Comprehension Passages

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that
follow:
Many millions of people in Delhi reside in shanty-towns and informal
dwellings often with garbage bag plastic roofs and walls. Others live in the
equivalent of tents, or worse. However, they are not so unlucky as the large
number of people who live in the streets. There are many reasons for this
malaise. After the partition of India there has been large scale illegal
migration from Pakistan and Bangladesh and most of these migrants have
settled in the slums of Delhi. One such settlement area in Delhi is
Seemapuri. There are many lakhs of such people living in very poor
conditions here. Many of them are ragpickers and they find the slums of
Delhi a far better place than their own villages in Bangladesh due to extreme
poverty there. There were also migrations from Punjab and Kashmir during
80's and 90's due to the political upheaval the states had undergone.
Secondly, the impoverishment of rural peasantry forces people to move out
of villages to seek some subsistence living in the towns and cities. Poverty
and unemployment are the other prominent reasons for migration to the city
slums. But due to illiteracy the migrants are not able to get good jobs in the
city and remain poor. Exploitation under the feudalistic society of the rural
India is another reason why people are forced to leave their land of birth.
Due to the lack of development of infrastructure in the villages there are no
employments and it widens the gap between the rural and urban India.

Delhi is ever expanding and one of the serious problems Delhi encounter is
lack of quality education to the young population of Delhi. For such a
largely populated metropolitan city like Delhi there are just about 100
quality schools, most of them are public schools run by private
management. Though the government had allotted land to these
educational institutions at a very cheap rate with the promise that
25% of admissions should be reserved to the poor, not many of the
managements fulfil that promise. The fees of these schools are exorbitant
that poor people can never get an opportunity to study in these institutions.
The government run MCD schools are in such a pathetic condition that they
cannot cater to the educational needs of the millions in the emerging world
class city, Delhi.
Exploitation is always the fall out of illiteracy and poverty. Poor people
often fall prey to exploitation. Even though the government is spending
crores of rupees to alleviate poverty in Delhi it doesn't often reach the poor
and the needy. Not even one-fourth of the total amount spent by the
government reach them. Politicians and middlemen siphon off the fund
meant for the poor. It is a national shame that many lakhs of children i.n
Delhi are victims of child labour. They work as domestic labourers or they
work in various factories across the city. Children cleaning floors and tables
in shanty restaurants, weaving saris and carpets, packing and
hauling loads in factories are a general sight in Delhi.

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that
follow:
1. Life on our planet earth began with the sea; it is the birth place of life
on the earth. The earth is the only planet of our solar system so far
known which contains plenty of water and this water has made our
earth colourful, pulsating with life of a vast variety.

2. At present sea occupies about 70 per cent of the earth's surface. In the
southern hemisphere it occupies more area than that in the northern.
About 97% of the total water on the surface of the earth is found in the
seas and the remaining three per cent, which is generally fresh in lakes,
rivers, ponds etc.

3. Sea has given food and shelter to countless creatures. It is a potential


source of protein. In 1900 the world was only 150 crore, now it is more
than 560 crore and is increasing at a very fast rate. As a result, there is a
terrible hunger in many parts of the world. In Africa, Asia and
South America, millions of people do not get enough to eat. Many die
of malnutrition. Sea, if used scientifically and judiciously can meet most
of our demands.

4. Plankton or algae mostly constitutes the plant life. Like plant plankton
there are also animal plankton; the smallest living creature in the sea.
These animal plankton feed on plant plankton and small fish. Thus,
there is an unbroken chain of life in the sea.

5. Arctic and Antarctic seas abound in plankton and algae and so in fish
also. Blue whales, the largest living creatures of the world, are also
found here in great number.

6. Some countries have developed sea farming to a great extent. The


Japanese and the Hawaiians relish eating sea plants but it is not so in
other countries though some use them to feed their cattle or as, manure
in their fields. The fact is that sea plants contain rich nutrients not
found in other vegetarian food. It is good that even in our country
some scientists have developed some recipes for curries, jams etc. to be
made from algae.

7. But we must remember one thing that sea is not to be exploited


immediately. For example, man in his greed has hunted whales and some
other sea creatures so recklessly that some of their species have either
become extinct or are on the verge of extinction. Now, nations
of the world have realised their folly and have taken some joint decisions.
For example, one such decision is that the size of the holes in fishing nets
should be big enough to let baby escape through. Otherwise, killing oflarge
quantities of very young fish would have an adverse effect on the fish
population. In the same way another decision is for the protection of the
blue whales.
