Invitation

The 8th International Symposium on the Contributions of Psychology to Peace

VENUE: Quality Hotel Selma Lagerlöf, Sunne, Sweden

DATE: June 23-29, 2003
THEME: Children and Peace

You are cordially invited to participate in the 8th Symposium on the Contributions of Psychology
to Peace during June 23 - 29, 2003. Your name is included in an invitation list of around 40
participants proposed by the International Committee for the Psychological Study of Peace.

International Symposia on the Contributions of Psychology to Peace bring together about 40

invited participants from around the world every other year. The Eighth biennial meeting will be
held in Sweden and is conducted under the auspices of the Committee for the Psychological Study
of Peace, of the International Union of Psychological Science.

The symposia enable scholars to present their current research in peace psychology; offer a
platform for mutual exchange of ideas and experiences; engage in intercultural dialogue aimed at
reducing culture bias and ethnocentrism in research and practice in peace psychology; bring
forward voices from cultures and situations that are typically not included in peace discourses; and,
build an international community that promotes peace-related research and action.

The Committee for the Psychological Study of Peace, currently chaired by Diane Bretherton
(Australia), consists of Ruben Ardila (Colombia); Andrew Dawes (South Africa); Janel Gauthier
(Canada); Solveig Hagglund (Sweden); Takehito Ito (Japan); Ann Sanson (Australia); and Michael
Wessells, Previous Chair (U.S.). Morton Deutsch (U.S.), Toshio Iritani (Japan) and Klaus Boehnke
(Germany) are the Senior Advisers for the Committee.

Hoping to see you in Sunne, Sweden in June 2003,

best wishes

Solveig Hägglund
professor, chair of the symposium

LOCATION, FACILITIES AND COST

The symposium, including key notes addresses and paper presentations, will be held at Quality
Hotel Selma Lagerlöf. Accommodation is pre-booked at this hotel which is located in a small
village, Sunne, far from stores and restaurants but close to forests and lakes. The distance from
Stockholm is 370 kilometers west, from Göteborg 280 kilometers northwest, from Oslo 200
kilometers northeast, and from Malmö 600 kilometers north. Karlstad, the nearest larger city with
the university and the airport, is located 60 kilometers from the conference site. The area is well
known for outdoor tourism such as camping and fishing and also for its cultural traditions. Several
of Sweden’s famous authors were born in the area and there are many interesting gardens,
handicraft centres and traditional homes to visit. For more information about tourism in the area,
please use the web address http://www.varmland.org/

In June, the climate in this part of Sweden is around +15 - +20 degrees C, some rain may occur.
The symposium will take place in the mid-summer period, which means daylight almost 24 hours.

Funding possibilities

The symposium organizers are keenly aware of the financial limitations of some of our outstanding
scholars around the world, which does not make it always possible for them to participate. The
symposium organizers are working hard on raising money for this event and hopefully we are able
to completely or partly support about five participants to attend the symposium. If you need
