Aim/Objective: Students will be able to describe characteristics of animal cells

Animal themed commendation stickers
Whiteboard markers
Animal cell cut outs
Mini Scrabble tiles (paper)

Procedure: Time:
Do Now/Hook:
Students will play a quick recap game where the class will be split in 2 teams. Each 5
member of a team will fast walk (no running) to the board and write down any keyword
they remember from the previous class. It will be a mini-race under 3 minutes, of which
team remembers and has the most correct answers. This will be a good warmup and
refresher.
This is not a competition! This is just a fun, simple game to get the students hyped for the
lesson. All students will get stickers at the end for participation!

Direct Instruction/Modeling: 5
We will, as a class, choose some of the funniest / easiest to remember poems from last
class to say as a whole class to familiarize the students with the definitions of terms learnt
last time.
During the class, we will begin looking into animal cells and their basic structure.
Can anyone list any features of animal cells? Eg. they move / they don’t produce their
own food unlike plants.
We can even play games like wordman for other activity alternatives to refresh memories
of last classes’ content.

Student Practice/Application:
Students will get a cut out structure of an animal cell. 20
I will give them a step by step demonstration of how to draw an animal cell.
Then they will learn of the few structures inside an animal cell.
After learning their definitions, students will be put into pairs. They will play a little game
Mini Scrabble. I will give them printed tiles of the letters of the new words we have
studied. Then, in pairs they will have to form the words that we just studied. Again, not
promoted as a competition but a fun game activity to get students excited about their
learning!

In groups, students will pick out a chit from a bowl which would have a new word that 10
they learned in today’s class. Students will use the remaining class time to prepare for the
mini skit and perform it the following lesson.

Wrap up/Closure:
At the end of the day, students will get a personalized achievement sticker that commends
them on their work over the past 2 lessons. Eg. If I think student A was particularly 5
concentrated, they would get the “concentrating crocodile” sticker. If student B preserved
in the lesson, they would get the “proud parrot” sticker.

Today, they learnt 3 new words relating to the structure of animal cells. I would like them
to add to their poster chart which marks the new vocabulary they learn each lesson.

Now we would have covered the basic structures of plant and animal cells, we will be moving onto
why they both are classified as living things.
