in warm water, applied with
soft, clean wiping cloths. Take care to remove dirt from corners. Wipe surfaces clean.

B. Remove excess sealant by moderate use of mineral spirits or other solvent acceptable
to sealant manufacturer.
