1.1 Target Group

The target groups for these instructions are the personnel involved in the site
installation engineering process and those responsible for the installation,
integration, and maintenance of Radio Base Station (RBS) sites.

BBS 6301 Description

2 Product Overview

This section describes the main features and configurations of the BBS.

2.1 Main Features

In the event of AC failure, the BBS 6301 supplies 048 V DC to the RBS 6301
and its connected units, such as Remote Radio Units (RRU) and transmission
equipment.

To a large extent, the BBS 6301 uses the same basic cabinet hardware as
the RBS 6301. This means the same visual appearance at site, but also
similarity in for example cabinet handling and installation, vandal protection,
and quality. The compact design and low weight simplifies transport to the
site and installation. It can be installed either on the ground, on a wall, or a
pole using the available installation kits. The BBS front door is supplied with
Ericsson's standard locking system.

The cabinet meets the requirements for installation in Earthquake Zone 4 and is
approved for operation throughout the world.

Different types of battery blocks can be installed with capacity from 40 Ah to

100 Ah, see Section 3.1.1 on page 7. Two BBS cabinets can be connected to
each RBS to increase battery backup capacity.

The thermoelectric climate system ensures long battery life by keeping the
well-insulated battery compartment in the mid 20C temperature range. The
optional heater will ensure that the batteries can deliver proper capacity even in
very cold areas.

Function Description

3.1 Power
The BBS 6301 is an outdoor BBS designed for the RBS 6301 main-remote
system.

The battery blocks are charged with 048 V DC from the RBS. The climate unit
and the SCU are fed with power from the RBS by a separate cable.

The battery cables are connected to the PCU-DC and the climate unit and the
SCU power cable is connected to the SPD.

3.1.1 Approved Battery Types

For a list of approved battery types, battery dimensions, and battery weights,
refer to Spare Parts Catalog, Reference [7].

The battery capacity is doubled when an extension cabinet is used.

The battery blocks must be used with the battery accessory kit that is supplied
with the BBS cabinet, which includes front terminal adaptors, battery trays,
battery harness, and gas ventilation tubes.

BBS 6301 Description

3.2 Supervision and Control

The BBS is supervised by the SCU, which can report four external alarms to the
RBS and is equipped with climate control functions. The SCU has indicators
showing the BBS status.

Charge and control of the battery blocks are performed by the RBS 6301.

Remote site management of the RBS and BBS network is possible through the
Ericsson Operation and Support System (OSS).

3.2.1 Alarms

The SCU in the BBS issues the following alarms to the RBS as external alarms:

• Battery Circuit Breaker (CB), Fuse alarm

• Door switch alarm

• Climate fault alarm

• SCU fault alarm

The main BBS cabinet and the extension BBS cabinet are both connected to
the RBS by separate alarm cables.

See Section 6.1.5 on page 21 for information on alarm outputs.

3.2.2 Temperature Sensors

Two temperature sensors are used in the BBS: one battery temperature sensor
and one climate temperature sensor.

The battery temperature sensor, attached to one of the battery blocks in the
main cabinet, monitors the battery temperature for battery charging. The
battery temperature sensor cable is connected to the Battery Fuse Unit (BFU)
in the RBS.

The climate temperature sensor monitors the cabinet inner temperature and
forwards the information to the SCU, which controls the climate unit.

3.3 Climate System

The BBS is equipped with a climate unit designed to maintain the optimum
operating temperature for the batteries, regardless of the environment.

The well-insulated cabinet reduces the climate system power consumption.

8 14/1551-LZA 701 6009 Uen E | 2013-11-21

Function Description

The SCU supervises the climate system and regulates the temperature inside
the BBS using the active cooling unit and the optional heaters.

3.3.1 Active Cooling Unit

The BBS is equipped with a Thermo-Electric Cooler (TEC) to ensure maximum
battery life.

At power on, a self-check routine is performed on the TEC.

The TEC separates the interior climate from the exterior climate. It provides
the batteries with a room-temperature environment, which maximizes the
battery life.

Table 2 describes the performance of the TEC.

Table 2 TEC Cooling Performance

Performance Description
Cooling of batteries 25–30C in real climate scenarios
with peak ambient temperatures of
<50C, if repetitive deep discharging
of the batteries is avoided
The TEC starts to operate when the
battery temperature reaches +26C
and continues to operate until the
battery temperature is again below
+26C

The nominal ventilation airflow is 200 m³/h.

Minor inner temperature deviations may occur, depending on solar radiation

and the exact point of measurement inside the compartments.

3.3.2 Heaters (Optional)

The optional heater units are recommended if the BBS is installed in areas
where the average ambient temperature reaches below 0C for a substantial
period of time. The heaters will, in such cases, ensure that the BBS batteries
are sufficiently warm to provide proper backup times for the RBS.

The heaters, equipped with internal overheating protection, keep the battery
temperature within operating range as long as the outside temperature is not
below 033C.

Table 3 describes battery heater performance.

14/1551-LZA 701 6009 Uen E | 2013-11-21 9

BBS 6301 Description

Table 3 Heater Performance

Performance Description
Heating of batteries ≥+10C at an ambient temperature of
≥ 033C
The heaters start to operate when the
battery temperature reaches +10C
and continues to operate until the
battery temperature is again above
+10C

Minor inner temperature deviations may occur, depending on solar radiation

and the exact point of measurement inside the compartments.

3.3.3 Power Supply

The climate system and its control system operate at 048 V DC supplied by
the RBS. When AC mains power to the RBS is lost, the system voltage drops
and the climate system controller stops cooling and heating, to maximize the
battery backup time for the RBS.

The normal operational voltage range is 040.0 to 058.5 V DC.

3.3.4 Climate System Power Consumption

Power consumption depends on the ambient temperature and how effective
the cooling system operates.

During AC mains power failure, the cooling system, as well as the optional
heaters, are switched off to ensure maximum battery backup time for the
connected RBS. The internal fans continue to operate to ensure proper air
circulation around the battery blocks.

Table 4 and Table 5 specify the power consumption of the climate system
units per BBS cabinet.

When power is turned on, the active cooling unit performs a self-check routine
on its internal components.

system.
