Syllabus for MI 2 – Contemporary Issue in Missions


First Semester, August 25- December – 11, 2020

Course Description:
This course endeavors to prepare the students in exploring the current development of
missiology throughout various issues in the missions. At the end of this course, the student will
acknowledge the issues that may culminate them to edify and reflect their understanding of their
practical missions.

Goal/Objects:

The goal of this course is to introduce students to contemporary issues in missions that
will assist them to identify their cultural contextual needs and solutions by the study of:
1. Review of major issues in contemporary missions.
2. Resources for contemporary issues in missions.
3. Contemporary theological issues in missions
4. New trends in contemporary missions
5. Cultural and anthropological issues in missions
6. Practical issues in contemporary missions
7. Contemporary challenges in missions
8. False gospel and doctrinal issues contemporary missions
9. Complexity of various authority, relationship, and political issues in the missions that
confronted by the missionary

Requirements:

1. Interaction Papers: Every student will write a one-page (single-spaced, 1-inch margins, 12
font, Times New Roman) paper for each week and submit on or before Sunday 11:59 PM. The
student will choose the articles on contemporary issues in mission written at least 2010 onwards
from online Evangelical Mission Quarterly, Mission Frontiers, Journal of Evangelism & Mission
(JEM), and EMQ in PBTS Library. Interaction paper will be consisted of a succinct summary
maximum of five sentences, personal insight students have gained from the article, and
application to their lives and ministries. Students must include sources: for example, [EMQ -
April-June 2018, Vol. 54, Issue 2, title, and author’s name].

2. Research Paper (RP):

a) Each student will research contemporary issues in a mission that is presently being
encountered in the practical mission. Students are allowed to explore differently sources

for contemporary issues utilizing the tools of missiological inquiry. They must present
their personal evaluation and application including suggestions of that issue. In order for
missiological research, they may draw the sources from:

 Contemporary issues on mission from Evangelical Mission Quarterly (EMQ)
 Contemporary issues from Mission Frontiers
 Online sources for contemporary issues (present issues in the world mission, such
as refugees, terrorism, and false teaching in mission).

b) The RP pattern is to be observed:


a. Introduction
b. Body – containing description and analysis of the issue. Personal evaluation and
suggestion.
c. Conclusion – containing the application to your life and ministry.
This will be a four page RP 1.15 spaced using Times New Roman 12, following the
form and style of Turabian 9th. Direct quotations (“…”) should be noted by quotation
marks with footnote references.
c) Each student will present his or her research in the class session. They will prepare a
maximum of 15 PPT and the presentation will not go beyond 30 minutes. The assigned
reporter will post PPT and RP two days prior to his or her presentation in “MI 2 Class” in
online submission, and a hard copy (for the seminary classroom students) to the teacher’s
ABGTS box on or before 5:00 PM.
d) The reporter will bring at least 3 (three) questions for the class discussion after his or her
presentation.

3. Reflection Paper: The non-reporting students are to submit a half-page summary and
reflection of what transpired in the session. This includes the RP reporter’s presentation and class
discussion. The deadline for submission is every Friday before 11.59 pm.

4. Video Analysis: Each student will write a one-page typed single-spaced, Time New Romans
12 font paper on their response to the video presentation. Students will analyze the video
scholarly and reflect the response for the future mission in the student’s missiological context.
The response will cover the last part of the paper where the student will analyze the strength and
weaknesses. Due date: On next session day before 5:00 pm.

Participation: All students are expected to participate in the class forum discussion. At the end
of the semester, the teacher will evaluate students’ participation and regular attendance in the
forum which will be awarded a maximum of 10 points. All the participants will meet in the
forum through our online cloud meeting [ https://meet.jit.si/MI2-Contemporary Issues in Mission] in
time mentioned above in this syllabus.
Note: For late submission of any paper will be considered 1 (one) grade down.

5. Quiz: Five (5) online quiz are required for the semester on the previous activities and
discussions. For the classroom students, must take same quiz in the seminary classroom.

6. Midterm Exam: Each student will create a four to five (4-5) minute documentary video/film
in a particular contemporary issue. Students may collect the information and video clip/ pictures
from internet source. Student will give the narration with the pictures or short video about the
issue as a document reporter. Background music, animations are design appreciated but no
cartoons film allowed. The students will post their documentary video on “MI2-Contemporary
Issues in Missions” in Facebook group on the midterm day before 5:00 PM.

7. Grading:
