Guidance to Evaluate a Research Proposal

Please answer the following questions:

1. Research question(s) and motivation: Can you easily identify the research question(s) in
this proposal? Is the research question important and interesting?

2. Literature: Does this proposal demonstrate an adequate understanding of the relevant


literature in the research field (area) and cite an appropriate range of literature sources?

3. Hypothesis development: What framework theory or literature underlies the development


of hypotheses? What are the variables in this proposal? Can you easily identify the
relations among variables? Are the hypotheses on the relations among variables
reasonable and convincing?

4. Proposed research methodology: can you easily identify the research method (e.g.,
experimental, survey, archival?) Can you easily identify the data (financial data or
participants)? Can you easily identify the dependent and independent variables? Are
these any proposed research model? Overall, is the research method well designed, that
is, is the design of the research method appropriate to answer the research question(s)?
5. Potential Implications for research and/or practice: Does the proposal clearly identify any
implications for research and/or practice? What are the proposal’s strengths and
weaknesses? Will answering this research question enhance our understanding of the
research field (e.g., corporate disclosures)?

6. Quality of Communication: Does the proposal clearly express its case and is easy to
read/understand?
