activities. In order to succeed today, organizations that are competing in global markets are
increasing rapidly. The increased use of technologies such as the Internet and intranets will
definitely revolutionize how businesses will operate and how they will use computers to compete.

The Internet and related technologies and applications have changed the ways companies operate
their businesses processes and activities. Companies can network their offices and share data to be
more effective and efficient. However, excessive use of the Internet and intranet also create intense
competition daily in the marketplace for companies. Therefore, in order to be a successful
company, these technologies alongside with computers will transform their roles in the business
world to lead to a more effective and powerful standing company. Enterprise collaboration systems
involve the use of software tools to support communication, coordination, and collaboration
among the members of networked teams and workgroups.

A company may use intranet and Internet to implement such systems. For example, employees
and external consultants may form a virtual team that uses a corporate intranet and the Internet for
e-mail, videoconferencing, electronic discussion groups, and Web pages of work-in-progress
information to collaborate on business projects. The Internet is a global system of interconnected
computer networks that use the standard Internet Protocol Suite to serve billions of users
worldwide. Internet, organization can connect directly with the general public especially with the
customers. Opportunities range from giving away basic product information to automatically
updating or patching retail software. Many businesses also conduct retail operations online.

An intranet is a computer network that uses Internet Protocol technology to securely share any part
of an organization’s information or network operating system within that organization. The term
is used in contrast to internet, a network between organizations, and instead refers to a network
within an organization. Sometimes the term refers only to the organization’s internal website, but
may be a more extensive part of the organization’s information technology infrastructure.
Organizations often use internet technologies to facilitate operations within the organization. Such
systems might also include product support knowledge bases, training systems, and access to the
organization’s benefits system.

Companies use intranet to support their business processes: -Internet is a private-internal
network that enables only company employees to share information , collaborate and improve their
communications by using LAN and WAN. Intranet operate as private networks with limited
access. Only employees who are issued password and access codes are able to use them.
Increasingly, businesses are relying on intranets to deliver tools such as collaboration, scheduling,
customer relationship management tools, and project management to increase the productivity of
the organization. An intranet is a private network accessible only to an organization’s staff. Unlike
the Internet, an internal intranet provides a wide range of information and services to employees
of an organization but these tools and information are unavailable to the public. A company-wide
intranet is an important focal point of internal communication and collaboration, and can provide
a business with a single starting point to access both internal and external resources. Larger
businesses allow users within their intranet to access the public Internet through firewall servers.
Because businesses have the ability to screen both incoming and outgoing traffic, they are able to
keep the security of the intranet intact.

Some of the advantages and benefits a company can realize from establishing a robust
intranet are as follows:

1. Workforce productivity: Intranets can help users to locate and view information faster
and use applications relevant to their roles and responsibilities.

2. Enhanced collaboration: Information is easily accessible by all authorized users, which

enables teamwork. Being able to communicate in real-time through integrated third party
tools promotes the sharing of ideas and helps boost a business’ productivity

3. Time Savings: Intranets allow organizations to distribute information to employees on

an as-needed basis in real time. Employees may link directly to relevant information as
soon as the organization makes it available on the intranet.

4. Reduced Costs: Users can view information and data via web-browser rather than
maintaining physical documents such as procedure manuals, internal phone list and
requisition forms. This can potentially save the business money on printing, duplicating
documents, and the environment as well as document maintenance overhead.

3
5. Improved Communication: Intranets can serve as powerful tools for communication
within an organization.

into account the needs of your business and to weigh the advantages of including the internet in
your business model.

Potential Access to a Global Market: The internet is an excellent tool for increasing the visibility
of your business. The internet overlooks physical borders, thereby giving your products and
services heightened exposure to a global audience. This can lead to increased sales.

Reduced Marketing Costs: With the rise of the internet, there has been a huge increase in various
social media platforms. These platforms that are designed to connect people with one another
become powerful, relatively low-cost marketing channels that can be utilized by both large and
small enterprises. The internet means that you can put your products and services right in front
of your target market without using the help of a formal marketing agency to do it for you, but
at a much greater cost.

Reduced Building Overhead: Many jobs and business functions can be performed online. This
means that incorporating the internet into your business functions could open up an opportunity to
have remote staff who can work from home.

Conclusion: - Internet, organization can connect directly with the general public. Opportunities
range from giving away basic product information to automatically updating or patching retail
software. Intranets, organizations often use internet technologies to facilitate operations within the
organization. Such systems might include product support knowledge bases, training systems, and
access to the organization’s benefits system. Organizations use internet technologies to connect
with both customers and suppliers. These technologies allow customers to generate and track their
own orders as well as manager their accounts. Intranet applications support communications and
collaboration, business operations and management, web publishing, and Intranet management.

customers, suppliers, and business partners. Employees within a company, or external business
partners, can access and run applications using web browsers from anywhere on the network
whenever needed. The Internet, Intranets of networks are now the primary information technology
