DIRECTION
 Direction is defined as the path that something takes,
the path that must be taken to reach a specific place, the
way in which something is starting to develop or the way
you are facing.
IMPORTANCE OF DIRECTION
 Direction is an important function of management that
gives the orders and motivates the personnel for change.
Helps in stability and growth: direction is an integrated
activity of motivation, leadership and communication.
These activities help in stability of the organization
NATURE OF DIRECTION
 Directing is said to be a process in which the managers
instruct, guide and oversee the performance of the
workers to achieve predetermined goals. Directing is said
to be the heart of management process. Planning,
organizing, staffing have got no importance
if direction function does not take place.

 Direction helps in achieving coordination among various


operations of the enterprise. It is only after the
performance of direction function that the purpose of
planning, organizing and staffing is achieved.
FEATURES OF DIRECTING IN MANAGEMENT
 Direction implies issuing orders and instruction. ... The
top management gives broad direction to the middle
level managers who in turn give specific direction to
the lower level management. The four important aspects
of directing are supervision, motivation, leadership and
communication
ELEMENTS OF DIRECTION
 These are planning, organizing, directing, and
controlling. Directing is an essential function in any
enterprise. In fact, directing helps managers ensure
quality performance and achieve the organization's
goals.

 There are four primary elements of directing –

 Supervising,
 Motivating,
 Leadership, and
 Communication.
