THE IELTS SPEAKING MODULE

The speaking module consist of 3 parts, each


containing 4-7 questions, and about 13-16
minutes to complete. You will be asked
different questions and you will have to answer
on what you understand. The test measures
how fluently and coherently you can speak with
native and non-native English speakers in
educational and social context.

In this module of IELTS test, you will be


assessed according to the following criteria:

Fluency & Coherence


• Ability to express ideas clearly and
coherently without long hesitations.

Lexical Resources
• Range of vocabulary used
• Appropriate use of vocabulary

Grammatical Range and Accuracy


• Range of structures used
• Number of errors made

(ASSESSMENT CRITERIA):

Pronunciation
• Whether it is easy to understand what you
are saying.
• Ability to use features of English
Pronunciation (intonation, stress, and
connected speech) naturally.
• Accents are not taken into consideration.

PARTS OF THE SPEAKING MODULE:

Part 1 – Introduction and Interview


• Lasts 4 – 5 minutes
• Examiner will ask questions based on topic
frames.
• Topics are general, such as you home,
family, job or interest.

Part 2 – Individual Long Turn


• Lasts 3 – 4 minutes
• You are given a topic card and 1 minute to
prepare notes.
• You speak a monologue based on the topic
card.
• The examiner will not speak/ask questions.

Part 3 – Two-Way Discussion


• Lasts 4 – 5 minutes
• Examiner asks you questions based on the
topic from Part 2.
• You may be asked up to seven questions,
which the examiner adapts to your
proficiency level.

Examiner: Let’s talk about you home (in your country).

• What type of house or flat do you live in?


• What do you like about living there?
• What type of accommodation are typical in your
country?
• What type of accommodation would you like to live in
future?

Topic Frame 2 & 3:

Examiner: Now let’s talk about animals.

• Are there different kinds of animals in your country?


• How people in your country generally treat animals?
• Do you think people should do more to protect
animals? [Why / Why Not].
• Do animals mean anything special in your country?

• We’ve been talking about a piece of
furniture you have in your home and I’d like
to discuss with you one or two more
general questions related to this. Let’s
consider first of all buying furniture. Who
usually makes the decision about what
furniture to buy in your culture?

STRATEGY 1: Don’t memorize long answers.

STRATEGY 2: Use you imagination in your


answers.

STRATEGY 3: Use varied and advanced


vocabulary.

STRATEGY 4: Make your voice heard.

STRATEGY 5: Ask to clarify the questions you


do not understand.

STRATEGY 6: Give direct answer to examiner

STRATEGY 7: Try to sound natural speaking.

contact with examiner.
