WORKING WITH IMAGES

The suggested teaching technique for this lesson is through lecture and demonstration
with written and hands-on activities.

G. Methodology
1. Checking of Assignment
 Depending on the class size, you may want to group the learners for a
discussion on what a good topic would be for a website. Give them a few
minutes to discuss among themselves what they plan to put there and
why.

2. Motivation

Ask the learners to examine the visual quality of the pictures they’ve
chosen. Let them comment on aspects like color, clarity, detail, and
composition. The teacher can then challenge the learners to think of
ways to make their photos more interesting. Introduce the lesson at this
point, emphasizing that, through modern technology, it is now possible
to manipulate images fast using graphics software.

3. Lesson Proper

Begin with a thorough discussion of the different graphic file formats

followed by a briefing on graphics programs like Microsoft® Paint.
Demonstrate how to use the scanner (if available) and how to do basic
manipulation and editing techniques on the acquired images. The
learners are then asked to experiment manipulating and editing photos
in their laboratory exercise.

2. APPLICATION
A. Engagement Activity

Ask a student to save a file in three different formats while others

observe.
B. Reinforcement Activity

In desktop publishing, the learners will be importing and exporting images of

different file formats. The quality of graphics – pictures, edited images, clip arts,
etc. – matters in all kinds of publications, not only in DTP. So, for starters, let
them experiment a bit with the image manipulation program for creating and
editing images, and displaying and editing photographs.

Instructions:
Manipulate an image based on the sample and specifications given.

5. Stretch the image to 200%, both horizontally and vertically.
6. Customize a color (light purple) for the border. The border is actually
composed of several rounded rectangles.
7. Use the eraser to remove the colors outside of the border.
8. Use the airbrush to create thought bubbles.
9. Insert text with transparent background inside the biggest thought bubble.
10. Create a band of thick lines (light orange) below the image.
11. Draw a dog paw made up of ellipses, curved lines, and brush strokes.
12. Select the dog paw, then copy and paste it several times along the band.
You may resize the paws right after pasting to make them fit the band, or just
draw light orange lines again over the uneven edges created by pasting.
13. Fill the insides of the original paw if they are colored white.
14. Using the magnifier, check the spaces in the newly created elements
whether they have the right colors or were affected by subsequent edits.
