SUPERVISOR INDUCTION

Duty to inform
Without derogating from any specific duty imposed on an employer by this Act, every employer
shall-
a. as far as is reasonably practicable, cause every employee to be made conversant with the hazards to his health
and safety attached to any work which he has to perform, any article or substance which he has to produce,
process, use, handle, store or transport and any plant or machinery which he is required or permitted to use, as
well as with the precautionary measures which should be taken and observed with respect to those hazards;

General duties of employees at work


Every employee shall at work-

a. take reasonable care for the health and safety of himself and of other persons who may be affected by
his acts or omissions;
b. as regards any duty or requirement imposed on his employer or any other person by this Act, co-
operate with such employer or person to enable that duty or requirement to be performed or complied
with;
c. carry out any lawful order given to him, and obey the health and safety rules and procedures laid down
by his employer or by anyone authorized thereto by his employer, in the interest of health or safety;
d. Never follow an unsafe instruction given to him / her under any circumstances.
e. if any situation which is unsafe or unhealthy comes to his attention, as soon as practicable report such
situation to his employer or to the health and safety representative for his workplace or section thereof,
as the case may be, who shall report it to the employer; and
f. if he is involved in any incident which may affect his health or which has caused an injury to himself,
report such incident to his employer or to anyone authorized thereto by the employer, or to his health
and safety representative, as soon as practicable but not later than the end of the particular shift during
which the incident occurred, unless the circumstances were such that the reporting of the incident was
not possible, in which case he shall report the incident as soon as practicable thereafter.

Remember: Any employee has the right to refuse work if he/she feels unsafe
or if the tools and equipment that they are using are unsafe!!

General Health and Safety Rules


1. I will come to work physically fit and alert as I understand the hazard associated with a person under
the influence of alcohol or other drug that numbs the sense and slows reaction time.
2. I will use the protective clothing and equipment prescribed for my job, in the proper manner.
3. I will follow the instructions given by my Site Manager and inform him of the reason if it is not possible to
do so.
4. Before attempting something new or different I will discuss it with my Site Manager to avoid causing an
incident.
5. I will ensure to maintain the tools that is being used in a safe condition and turn in defective tools to the
store.
6. If employees have to climb, I will ensure that the ladders they use are not broken and has (non-slip)
safety feet. Metal ladders are not to be used when working on electricity due to the very high risk of
electrocution. I will ensure defective ladders are removed from site.
7. I will not allow employees to work at heights of over 1.8 metres without using a safety harness unless
guard rails are in place to prevent me from falling.
8. I will ensure that no person cleans up or performs any work on, or close to unguarded machinery until I
have properly locked the electrical switches.
9. I will ensure that no person attempts to operate any vehicle or other machinery that has not been
trained for or has been authorised to operate.
10. I will ensure that employees only operate their assigned equipment/vehicle/machinery only when it is
properly guarded and all safety devices, such as brakes, are in good working order.
11. I will ensure that no person is allowed under a suspended load and that they will not use lifting
equipment that has not been certified and inspected. I will ensure that all lifting equipment / tackle is
removed of site that is defective.
12. I will ensure that employees not run or hurry down stairs or jump off a high place – knowing the high
injury risk.
13. I will ensure that no employee engages in teasing, jostling, mock sparring or throwing objects, even
playful as such actions could lead to injury to myself or others.
14. I will keep my work area reasonably clean and orderly and immediately clean up any spills or tripping
hazards.
15. I will report any unsafe condition or practice that I notice to my Site Manager / SHE Officer.
16. I will report to my Site Manager / SHE Officer any injury or incident that could have resulted in injury or
equipment damage.
17. I will report to my immediate Site Manager or Safety Officer if any other Supervisor or any person
condone and practise unsafe work.

Safety Leadership
1. As a Supervisor you are responsible for all Health and Safety aspects of your work area.
2. By being the Responsible person you have to lead by example when it comes to Health and Safety and
ensure that all employees under your charge follow the correct procedures.
3. It is your responsibility to ensure your workforce engage in safe work practices at all times and act on
any employee not complying to the Safety standards.

Due Diligence
1. Due Diligence is a defence to most Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental offences.
2. Due Diligence is demonstrated if a company or individual takes all reasonable steps to avoid and
event.
3. It is you responsibility to show due diligence in your area of responsibility at all times.
4. By signing your appointment you commit yourself to ensure all reasonable steps will be followed to
prevent and avoid any injury or incident on an KASCCO Company construction site.

Safety Meetings & Communication


1. You will be required to attend safety meetings where you will address any health and safety
concerns.
2. It is you responsibility to participate in these discussions and assist in the implementation of the
required actions required coming from these meetings.
3. It will be your responsibility to ensure all areas of concerns in your work area are actioned
accordingly and feedback is given to the Site Manager and SHE Officer.
4. You must ensure that all concerns mentioned in the SHE Meetings are carried over to the work
force in the daily toolbox talks.
5. It is your responsibility that all the required health and safety awareness and information are carried
over to your workforce through the daily toolbox talks.
6. Communication of task related hazards must be done through the Risk assessments and DSTI’s.
7. If an situation arises that you cannot action by yourself then you must inform your Site Manager /
SHE Officer for assistance.

Risk Assessments, Safe Work Procedures & DSTI’s


1. You as the Supervisor must ensure that all tasks that your team conduct are done only if a specific
risk assessment, safe work procedure and DSTI has been compiled covering all the related
hazards associated with the task.
2. Risk Assessments, Safe Work Procedures & DSTI’s must always be conducted before performing
a task on site.
3. You must ensure that all employees involved in the specific task are a part of the assessment
process.
4. Supervisors must ensure that all employees must work according to the Risk Assessment, Safe
Work Procedures & DSTI at all times to prevent any incidents or accidents.
5. Risk Assessments are their too create awareness of task related hazards and prevention of any
loss or injury.
6. Planned Task Observations must be conducted by you to ensure all employees work according to
the risk assessments and safe work procedures.

Incident / Accident Reporting & Investigation


1. Report all incidents and accidents to your SHE Officer / Site Manager immediately no matter how
big or small.
2. You can prevent any re-occurrence of incidents and accidents by reporting them and implementing
preventative measures.
3. All injuries must be reported for an employee to receive immediate treatment and compensation if
required.
4. You have to ensure that employees requiring first aid treatment are treated by a competent and
trained first aider.
5. You have to ensure that employees requiring medical treatment are treated by the client approved
medical practitioner.
6. You have to ensure that all the first aid and medical treatment cases are reported accordingly.
7. You have to participate in incident investigations that have occurred or affected your workforce.
8. You have to give your full cooperation in such an investigation to establish the root causes and
preventative measures required for the future.

Personal Protective Clothing (PPE)


1. You will ensure that all your employees are issued with the required PPE to perform their tasks
safely.
2. The employer is responsible to issue PPE to his employees and re-issue PPE in the event of wear
and tear.
3. Disciplinary action must be taken by yourself if an employee is observed not wearing the
compulsory PPE or not taking care of his / or her PPE.
4. You must ensure that all employees wear the prescribed PPE according to procedures and safety
signage displayed.

Emergency Procedure
1. Your employees must report any emergency to you immediately.
2. You have to ensure all employees move safely to the Assembly Point.
3. It is your responsibility to take roll call of your work force and ensure everyone is safe.
4. You have to contact the emergency services in the event of an injury otherwise instruct your SHE
Officer to contact them.
5. You have to contact the fire services in the event of an fire otherwise instruct your SHE Officer to
contact them.
6. Assist the Evacuation Marshalls in leading the employees to safety.
7. The Emergency Assembly Points will clearly be displayed and indicated on site.
8. The Emergency Procedure will be displayed on site for all to see with all the emergency telephone
numbers.

Fire Prevention
1. A Hot Work permit must be obtained before any hot work may be performed on site.
2. The correct fire fighting equipment must accompany all hot work activities.
3. All combustible material must be covered or removed when performing hot work.
4. Fire Blankets must be used when working overhead or to cover combustible material.
5. No open fires are allowed on the site.
Identify the type of fire:
Type A: Normal combustible material e.g. Wood, Paper, Cloth, etc.
Type B: Flammable liquid and gasses e.g. Petrol, Thinners, Spirits, LPG, Acetylene, etc.
Type C: Any fire in the presence of live electricity.
Type D: Combustible metals e.g. Magnesium, etc.
How to use a fire extinguisher:
 Read the label on the extinguisher to determine if it is the correct type to extinguish the fire.
 Pick up the extinguisher using both hands.
 Remove the safety pin.
 If cartridge-operated, kneel next to the extinguisher, keep head and body clear of extinguisher
and hit the plunger to activate the propellant.
 Approach the fire and apply the extinguishing medium to the base of the fire by depressing the
handle on the release hose.

Drugs and Alcohol


1. No employee will come into the construction site under the influence of any drugs or alcohol, you
have to report such an employee to the Site Manager / SHE Officer immediately.
2. No alcohol or drugs are allowed on the construction site.
3. Any employee caught on site under the influence or possession of alcohol or drugs will be escorted
off site and disciplined immediately.
4. Random testing will take place throughout the project.
5. All employees will be tested for drug or alcohol in the event of an injury.

Weather Conditions
1. Ensure all your employees drink enough fluids in high temperature conditions to avoid dehydration /
heat stress.
2. Never allow work on elevated positions, operate plant or equipment when employees are feeling
drowsy due to heat exposure.
3. Allow frequent breaks in cool shaded areas when working in high temperatures.
4. Ensure employees always wear their gloves when working in cold weather conditions.
5. Ensure you and you employees are properly clothed to keep warn in cold conditions.
6. KASCCO Company will provide the required clothing and PPE in extreme cold conditions.
7. Work activities must be stopped by yourself in extreme high temperatures or cold temperatures.

Housekeeping and Waste Disposal on site


1. No person is allowed to discard any personal or construction waste on the site, only in prescribed
areas.
2. The eating areas must be kept clean at all times.
3. Waste bins will be provided for personal and construction waste.
4. Clean your work area at the end of every shift.
5. Avoid tripping hazards by cleaning / removing off cuts and routing electrical cables out of walkways.
6. Disciplinary action will be taken against any person caught disposing waste in the wrong areas.

Maintenance and Inspections of Tools, Equipment & Plant.


1. You are responsible to ensure the employees look after their tools, equipment and plant.
2. You have to ensure that action is taken when personnel report any defects or damage on tools,
equipment and plant.
3. Ensure the workforce does visual inspections on tools and equipment daily before starting with your
task.
4. Ensure Monthly inspections are conducted and recorded on a register by appointed inspectors and
over inspect.
5. Ensure Daily inspections are done on plant equipment and recorded on a register and over inspect.
6. Ensure that no homemade hand tools will be allowed.

Barricading
1. You have to ensure all unprotected openings or edges are barricaded by using scaffolding or any
approved hard barricading.
2. Barricading must hold +- 100kg of weight.
3. Ensure snow netting are used with the hard barricading.
4. Ensure that no person is allowed to climb over or under any barricading – Disciplinary action must
be taken by yourself.
5. Ensure that barricading is on a register and maintained accordingly.

Working on Elevated Positions.(Higher than 1.8m) – Ladders, Scaffolding etc.

1. You have to ensure that all your personnel are competent, trained and medically fit to work at
heights.
2. Ensure that a safety harness is always worn when working on a scaffold or where there is a
potential of falling from an elevated position higher than 1.8m.
3. Ensure fall protection equipment is inspected and kept on a register.
4. Ensure Tools and equipment always fitted with lanyards to prevent any object from falling.
5. Enforce that one lanyard must always be attached when working and moving around on elevated
positions.
6. Ensure that defective ladders are removed from site immediately.
7. Ensure that scaffolding is safe for use before any work proceeds on a scaffold.
8. Ensure that no employee changes or adjusts a scaffold, only trained scaffold erectors.

New Workers on site


1. It is your responsibility that all new workers on site are inducted accordingly and instructed on all
the related hazards associated with their tasks and environment.
2. Ensure that any new worker is coached and lead by a competent employee for at least 1 week.
(Mentor Training)
3. You have to ensure that the required training is conducted on the new worker according to the
Training Matrix.
4. It is your responsibility to report to the Site Manager if you feel that a new worker is not adjusting to
the site requirements.

Lifting and Rigging Activities


1. Ensure only competent and trained employees are allowed to operate lifting machines and perform
rigging activities.
2. Ensure that all lifting plant and tackle are inspected before use and any defective equipment
removed from site.
3. Ensure Mobile Cranes are inspected daily before use.
4. Ensure Lifting Tackle is inspected visually daily and monthly by a competent appointed inspector.
5. Ensure no person is allowed under a suspended load at any time.
6. Ensure that all lifting and rigging areas are barricaded with the correct signage displayed.
7. Ensure employees are aware of the Riggers whistle that warns people of lifting activities.
8. Ensure that guide ropes are used when moving / lifting loads to prevent uncontrolled swinging
loads.

Compressed Gas Cylinders


1. Ensure no employee is allowed to attach any equipment to gas cylinders unless he has been
trained to do so.
2. Ensure that no person is allowed to smoke near compressed gas cylinders.
3. Ensure that the Compressed Gas Cylinders are stored in an approved storage cage / area.
4. Ensure that compressed gas cylinders are never transported on the back of a vehicle if they are not
secured and upright.

Confined Spaces
1. Ensure that no person is allowed to enter a confined space without being trained.
2. Ensure that no work will be allowed in a confined space without:
 Confined Space Entry Permit.
 Risk Assessment & DSTI.
 The air tested in the confined space for any harmful or hazardous gasses / fumes.
 Extractor Fans Installed (When required)
 Entry & Exit Register Completed.
 Correct PPE (Respirator etc.)
 Assistant stationed outside the confined space entrance.
 Safety Harness worn by employee inside the confined space with a life line attached.

Working close to Excavations or Trenches


1. Ensure that no employee is allowed to enter any excavation or trench at any time.
2. Ensure that any unprotected excavation or trench are barricaded accordingly.
3. Ensure drivers and operators are aware of any excavations or trenches at all times.
4. Ensure spotters are used when maneuvering plant and vehicles close to excavations or trenches.
5. Ensure employee don’t attempt to jump over excavations or trenches to take shortcuts.
