Answer the following questions.

Q.No.1. (a): At a small private university, the students are classified as follows,

PhD M.S M.Sc. B.S.

150 163 195 220
If we wish to select a stratified random sample of size is 40 by proportional allocation,
how large a sample must we take from each stratum? and explained its briefly.

(b): A population consists of any six numbers chosen in your own interest. Draw all
possible sample of size 3 without replacement. Find the mean and the median for each
sample. From the sampling distribution of means and the sampling distribution of
medians. Which of these distributions has the smaller variance? How did the means of
these two distributions compare with population mean and variance?

Q.No.2. (a): A population
consists of seven numbers
in your own interest. Draw
all possible
samples of size 3
without replacement from
this population and
find the sample
proportion and
verify your results?

(b): A soft-drink
machine is being regulated,
so that the amount of
drink dispensed average 240 milliliters.
Periodically, the machine is checked by taking
a sample of 40 drinks and computing the
average content. If the mean of the 40 drinks is
a value within the interval, u x  2 x , the
machine is thought to be operating
satisfactorily; otherwise, adjustments
are made. The company official found the
mean of 40 drinks to obtain average 236 milliliters and concluded that the machine
needed no adjustment, was this reasonable decision?

Q.No.3. (a): A
manufacture
has developed a
new fishing line, which he claims has a mean breaking strength of 15 kilograms with a
standard deviation of 0.5 kilogram. To test the hypothesis that mean is 15 kilograms a
random sample of 50 lines will be tested. The critical region is defined to be sample mean
is less than 14.9.

(i) Find the probability of committing a type I error when H0 is true.

(ii) Evaluate β for the alternative mean is equal to 14.8 and mean is equal to 14.9
kilograms.

(b): It is claimed that 90% of men cannot tell the difference between two different
brands of cheese, but of the members of a random sample of 500 men, 72 could
distinguish between them. Is the claim justified?
