A Hypothetical Problematic Situation

Filipino is one of the subjects taught in Grade 9 under the K-12 curriculum.

Although the said subject is taught using the native language of the country still

many of the learners find it difficult to understand as well as in answering HOTS

item-questions.

In Balanacan National High School (BNHS), some learners performed

considerably below average in Filipino subject. Most of the students can’t give an

answer even in a native language. They can’t comprehend, there is no retention in

the past lesson. The teacher do all possible strategies and approaches to understand

the lesson by the students but instill after lesson there is no retention in the past

lesson. Some will be chosen, for the 40 students only 10 of them can answer or can

recall what was studied from the past lesson.

Due to my realization some instances why the student’s acts like this, first

100% of them are users of gadgets, they give their fully attention browsing their

gadgets, such as cellphones, tablets etc. they spent their vacant time instead of

reading or reviewing their lessons to gaming online, browsing their facebook

account, instagram, tweeter. I used to collect the cellphones before they enter the

class and give it back to them upon their going home. But their parents tell that

when their children arrived from school they just throw theirs bags at the corner

then still facing their cellphones till midnight. No time for studying.
Second, because Balanacan and Guisian, is located coastal which most of the

source of their income was only fishing, and some students are joining their

parents to go fishing at night. The tendency was when the students come to school

they are lack of sleep, and make sleep in the class. That’s why some of the students

joining fishing with their parents didn’t understand the lesson, how much the

teacher makes effort for them.

Third, another source of living here in Balanacan was stevador (the one who

carries the heavy luggage of the passenger form the pier.) I have three students

that used to be stevadore when the ship came. This happens at night or they call the

passenger to their respective rides. It makes them not to study their lesson at night

but to make money.

Lastly, because their on the puberty stage, they are tend to have crushes and

easily to commit in a relationship. They are very busy communicating, posting

about their “hugot” in their love life.

And through this realization this instances maybe the source that’s why the

student can study their lesson because they have other activities aside from

studying because of their ways of life.

Those problems makes the students didn’t focus on their studies that’s why

even in Filipino the students cannot answer higher order thinking skills. They can’t
conclude any simple realization in the topic. Even construct straight answer in

Filipino.

As a teacher I used to advise them to study every night or even in their

vacant period in the school. I made a group chat and make the group chat for the

information I want them to study. I used to send picture of the lesson, the pages of

the book to study. But all of this effort was useless. The students is still

unknowledgeable.

When the assessment came the results of the examination is very poor.

1. What is the discrepancy between what is and what should be?


Ans: The teacher do all the strategies, approach and all possible
way for the students to learn and have them to understand the
lesson but still some of the student is always (sleeping) day
dreaming.
2. Derive a question about why the discrepancy exists
Why do some of students have no retention from the past lesson,
despite that the teacher do all the strategies and approach to
understand the lesson even in Filipino subjects?
3. Answer the question with three or more ‘plausible answers
Maybe their source of living is one the hindrance to them to
study.
Maybe their parents doesn’t have time to guide them at home.
Maybe they exert effort browsing and posting in social media
using gadgets.
Maybe there is no proper guidance and good connection between
parents that’s the students longing the affection with others, and
they commit early relationships.

4. Translate the ‘plausible answers’ into preliminary


research titles.
