TEACHER’S LEARNING PLAN IN GRADE 11 PHYSICAL SCIENCE

Activity No. 1
Activity Title: Early Atomic Theory
Learning Target/s: At the end of the lesson, the students CAN:
1. describe the ideas of the Ancient Greeks on the atom
1.1 determine the different Ancient Greeks Philosophers and their ideas on the
development of the atomic theory.
2. describe the contributions of the alchemists to the science of chemistry
1.1 explain the idea of changing one substance into another initiated by alchemy.

I. Essential Ideas

Ancient Greeks

 Thales of Miletus – thought of water as the ultimate substance that constituted matter because he
believed that water could change into any kind of matter.
 Empedocles of Agrigentum – considered air, water, earth, and fire as the four essential elements that
could possibly be the source of everything – all kind of matter.
 Aristotle – rejected the idea of atomism and assumed that only those observable things could be proven
to be true.
 Leucippus and Democritus – introduced the first atomic theory. Democritus maintained the smallest
piece of matter and called this indivisible smallest possible piece of matter an atom. Atomos, which
means indivisible or cannot be divided.

The Alchemists

People who practice alchemy were called alchemist. They had shown how certain types of chemicals react
when combined with other substances. Thus, alchemist improved the understanding of basic chemistry.

II. Learning Experiences

A. Clarifying Understanding
Directions: Choose the letter of the correct answer.

1. He explained that everything came from water.

a. Aristotle b. Empedocles c. Leucippus d. Thales
2. Who is considered as the Father of Greek Atomism?
a. Democritus b. Aristotle c. Leucippus d. Epicurus
3. It is the indivisible smallest piece of matter which could not be further divided.
a. Atom b. Water c. Matter d. Particle
4. He did not believe in the idea of atom since atoms are not visible to the naked eye.
a. Empedocles b. Thales c. Aristotle d. Democritus
5. The scholars that were skillful with metals, creating cheap imitations of gold and silver.
a. Philosophers b. Alchemists c. Atomists d. Noble man
B. Processing Questions

1. What are the early historical periods that led to the development of the atomic theory?
2. How is alchemy related to chemistry?
3. Explain how the ancient Greek Philosophers explained the questions about the composition of matter.
What method did they used?

C. Lifelong Learning
Directions: Choose one of the following to reflect on.

1. People from the past were very curious about many things, they have strived hard to gather
information that are very useful in today’s time. Galatians 6:9 said that “Let us not become
weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up”. What
were your struggles in the past that paved a way for you to be successful in your endeavors
today? What gave you the motivation not to give up?

2. Ancient Greek philosophers suffered great losses before they have reached their success. If you
lived by their time, would you invest your efforts in searching for something that you know
might actually fail? How will you motivate yourself to continue to strive hard?

D. Framing Concepts
Directions: Complete the diagram below. Using your knowledge on Ancient Greeks and Alchemy,
write a sentence that starts with the given letter in the word ATOMS or a sentence that consists the
letters in the word ATOMS. The sentence should describe the significant ideas of the Ancient
Greeks and Alchemists about atoms or important ideas that led to its discovery.
