FUNDAMENTALS
OF AUDITING
from a Saint Hill Special Briefing Course Lecture
There are probably thousands
and thousands of rules in auditing.
Yet there are only a few very
fundamental rules.
Despite these thousands and
thousands of rules of thumb,
maxims, what you do and what
you don't do, if you haven't got
these few little basics down, audit-
ing does not occur.
There are these very very senior
data on the subject of auditing:
1. Auditing is a third dynamic
activity.
2. The basis of it is communica-
tion.
3. You have to audit the pc in
front of you.
I don't care how many other
thousands of rules you have fol-
lowed, if you've violated those
little rules, you've had it. You
won't ever have any auditing occur.
Somebody might come along and
tell you that the reason you aren't
getting any place is because you're
handling the E-Meter on the right
and you should be handling it on
the left. Or because you're not
taking up the pc's present time
problems. Or, frankly, how can you
expect to audit the pc if you have
dirty fingernails? Or that you must
improve your diction in order to
audit a pc properly. You could just
go on down with innumerable items,
all of them quite valid, which, if
you repaired them without repair-
ing the first three I have mentioned
would not make one bit of improve-
ment in your auditing.
Some auditors get into a com-
plete fog of the fantastic number of
things they have to do and
remember in order to audit. And in
doing and remembering these thou-
sands of things they must do, they
neglect those little fundamentals.
They cease to audit the pc in front
of them, they neglect communica-
tion as the primary function and
action in auditing, and they sit
there, as a totally individuated
island — a first dynamic auditing a
nowhere. Of course they never get
any auditing done, if these funda-
mentals have been totally over-
looked.
It doesn't matter how precise-
ly you turn your toes in as you
sit in the chair doing TR Zero. It
doesn't matter how much Listerine
you gargle before the session, or
how many advertisements you put

out about what a good auditor you
are, hoping the pc will hear them
and be impressed. If you've neg-
lected the fundamentals of audit-
ing, you never get any auditing
done.
Auditing is a third dynamic
activity. The auditor and the pc are,
basically, a group. The activity they
are engaged in is communication,
and the auditor is auditing the pc in
front of him. If those things are
occurring, auditing will happen. If
those things are not occurring, you
could handle these thousands of
rules and you would never make
any auditing take place.

Course graduate will very often go
home and find that there are people
around who don't think there is a
right way to audit. They think it's
something they dream up as they
go along. They think this and they
think that. It boils down to the fact
that they don't know there is a
right way to audit. Any unpracticed
auditor who has not been very fero-
ciously schooled on this subject will
tend to overlook this - that there is
a right way to audit. And the right
way to audit is to consider an audit-
ing session a third dynamic activity,
which has to do with communica-
tion, and to audit the pc in front of
you. Then auditing occurs.
Now someone might say, "A
Saint Hill Graduate? Well, of course,
they just learned all of these little
tricks and all of these little nuances,
and therefore they look good." No,
I don't think that's it at all. I think
that around here, on the Briefing
Course, you find out that auditing
can occur; that there is a right way
to audit. Your case gains are coming
on up the line, and through practice,
through interest in what you are
doing, you start auditing the pc in
front of you, communication starts
to occur, and soon you can't con-
ceive of auditing being anything but
a third dynamic activity.
Another thing that happens on
the Saint Hill Special Briefing
Course is that you get over being
self-conscious about auditing. There
is so much auditing going on and so
much being demanded, that you
get into a state where you haven't
got any time to be self-conscious
about it. An auditor at Saint Hill
looks very relaxed when he's audit-
ing. It's one of the points you look
for. He's stopped worrying.
But if you neglect these funda-
mentals, then you can add thou-
sands of things to do. Then you
have to have rules to handle the
pc's origins, rules to handle this,
rules to handle that. That's a
curative measure. That's trying to
keep people from multiplying and
adding nonsense which has nothing
to do with auditing.
If somebody wants rules, I'll give
them rules. But all I'm doing is
writing a bunch of rules on how
you get out of a swamp. Well, what
were you doing in the swamp?
Here's the road marked with tape
on both sides of it and arrows, an^.
it's bright daylight, and there you
are a quarter of a mile away stand-
ing in the middle of a black swamp.
And you say, "Ron, give me some
rules. How do we get out of these
swamps?" So I say, "All right, I'll
give you some rules — but what in
blazes are you doing in the swamp?
How did you get there? Auditing
must seem like a very complicated
activity to you if you are over there
in the swamp. How many rules did
you follow that got you into the
swamp?"

