SECTION 083454 – BULLET RESISTANT STEEL DOORS AND FRAMES

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SECTION INCLUDES

1.4 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. Bullet Resistance: Conform to UL 752, Level 7.

1.5 SUBMITTALS

A. Submittal procedures and requirements shall comply with Division 01 Specification Sections.

B. Product Data: Provide product data on door construction and provided hardware.

C. Shop Drawings: Indicate door and frame elevations, internal reinforcement, anchor types, closure
methods, and location of cut-outs for hardware.

D. Test Data: Submit independent test data from a recognized licensed laboratory indicating compliance
with bullet resistant performance requirements.

E. Installation Instructions: Submit manufacturer's installation instructions.

1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Provide Products of this section from a single manufacturer unless components are referenced specifically
in other sections.

B. Pre-installation Meeting: Convene a pre-installation meeting 2 weeks before installation of bullet-


resistant door and frame assembly. Require attendance of relevant subcontractors, consultants, and
manufacturer’s representative. Review installation and coordination with other work.

C. Perform Work to requirements of HMMA (Hollow Metal Manufacturers Association) standards.

D. Manufacturer: Minimum 5 years documented experience manufacturing bullet-resistant door and frame
assemblies.

1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND PROTECTION

A. Deliver, storage and protection shall comply with Division 01 Specification Sections.

B. Comply with HMMA 840.

C. Weld minimum two temporary jamb spreaders per frame prior to shipment.

D. Remove doors and frames from wrappings or coverings upon receipt on site and inspect for damage.

E. Store in vertical position, spaced with blocking to permit air circulation between components.

F. Store materials out of water and covered to protect from damage.

G. Clean and touch up scratches or disfigurement caused by shipping or handling with zinc-rich primer.

1.8 WARRANTY

A. Manufacturer's Limited Warranty: Five (5) years from date of supply, covering material and
workmanship.

2.2 MATERIALS

A. Sheet Steel: Galvanized steel to ASTM A653/A653M, ZF75 minimum 1.5 mm.

B. Reinforcement Channel: same material as sheet steel.

2.3 ACCESSORIES

A. Section 087110 for additional hardware

B. Primer: Rust inhibitive zinc phosphate.

2.4 FABRICATION

A. Manufacture doors and frames to Level 7 bullet resistance rating in accordance with UL 752.

B. Steel Doors:
1. Sheet steel faces, thickness, design, and core suitable to achieve specified ballistic performance.
2. Laminated core construction, longitudinal edges mechanically inter-locked.
3. Drill and tap for mortised, templated hardware.
4. Top and Bottom Channels: Inverted, recessed, welded steel channels.
5. Weld hardware reinforcement plates in place.
6. Fabrication Tolerances: To HMMA 841.

C. Steel Frames:
1. Sheet steel, metal thickness and appropriate to maintain bullet resistant door and frame ratings,
mitered corners.
2. Factory assemble and weld frames.
3. Drill and tap for mortised, templated hardware.
4. Provide three single silencers for single doors on strike side.
5. Fabrication Tolerances: To HMMA 841.

D. Affix permanent metal nameplates to door and frame, indicating manufacturer's name, door tag, model
number, and ballistic rating.

2.5 FINISHES

A. Factory Finish: Factory applied zinc phosphate primer to be applied to all exposed surfaces.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION

A. Install components to manufacturer’s written instructions.

B. Install doors and frames to HMMA 840 standards.

C. Coordinate with masonry wall construction for anchor placement.

D. Set frames plumb, square, level and at correct elevation.

E. Allow for deflection to ensure that structural loads are not transmitted to frame.

F. Adjust operable parts for correct clearances and function.

G. Finish paint in accordance with Section 099000.

3.2 ERECTION TOLERANCES

A. Installation tolerances of installed frame for squareness, alignment, twist and plumbness are to be no
more then ± 1/16in (1.5mm) in compliance with HMMA 841.

3.3 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Provide qualified manufacturer's representative to instruct installers on the proper installation and
adjustment of door assemblies.

B. Provide manufacturer's representative to inspect door installation, and test minimum five (5) cycles of
operation. Correct any deficient doors and frames.
