Mr. Gwendon O. Reyes, began his undergraduate studies as a mechanical engineering student at Bicol

University in Legazpi, Albay. He was merely pressured by the achievements and expectations of his parents and

siblings that time. While he did very well during his engineering studies, he spent a good part of his time

conversing with people and having acquaintances. He wanted to make his family proud and ‘also’ reach the

achievements of his siblings. Although he tried to fair in mathematics, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus and

the like but he wasn’t able to further excel in those subjects.

So he thought, why not, try the course Hospitality Management that is seemingly part of giving services

and encountering people of different ‘walks’ of life, which was his forte and one of his strengths as a person.

Hence, he transferred to Divine Word College of Legazpi taking up the said course which he preferred and

excelled therein from. After three (3) years of studying and taking up summer classes to cope up with lost time

from his previous course, he graduated with awards and recognition from the school for participating and being

part of the collegiate basketball team and also serving as their team captain for two (2) years.

He started his hospitality industry experience while studying his undergraduate course which is Hospitality

Management. During these times he was able to take part in curriculum activities such as local tours, ship-board

training, and local hotel practicum programs. But his wide horizon for the industry opened when he was on his

last year in college, he was offered to take part in a work and travel program wherein students would have their

practical training overseas. There he was a housekeeper in Holiday Inn in Destin, Florida. During his first month

of training. He was promoted from being a Housekeeper to a Front Office Associate having been rated very

competent and with the efficient tasks assigned to him despite his young age. The program lasted for five (5)

months, after which, he came back to the Philippines for the graduation ceremonies.

After graduation, he was offered to return to the same company and have the opportunity to work for them

abroad as an intern for one (1) year and eventually had the bright prospect of being hired directly. However due

to some previous commitments, he held back and declined the offer and instead, he tried to apply in hotels and

resorts locally. Unfortunately, luck was not on his side at that time. Unexpectedly, he received a message from

his school regarding an offer for a teaching position which at first seemed ‘inappropriate’ for his interests and

personality. Because in his collegiate days he was not a studious student nor was he good in public speaking. But

as his close professor in Theology once told him, “If it scares you and excites you at same, then you should

certainly do it because dreams don’t work unless you do.” Viñas (2015)

He accepted the job and began teaching and found himself overwhelmed by the mere fact that he was

actually good at teaching and inspiring students to change and be a guiding instrument for them to find and excel

in their chosen fields. Hence, to be fully recognized as a full pledged educator, he took up courses from the

education department and finished the same while he was still teaching. Afterwards, he felt the need to take the

Licensure Examination for teachers and Civil Service Examination too for competency and self-fulfillment. He

luckily passed the two examinations consecutively. While teaching, he also enrolled himself in TESDA courses

wherein he earned and achieved accomplishments having been able to pass both National Certification II

competencies for food, beverage and housekeeping services.

He just recently finished his Masters Course (MSTHM) at De LaSalle College of Saint Benilde, which he

was very fortunate to have at a young age was granted a full scholarship of the government (CHED). To him

being able to study in one of the most prestigious schools in the country is already an achievement. Which he is

confident that this rare privilege will help him further to grow and learn as a young professional and educator.

Eventually, this will enable him to share his knowledge and give back appreciation to his sending institution once

he finishes the course and; hoping to graduate the following year.

Furthermore, his long term goal is to excel in this field and be a changing instrument not only to the

department more particularly to the lives of his students. This is he plans to do if he would be given the chance to

become the dean of the College of Hospitality Management in the years to come. He is also fully cognizant that

this Doctorate Degree that he is taking up in one of the most respected schools in the region which is Bicol College

would be of great and vital factor to achieve this ultimate goal.

It is with great expectation that he took this course to learn much from Advance Philosophy Management

which is very relevant to the practice of hospitality management. Eventually hoping to expand his knowledge

about various brackets of the human resource aspect of the hospitality industry and enhance skills especially on

how to promote and cultivate the essential qualities of being a team player and a team leader.

He also expects to widen his talents and hone capabilities for future use to explore his maximum potential.

He hopes to share this to the students that he would be handling throughout his teaching career. Same goes for

analyzing employer and employee relationship trends and being able to identify lapses and advantages that could

be utilized not only within the hospitality world but also in his institution and more importantly, as a tool for

decision making purposes.

Even with an average knowledge about Philosophy, he would commit and endeavor to strive for his final

rating which would be through hard work, motivation, and self-discipline. He knows this cannot be obtained or

achieved without appropriate corresponding input. A passing rate would also be very much appreciated if it is the

rating that he deserves. Suffice to say that the knowledge and learnings from this course will be inculcated in him

for personal and professional growth for the rest of his life.