The student must pass a TV Demonstration on
auditing Prepared Lists to graduate from the Class VI
Course.
FORMAT
The Senior SHSBC is now in the best format for the
student to get a real understanding of the various
Rundowns which have been developed since 1970. All
the materials on PTS Handling are done as one check-
sheet which is one section of the Senior SHSBC, all the
materials on Confessionals are together in one section
of the Senior SHSBC, and so on.
It's on the Senior SHSBC that an auditor really
becomes an expert on the Class VI skills of handling
Prepared Lists and the various Rundowns since 1970.
The student gets drilled on these materials and is made
to audit them until he can do so with ease and can
handle any case. The Senior SHSBC is an extremely
important course as it's where an Auditor learns all the
skills to crack cases.
SCHEDULE
The schedule of the Senior SHSBC is the same as the
schedule of the SHSBC.
CO-AUDITS
The emphasis of the SHSBC is on training real pro-
fessional auditors.

"At Saint Hill our responsibility is to train auditors.
"It is the students' responsibility during and after
Saint Hill to get clear.
"By treating Saint Hill as an HGC, we could clear
every student present. But also, by treating Saint Hill
as an HGC we would bog down Scientology every-
where. "
Although students can co-audit during their daily
practical and auditing time, the concentration is on
getting the student's skill in application up to Saint
Hill standards.
A Post Graduate, Co-Audit is set up as Unit G of the
SHSBC which students can route onto after completing
Class VI, to co-audit if they desire. It is recommended
that anyone who plans a major co-audit and case han-
dling wait until this point when he is fully trained.
A small fee is charged for the CSing and use of Saint
Hill services.

Per HCO PL 11 Dec 69 TRAINING OF CLEARS, a
Clear may do the SHSBC without previous Academy
training. It has however, been long standing policy for
anyone doing the SHSBC to be a qualified Dianetic
Auditor, thus HSDC is required, even for Clears.

No case requisite is needed for the SHSBC or
Senior SHSBC.
CLASSIFICATION
Class V graduates are awarded the provisional certi-
ficate of Hubbard Validated Auditor.
Graduates of the Class VI Course are awarded the
provisional certificate of Hubbard Senior Scientologist.
The Class VI Auditor is awarded full permanent HSS
Certificate on successful completion of the Class VI
Internship.
COURSE MATERIALS
Students are expected to provide or purchase their
own E-Meters, worksheets, auditor report forms, pens,
clocks, books, packs, dictionary, doll, etc.
CONCLUSION
Class VI auditors are very special and important
people. They are highly skilled and trained on the full
theory of Scientology Technology as developed when
Ron was at Saint Hill.
The Briefing Course is a very rigorous course and has
to maintain a very high level of standard to get its pro-
duct of professional Class VI auditors.

