Learning Plan in COMPUTER 7

LESSON 1
PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS
LESSON OUTCOMES
After discussing the subject matter, the learners are expected to be able to:
1. Use the productivity tools discussed.
2. Select the appropriate productivity tool for a given task.
3. Identify and utilize the different elements of the graphical user interface (GUI)
of an office suite like Microsoft® Office.
4. Use proper keyboarding techniques when using the computer.

1. LECTURE
A. Enduring Understanding
 What is office productivity suite?
 How do productivity suites affect the way we work?

B. Content Standards
 Demonstrate an understanding of the nature and concepts of
the different Office Productivity tools, Proper Keyboarding, and
MS Word Graphical User Interface.

C. Topic Outline
 Using the Keyboard
 Office Productivity Tools
 The Microsoft Office GUI
 Common Skills

D. Performance Standards
 Identify and use various productivity tools.
 Select an appropriate productivity tool for a given task.
 Identify and use the different elements of the graphical user interface (GUI) of
Microsoft® Office.
 Use proper keyboarding techniques when using the computer.

E. Intended Lesson Outcome

Familiarize with the different Office productivity tools, the different
components of the MS Word GUI, the keyboard layout, and develop his/her
typing skills.

F. Teaching Techniques
The suggested teaching technique for this lesson is through lecture and demonstration
with individual and group activities.
G. Methodology
1. Motivation
Ask the class what are the features of their dream cell phones. Write
these on the board. Their answers should have a list similar to the one
below:
• Send and receive SMS and calls
• Send and receive video calls
• Take pictures
• Play games
• Listen to music
• Store files
• Surf the Internet
Add more to the list if necessary. State that there was a time when all
these cannot be found on a single machine and that each feature is
found on a separate machine. Nowadays, technological developments
have given birth to a single machine that does all the tasks of several
machines. Isn’t that a better way to live?
Ask them other things that do multiple tasks which used to be done by
individual machines. Write their answers on the board. It should be
similar to the list below:
• Swiss Army Knife
• Personal Computer
• Can Opener (the one with the bottle opener, corkscrew, and
nutcracker)
State that nowadays, machines tend to be multifunctional and software
is no exception. Software with many functions include the office
productivity suite.

2. Lesson Proper

Discuss the lesson on office productivity. Write on the board the

following office suite applications:
• Word processor
• Spreadsheet program
• Presentation program
Discuss the office suite and refer to the table on office suite
components as each component is being discussed. Turn on the
computers before discussing the word processor. Discuss keyboards
and typewriting techniques. Show to the class the QWERTY keyboard
and use it as a reference when discussing keys.

2. APPLICATION
A. Engagement Activity

Divide the class into six groups. Distribute the cardboard keyboards. Give
the class 10 minutes to fill the keyboard keys with symbols according to
the QWERTY keyboard.
Note: The teacher must prepare a cardboard keyboard for the learners’
activity.
B. Reinforcement Activity
Typing is one of the most basic skills in using a computer. Being good at this also
contributes to a person’s productivity with the computer as computing involves a
lot of input using the keyboard.

In this activity, the learners will be doing some typing drills. There are two sets of
exercises. A first set is a group of words that belongs to the list of the most
common misspelled words in the English language. It would not only develop
their skills in typing, it would also challenge their proficiency in spelling.
The second set is a list of sentences that would put their keyboarding techniques
to the test.

Instructions:
1. Open the word processor to start the exercise.
2. Type each word in the first set five times.
3. Type each sentence in the second set five times.
4. Save the document in the folder specified by the teacher.

Answer:
Ideally, this exercise should take them about 20-30 minutes to finish. However,
some learners without prior keyboarding skills may take longer. The teacher
should emphasize this point as the lesson is concluded. Remind the student
that practice, combined with the proper technique, makes perfect.

3. EVALUATION
Give a short quiz. Choose, at most, two of the following items:
• Enumerate the common components of an office suite such as the word
processor, spreadsheet program, and presentation program.
• State the advantages of packaged office software as opposed to individual
office programs.
• Enumerate at least three keyboard types depending on their key placement.

4. SYNTHESIS

1. Ask the learners how long it took them to finish the exercise. Which parts
2. of the exercise did they find difficult? Easy? Were they using proper typing
techniques?

5. ASSIGNMENT

Enumerate at least six shortcut keys for word processin
