I.Contemplate and think about how gender is portrayed in your community. List down as many
words or phrases used to identify and describe the following genders. (10 PTS)

their clothes, even in choosing

plastic flower as a design n your

see lesbians usually playing musical

even at an early age. They
also have interest in

I know few women that are into
sports. They usually prefer
gymnastics, badminton and
table tennis as their sport. Not
as tough and physical as
basketball.
When I can see gays and lesbian at
my young age or younger than me,
gays are usually engage in street

rope and even in hula-hoop while
lesbians are those I see riding

depends on how they want to dress
and carry their selves.

What are your thoughts?

Even you are a man a woman or even a homosexual, we have your own ways on how to
convey our thoughts and on how to express ourselves in the society that we belong. Even
before we were born there were already standards that was set that mostly believes we need
to abide with. Yes, most of the men and women still express their selves with the characteristics
and personality that was expected by the society. That men are masculine in taught and in
actions also with the women who needs to be feminine . as the years passed by, the society
becomes more open to the homosexual individuals. They can work , they can show themselves
outside, they are part of the society now. Regardless of our gender identity, we are free to
express ourselves to the society. We are free to show our talents, actions and ourselves
confidently. It was already inculcated in our minds that we are living for ourselves not for the
people around who judges and discriminate.

II. Introspect and answer the following questions with your own words. (10 PTS)

1. How can you describe your discovery of your sexuality?

Since I was a child, I was surrounded with family relatives and friends that mostly are men and
women. So as I grow up there were no questions that popped up on my mind about my
sexuality, there were no confusions when I can see and meet individuals that are homosexuals,
there was no problem at all. Because from the start I know who I am , what I am and where I
will be. That is being a woman, I was the “Barbie” of the family, my mom, my aunts, my
grandmothers always dressed me up with blouses and dresses. As I explore the world, as I meet
people and as I experience factors that may change my perspective in myself , my sexuality
never change and still the same. And I loved it, I like being a girl. Wearing girly clothes, hair pins
and ribbons, make ups and all. I love the idea of wedding, having my own family and giving
birth. I am a female and forever I will be.

2. How does your being a female or male influence your family’s and peers’ expectations
from you?

Being the eldest and at the same time a female, has always been a challenge. Their dreams are
higher and also with the expectations. With the set standards for every female, they always

pushes me to be more, to prove that I can be more. With relatives, friends and peers whom I
can get strength.

As a female, my parents have always been conservative, since they were reared in a traditional
way. They always remind me to be prim and proper at all times, how I should sit and talk it
should be a lady like. I can say that , if there are expectations that my parents set for me are, to
be confident always since when I was a child I was always regarded as the shy one. so as I grow
up they expect me to overcome my shyness towards socializing, talking in the class or in front
of others and conversing to others, another is to finish my degree and achieve my dreams as a
Teacher. Since I was an honor student since kindergarten, that has always been an another
expectation that my parents and friends do have for me. So as much as I can , I study and study
harder.

III. Think about the phrases babae kasi, men are men, pakipot, bakla ka lang.

How these words communicate patriarchy? (10 PTS)

That babae kasi statement gives limit to what girls can actually do for instances girls are viewed
that they cannot be immerse in rough sports like basketball or even in professions aligned in
PNP, BFP or Military “babae kasi”, maybe they cannot endure the physical pain that they might
experience in trainings, that only men can endure. Those fields are for men, it is more fit for
them than girls because they are girls. Sometimes it can also express boundaries’, like when it
comes to politics, candidates are often men because men are considered as the head of the
family who manages the family decision making and so that means they can also lead certain
places or even the country. Women seems to have boundaries’ in the field of politics babae
kasi, if a man announces his intentions regarding politics the reaction of the people is just
normal like “uhm okay”, “ah that’s already expected”while when woman express her intentions
in politics most people questions it babae kasi . Women are viewed to be a home maker or to
have only light works, to the point that politics seems to be too high to aspire for women.

“men are men” this phrase is what I often hear when there is infidelity that happened in a
certain relationship married or not. Sometimes I wonder if the word “infidelity” are just for
men. Not to romanticized an infidelity but when a man commits infidelity that phrase usually
comes after, it seems that the phrase is the saving glory of every man. Since the society already
know the capacity of every man in committing infidelity, it became normal, typical problem but
already expected since men are men. it is not a big issue anymore but when a woman
committed it , for sure it will be a huge problem or issue, there is no phrase like men are men
will come along the way. See the difference, men can commit infidelity in just one snap and the
phrase men are men always come along the way, while when woman commits it they have a
high price to pay.

“pakipot, bakla ka lang” the phrase is really showing the men do have a belief that “girls and
even gays owe them a lot”. They believe that gays need them, that they can have them
instantly. Personally I consider that statement as an eye opener because it seems like a gay
owes a lot to the man, because the man had an interest to the gay. So the man would feel like
he can get the gay hustle free, so when a gay refuses or disagree to the man pakipot, bakla ka
lang phrase occurs. I have friends who are gays and they often have boy friends but sometimes
that often leads them to stress and pain ,” what’s the catch, I am already interested on you, so
why like that”, “why don’t you just agree, why do you still refuse” often statements that I hear
and witness. This just proves that men are really dominant, that they should get what they
want.