Fundamentals of Auditing continued
The difficulty is, the human race does
not want a third dynamic acitivity and
doesn't know anything about it. As far
as communication is concerned, it quite
often consists of evaluation and invalida-
tion. There's no communication. Nobody
ever finishes a cycle of communication.
Things they talk about are non-sequitur:
they never follow up any subject with
any other related subject. It's just a dis-
persed mish-mash of invalidation and
evaluation. That is what passes for
communication.
So an auditor, or a person learning
to be an auditor, has his first strike on
him because he has been associating
with homo sap. He would make a per-
fect auditor if it weren't for that. We've
got to cure him of it. Therefore we have
rules, like TR-4, Q and A and other
things we have put in. What are those
things doing there? They are trying to
bypass and not let into the session a
number of human aberrations which
already exist in the communication
habits of the person who is trying to
audit.
For instance, I had someone once
who didn't realize that when the pc
originated, the cycle should be per-
mitted; that the auditing cycle occurred
when the pc originated. They thought
it only occurred when the auditor origin-
ated, and that's why they Q'd and A'd.
Only the auditor, they thought, was
supposed to begin and end a communica-
tion cycle. Well, that immediately is not
a third dynamic activity and you are not.
auditing the pc in front of you, because
the pc in front of you is not permitted to
originate a communication.
The pc says "Black is white". An
auditor who still has the cramps and
coughs of being a homo sap, tends to
handle this a la homo sap. Somebody
says "Black is white". This violates his
reality or something, so he "writes
script" — he dubs in. He says, "This
person is nuts." So he says to the person,
"You're nuts! Black is not white!" That's
homo sap at work, you see. A big figure-
figure is added into the middle of a com-
munication cycle. Where do you find any
"think" in a communication cycle? It
doesn't exist.
You find most auditors learning to
audit have difficulties with pcs in direct
ratio to the amount of extraneous "think"
that they add into the communication
cycle. The pc says something so they
think something.
What's the proper response to "Black
is white"? "Thank you." That's just a
pure communication cycle.
Auditing is based on communication,"
and the basic communication formula is
much simpler than homo sap makes it
out to be. I think the homo sap com-
munication formula is "I originate and
you invalidate", then, "I evaluate and
you negate".
No, the various rules of the game are
that it is a session, that auditing is based
on a pure communication cycle and that
the pc who is sitting in front of you is the
pc you've got to audit. You cannot audit
a meter and get a clear pc.
There is no substitute for putting a pc
into session. There is no substitute for
giving him an auditing session. And if
you're going to get yourself tangled up
•in 8,765 rules, well, that's just that many
rules between you and the pc that are
forbidding auditing. If those rules are
being used to prevent a third dynamic, to
interrupt or upset a communication
cycle, or to get out of auditing the pc in
front of you, then those rules are not for
that session.
There are many ways to audit pes.
There are many styles of auditing. But
there is no substitute for auditing. What
does the pc consider auditing? An allevia-
tion of his upset, reaching his basic pur-
poses and driving down the road - those
things are auditing to the pc.
There is a right way to audit. It's good,.
direct, straightforward, and audits the pc.
The basic patterns of auditing that you
are using are very very refined patterns.
As you're sitting there auditing the pc,
you are in the very fortunate position of
not having to develop auditing. The test
of a good auditor is when he has learned
this. He just uses the tools he's got and
carries on down the line. He uses them
sufficiently well and gets something
done.
The bad auditor doesn't know that
these things exist. He thinks there are
thousands of ways to audit and that he's
got to dream up the thousand-and-first
one right in the middle of the session.
That's just another way of figure-figuring
your way out of giving somebody a
session.
There are right ways to audit. We're
teaching you the right ways to audit.
You'd be surprised how many rules have
been lopped off of auditing. The most
direct approach to auditing happens to
be the very pattern of auditing and the
equipment of auditing that you have
right at the present moment. There is a
way to audit, and the more you
embroider that, the more you add to it,
the more unnecessary stress you put on
it, the less it will work.
There are right ways to audit, there
are right things to do. The auditor who
audits according to pattern in the
smoothest way gets the furthest in the
long run, so long as he isn't violating
those three basic rules that I have given
you.

