SUPERVISOR INDUCTION
Duty to inform
Without derogating from any specific duty imposed on an employer by this Act, every employer
shall-
a. as far as is reasonably practicable, cause every employee to be made conversant with the hazards to his health
and safety attached to any work which he has to perform, any article or substance which he has to produce,
process, use, handle, store or transport and any plant or machinery which he is required or permitted to use, as
well as with the precautionary measures which should be taken and observed with respect to those hazards;
a. take reasonable care for the health and safety of himself and of other persons who may be affected by
his acts or omissions;
b. as regards any duty or requirement imposed on his employer or any other person by this Act, co-
operate with such employer or person to enable that duty or requirement to be performed or complied
with;
c. carry out any lawful order given to him, and obey the health and safety rules and procedures laid down
by his employer or by anyone authorized thereto by his employer, in the interest of health or safety;
d. Never follow an unsafe instruction given to him / her under any circumstances.
e. if any situation which is unsafe or unhealthy comes to his attention, as soon as practicable report such
situation to his employer or to the health and safety representative for his workplace or section thereof,
as the case may be, who shall report it to the employer; and
f. if he is involved in any incident which may affect his health or which has caused an injury to himself,
report such incident to his employer or to anyone authorized thereto by the employer, or to his health
and safety representative, as soon as practicable but not later than the end of the particular shift during
which the incident occurred, unless the circumstances were such that the reporting of the incident was
not possible, in which case he shall report the incident as soon as practicable thereafter.
Remember: Any employee has the right to refuse work if he/she feels unsafe
or if the tools and equipment that they are using are unsafe!!

Safety Leadership
1. As a Supervisor you are responsible for all Health and Safety aspects of your work area.
2. By being the Responsible person you have to lead by example when it comes to Health and Safety and
ensure that all employees under your charge follow the correct procedures.
3. It is your responsibility to ensure your workforce engage in safe work practices at all times and act on
any employee not complying to the Safety standards.
Due Diligence
1. Due Diligence is a defence to most Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental offences.
2. Due Diligence is demonstrated if a company or individual takes all reasonable steps to avoid and
event.
3. It is you responsibility to show due diligence in your area of responsibility at all times.
4. By signing your appointment you commit yourself to ensure all reasonable steps will be followed to
prevent and avoid any injury or incident on an KASCCO Company construction site.

Emergency Procedure
1. Your employees must report any emergency to you immediately.
2. You have to ensure all employees move safely to the Assembly Point.
3. It is your responsibility to take roll call of your work force and ensure everyone is safe.
4. You have to contact the emergency services in the event of an injury otherwise instruct your SHE
Officer to contact them.
5. You have to contact the fire services in the event of an fire otherwise instruct your SHE Officer to
contact them.
6. Assist the Evacuation Marshalls in leading the employees to safety.
7. The Emergency Assembly Points will clearly be displayed and indicated on site.
8. The Emergency Procedure will be displayed on site for all to see with all the emergency telephone
numbers.
Fire Prevention
1. A Hot Work permit must be obtained before any hot work may be performed on site.
2. The correct fire fighting equipment must accompany all hot work activities.
3. All combustible material must be covered or removed when performing hot work.
4. Fire Blankets must be used when working overhead or to cover combustible material.
5. No open fires are allowed on the site.
Identify the type of fire:
Type A: Normal combustible material e.g. Wood, Paper, Cloth, etc.
Type B: Flammable liquid and gasses e.g. Petrol, Thinners, Spirits, LPG, Acetylene, etc.
Type C: Any fire in the presence of live electricity.
Type D: Combustible metals e.g. Magnesium, etc.
How to use a fire extinguisher:
Read the label on the extinguisher to determine if it is the correct type to extinguish the fire.
Pick up the extinguisher using both hands.
Remove the safety pin.
If cartridge-operated, kneel next to the extinguisher, keep head and body clear of extinguisher
and hit the plunger to activate the propellant.
Approach the fire and apply the extinguishing medium to the base of the fire by depressing the
handle on the release hose.
Weather Conditions
1. Ensure all your employees drink enough fluids in high temperature conditions to avoid dehydration /
heat stress.
2. Never allow work on elevated positions, operate plant or equipment when employees are feeling
drowsy due to heat exposure.
3. Allow frequent breaks in cool shaded areas when working in high temperatures.
4. Ensure employees always wear their gloves when working in cold weather conditions.
5. Ensure you and you employees are properly clothed to keep warn in cold conditions.
6. KASCCO Company will provide the required clothing and PPE in extreme cold conditions.
7. Work activities must be stopped by yourself in extreme high temperatures or cold temperatures.

Barricading
1. You have to ensure all unprotected openings or edges are barricaded by using scaffolding or any
approved hard barricading.
2. Barricading must hold +- 100kg of weight.
3. Ensure snow netting are used with the hard barricading.
4. Ensure that no person is allowed to climb over or under any barricading – Disciplinary action must
be taken by yourself.
5. Ensure that barricading is on a register and maintained accordingly.
1. You have to ensure that all your personnel are competent, trained and medically fit to work at
heights.
2. Ensure that a safety harness is always worn when working on a scaffold or where there is a
potential of falling from an elevated position higher than 1.8m.
3. Ensure fall protection equipment is inspected and kept on a register.
4. Ensure Tools and equipment always fitted with lanyards to prevent any object from falling.
5. Enforce that one lanyard must always be attached when working and moving around on elevated
positions.
6. Ensure that defective ladders are removed from site immediately.
7. Ensure that scaffolding is safe for use before any work proceeds on a scaffold.
8. Ensure that no employee changes or adjusts a scaffold, only trained scaffold erectors.
Confined Spaces
1. Ensure that no person is allowed to enter a confined space without being trained.
2. Ensure that no work will be allowed in a confined space without:
Confined Space Entry Permit.
Risk Assessment & DSTI.
The air tested in the confined space for any harmful or hazardous gasses / fumes.
Extractor Fans Installed (When required)
Entry & Exit Register Completed.
Correct PPE (Respirator etc.)
Assistant stationed outside the confined space entrance.
Safety Harness worn by employee inside the confined space with a life line attached.
