A.)
Kathleen Bartholomew was the speaker of the event. According to her story, she was not a
nurse on calling. Anyway due to the terrible separation with her husband, she was inspired to
be a nurse. In the wake of realizing that her husband wants have a divorce, she at that point got
terminated from her work. Luckily, a client came in and offer her a service of a lawyer. It took
her two weeks of thinking before she at that point chose to acknowledge the offer. Conversing
with the said attorney, she honestly said that she doesn't have any cash to pay him. Luckily
Kathleen was offered a free case but in return she had to study to become a nurse.
B) The topic is "Lessons from nursing to the world"
C.) The objective of the speech is to let the audience know about lessons that can be learned
from the Nursing profession. It entails the scope and limitations of the profession and the
difference between the physician and the nurse.
D.) The speaker used her own personal journey as a “wow factor” to keep the audiences
mesmerized by the struggles and hardships that she had to endure during her journey to
success. Her strategy clearly shows us that the philosophy of “show rather than tell” can greatly
affect on how interested the audiences can be of your speech and how good the actual speech
is.
E.) Nurses have a different role from the physician because nurses have to spend time with
patients, give important medical information for the patient’s well-being and identify each
individual physicians with their own specialties.
F.) First of all, it was stated in the speech that nurses spend a significant amount of time with
the patients. In fact it was said by Kathleen that nurses go on duty for eight hours a day and this
allotted time enables nurses to know their patient in a more personal level rather than the
limited amount of time that the physician has allotted. Secondly, as nurses we are the ones who
spend the most time in gathering information for the health care team and physician. Which
means that it is through our help that the physicians can do their job better. With our help we
can remind them of their duties and roles. The last point is that we nurses have the
responsibility to refer our patient to the right physician with the right specialty. Through this
simple act, we can give a high quality type of care to the client.
G.) The strategy that was used in the conclusion was leaving an impact to the audience by
“showing” how professionals work in the field. She also showed how unity in the work place
can greatly affect the healthcare that is provided and how it would be amazing if there is no
hierarchy of positions in the workplace.
H.) The speaker ended the speech with a striking sentence that is “If there will be no more
boundaries between high paying jobs and low paying jobs, we all, can save lives”. This sentence
can shake the hearts of the audience because we live in a world where reality gets the best of
us. We all lose the child-like sense of adventure and curiosity because as we all grow up we
come to a realization that the material things are the ones that help us survive. What Kathleen
did in the conclusion was to light a spark in our hearts and that spark will motivate us to save
more lives, regardless of the occupation, wealth or race.
I.) The speech was very effective and relevant because the whole speech at its core, speaks
about nursing. From the beginning to the end of the speech, I felt reinvigorated and blazing
with passion for my course. It gave me a sense of purpose to continue studying nursing because
she gave me a view what it is like being a nurse on one day. Even if she was completely honest
and told the negative parts of the job, I was still convinced that I am going to be happy. It made
me realize that the most important thing on giving a speech is not only delivering it but also to
deliver it with a purpose. By doing this we can achieve what Kathleen did at the TED talk, and
that is to inspire.