 THE BRIEFING COURSE
is better than ever!
The Saint Hill Special Briefing Course has been over-
hauled so as to attain the original purposes of the Course
as stated in HCO PL 9 July 1962 SPECIAL BRIEFING
COURSE and HCO PL 12 Nov AD 12 PURPOSE OF
THE SAINT HILL SPECIAL BRIEFING COURSE. The
foremost purpose of the course is in training auditors.
The course gives students a full understanding of the
Technology of Scientology as developed by Ron at
Saint Hill from 1961-1966. SHSBC students get a full
command of the theory of Scientology as well as being
required to pass a high level of auditing skill before they
are allowed to graduate from the course.
The course is run rigidly and by the book.
FORMAT
The new format of Level V Saint Hill Special Briefing
Course exactly parallels the HCOB Volumes from 1950-
1966.
So that the student has a complete knowledge of the
development of Scientology when Ron was at Saint Hill,
dozens of taped lectures by Ron have been added.
When the student arrives at ASHO, he is given a con-
sultation by a trained Saint Hill Specialist. In this inter-
view, any weak areas of his auditing application are
located and a special individualized program is drawn
up for the student whereby all previous areas of mis-
understoods are handled as a first action. The student is
drilled thoroughly on the materials of earlier courses he
is weak on by his twin when he is on his practical time.
He audits these actions during his daily practical period
until he can audit the Styles of Auditing to Saint Hill
Standards.
The student does practical and auditing daily and
during this set aside time he progresses through his pro-
gram as set by the Saint Hill Specialist when he com-
menced course.
A TV Demonstration is required to be done and
passed before the student can graduate Level V SHSBC.
This demo must show that the student's presence and
metering and TRs are that of Saint Hill Standards. If
the student flunks this Demo, the student must do
another TV demo until he passes.
SCHEDULES
FULL TIME STUDENTS:
A. PRACTICAL OR AUDITING: 9 AM to 12 NOON
B. THEORY: 1 PM to 6 PM
Q THEORY: 7 PM to 10:30 PM
On Level V SHSBC there are approximately 850
hours of Theory to be studied if the student is moving
well. Therefore a full time schedule is by far to the
student's advantage. If the student attends on week-
days and puts in 5 hours of study on weekends it will
take the student approximately 28 weeks to do Level 5.
If the student does not come in on weekends this
time goes to approximately 34 weeks.
On Level V SHSBC if the stuc'ent keeps a full time
schedule the number of weeks to do Level V is 14 weeks.
If the student keeps a Foundation schedule including
full time on weekends the student will take approxi-
mately 28 weeks to graduate from Level V.
NOTE: When the student has completed his program as
set when he routed onto SHSBC and has passed his TV
Demo and finished his auditing requirements, he is no
longer required to spend 3 hours in the morning on
Practical or Auditing. During this period he may study
on his theory instead.
SENIOR SHSBC
The Senior SHSBC has been overhauled so that the
students achieve Class VI skills in the best possible
manner. It's on the Senior SHSBC that real profession-
als are made that can audit all types of auditing actions
with ease and are true experts in the handling of Pre-
pared Lists, Interiorization Rundown, Confessionals,
Co-Audit Supervision. Very high Class VI standards
must be met on these actions before Class VI Auditors

If it weren't for Scientology, TED
MARTIN of Colorado wouldn't have
been able to get away from his business
long enough to do the Briefing Course.
But then, if it weren't for Scientology,
he probably wouldn't still BE in business.
Ted's three dry cleaning plants were
going downhill until he turned them
around using Scientology policy. He put
in statistics, hats, checksheets and packs
for every post in the place in 1973 and his
volume increased 25% the first year with
the businesses being managed by his 21-
year old son. Business has continued to
increase each year since, despite the fact
that the dry cleaning industry as a whole
has showed a consistent yearly decline
over the last decade.

The Hubbard E-Meler is a religious artifact developed for the exclusive use of ordained
Ministers and theological students who are trained in its use in Church ministrations. It is noi
intended for and is forbidden by the Church to be used in any medical or physical treatment or
the diagnosis, treatment or prevention of any disease. By itself it does nothing and is strictly
not to be employed for medical or scientific purposes. Its purpose is to assist the minuter to
locate in his parishioner areas of travail so that he can assist in the relief of spiritual suffering
The existence and use of the E-Meter is sanctioned by law and the copying of it or attempts by
unqualified persons, doctors, scientists, psychologists, or psychiatrists, to obtain or use one arc
actionable under law in the United States. To obtain an E-Meter one must be a sincerely
enrolled student of the Church of Scientology or a fully qualified Minister of the Church and
must undertake as well to become wholly skilled in its purpose and use. No other persons arc
permitted to have E-Meters. The Church permits the E-Meter to be sold, possessed, or owned
only under these conditions.
