DESIGN VISION - BEING WITH WATER

DRAFT CONCEPT DESIGN
The City of Greater Bendigo is preparing to
redevelop the former Bendigo Municipal Baths
(the Baths) site within Rosalind Park, for the use
and enjoyment of the community and visitors
alike. This draft concept design transforms the
Baths from their current neglected state to a
high quality public parkland centred around the
waterbody.
Historically, the Baths (constructed in 1912-13)
was a bathing facility where the community
swam in the open water. Change rooms,
training infrastructure, a grandstand, a polo
area and diving platforms and a pontoon were
built alongside the dam for swimmer’s comfort
and convenience. There was also a paddling
reserve for small children that the Curator
of Rosalind Park remarked were ‘one of
the best features of the new baths, and one
likely to provide enjoyment for old and young’
(Bendigo Advertiser 09.01.1913). The Baths
was Bendigo’s primary swimming facility prior
to the construction of new swimming pool, on
the western part of the site (now Faith Leech
Aquatic Centre) in the 1950’s.
This design for the Baths’ redevelopment
strives to strengthen the community’s
collective memory of the Baths and celebrate
the experience of ‘people coming together
around water’ and being ‘Immersed in the
water’s landscape’.
The design includes a reinterpretation of the old
Baths’ structures in the north east corner of the
waterbody and seeks to represent the spirit of
the Baths’ by including a small water play area
- the ‘Paddling Paddock’ as a gesture to former
paddling reserve for young children, and to
provide people with the opportunity to interact
with water again. The design also includes
improvements to the quality and presentation of
the water, including adding riparian vegetation, to
create a rich natural environment. Construction
of a boardwalk, circulation paths, shelters
and picnicking facilities will provide abundant
opportunity for community enjoyment.