Crying is sometimes viewed as a sign of
weakness. So when a boy was born and

cry”. That will be the driving force of every
boy to be tough and strong at all times. And
since we are used to view boys as the
stronger sex that means they should be
braver and firmer at all times. Crying was
sometimes prohibited for them , for some
instances, when adversities come in a
family , all the family members seek comfort
and strength to the head of the family and
that is usually men. So they should not be
seen crying , boys cannot have any sign of
weakness in front of his loved ones because
his family may also feel weak sand sad. Boys
were reared to be their family’s protector so
when hard times may come he will be the
source of light of his family.
Just like what we always say “we are just
humans” we can feel pain, sadness,
disappointments or even happiness that can
often lead us to cry and this instances doesn’t
excuse boys. They can cry as long as they
wanted to. Sometimes there are those
women who view a man who cries a genuine
and a true individual. The fact that they have
a belief that boys should not cry that means
they just cry when they cannot take it
anymore, and they cry when something
happened a good one or a bad one, and the
truth is seeing a boy cry with your own eyes
just proves that , that boy is genuine to what
he is feeling towards something or someone.
He is true to his self and to you as he doesn’t
need to deny or hide what is he truly feels
towards a thing or a person.

Girls are bad Some believes that driving is for boys, that is
drivers while why most of the drivers we have are boys.
boys are From tricycles to a personal drivers they are
superb usually boys. So we are used to this, seeing
drivers boys as a driver is just usual while when we
encounter a girl who drives is unusual.
Almost all boys were expected to learn how
to drive. With the belief that girls are just for
houses, so they should not be outside , boys
should just do the driving. But in our world
today there are girls who learns how to drive
on her own and to become dependent on
herself in terms of driving and that is not bad.
It’s just that we are more relax and confident
to travel when we have a boy driver rather
than a girl driver. I also observed that in a
driving school most learners are girls, while
most of the boys learned how to drive with
the help of their father or others, they can
learn how to drive even without the help of a
driving school.
Women As a woman, growing up was not easy I
should be needed to listen to my parents especially my
prim and mother’s advices. Like, I should sit properly at
proper. It is all times, always be careful in my actions,
okay for men always choose to behave, sit and walk
to be rowdy, straight and properly. I should not wear short
they are men skirts and shorts when I go out, I should not
anyway. wear sleeveless outside. Even in talking I
should not shout when I talk. I don’t
understand all of these until I grew up and
had my transition from childhood to
adolescence and now to young adult. Since
women were always viewed as a prim and
proper like what women were before the old
times, they are sacred like no one can touch a
For me being a competent and a superb
driver doesn’t come with your sex. Why
should I believe in that statement that “boys
are superb drivers” when every time I hear a
road accidents, car crash accidents it was
always boys who were involved. Boys usually
are reckless drivers resulting to an accident.
We cannot get rid of this situations,
sometimes boys also wants to race in the
middle of a busy high ways. While girls are
very careful to drive, with the personality
that every girl posses; we value our lives, we
value life since a life starts and blooms with
us, we give life. Since being a girl also means
being delicate, prim for sure in driving we can
apply those. We may drive slowly but it is
sure that we will not commit accidents as
many accidents that boys were involved.
Many girls now a day are paving in the field
of driving. There are numerous driving
schools where every girl driver aspirant can
learn well.
Everyone is free to express themselves on
the way they are comfortable with. This can
be called sometimes going out on our
comfort zones, or going out on our shells.
And doing this is not totally bad, as long as
you are happy and it is where you are
comfortable with to express your thoughts
and feelings then it is just okay.
Breaking what was set rules or expectations
that girls should be prim and proper to be
carefree is not against the law, it is
someone’s life so he or she has the right to
choose what would he or she acts as long as
she doesn’t hurt anyone or make the lives of
individuals surrounds him or her in harm.

really value being prim and proper cause that
is what every woman should be like act
according to what the society expects. While
men are the total opposite of every woman,
they can go out top less and even in their
boxers, it is okay for them to shout when
talking and to sit according to where they are
comfortable with. Seems like there are no
standards, there are no set expectations that
men should also be prim and proper. It is just
normal for us to see them in streets drinking
alcohol and smoking. Not to prejudice but I
observed that in crimes men were usually
involved, they are the suspects some times
and most of the victims were women. And
the usual crime is harassment or rape so
women were really expected to act properly
at all times.
And boys being rowdy is their choice. It is in
their own hands to create personality that
they would show to the people around them.
The actions that they do, how they talk, or sit
depends on them. If they wanted to build a
personality that would bring a negative
perception of them from others then it is
their choice, they have every control in
committing it or not anyway.
Above all being way different from the
stereotypes is not bad at all. So Don’t be
apologetic or feel guilty by just being true to
yourself.
